But a sizeable minority have got it in their heads that they can split lanes, make illegal turns and run red lights simply because their carbon footprint is but a trace of what that SUV they just cut off leaves behind
I hope he's being deliberately inflammatory. No douchebag, we split lanes, run reds, and make illegal turns because we can, and because it sure sucks getting back up to speed if you don't have an engine to do it for you.

He is being delibrately inflamatory, he's a professional schmuck. I saw one clip once where Schram had gone on a rant against breastfeeding in public (comparing it to urinating in public) and when it cut back to the anchors, Kathi Goertzen called him an idiot live on the air. I would have preferred stronger language, but given how reserved they're supposed to be, I'll take it.

Last night I blew through a red on Alaskan just north of the bridge and there was a cop car behind me that I didn't see. He pulled up to me about a half mile down the road and very nicely said "You have to stop for red lights too, ok". I nodded and waved at him and he waved at me and drove off. I was surprised he wasn't at least a little irate.
If you get a ticket on a bicycle, does it affect your driving record?

Ken Shram is a *local* *broadcast* *commentator*.
Derrick Ito, Shane Lees, and Wetigers are each as effective at shaping public opinion as this blowhard. Pay no attention.

oh...i didn't get that memo
maybe i should apologize?
*edit*
there, west coast passive aggressive apology added for you and Ben. see disclaimer below \/ \/ \/
Nah... I should have read the article! I joined your guy's forum when I wanted to make some suggestions for the next Stone Way Ride, and I'm afraid I did rather stick my foot in my mouth here.
I wasn't referring to you whining, but the earlier post:
Quote:
Wtf!
If law enforcement paid that kind of attention to protecting cyclists from douchebags in cars ...
When I said that about whining. A great deal of people in cars are douchebags, very true, but that doesn't give anyone, driving a car, riding a bike, or on a riding mower, a reason to be douchebag back. And honestly I'd say there's a great many douchebags on bikes too that endanger others needlessly. There's also a great many douchebag joggers, dog walkers, old people out for a stroll, families with 8 children, as anyone who rides the BGT knows.
Be considerate but aggressive by default, but be demeaning and an asshole when the situation warrants it. That's my general rule for riding. Of course some people think every situation warrants it, but that's their business.
And nope, haven't ridden with you guys... yet. I've been thinking about it, if I haven't pissed off everyone here already.
Regarding the article, which I have now read... late: not the area of the trail I frequent but that does sound messed up. If there's going to be a group ride to blow through that area at over the speed limit, I would be happy to participate.
COME RIDE WITH US!!!
and when ya get passed by the asshole on a trike you get one free shot at the head (courtesy of my assholedness)

Well, that depends. Last week as I was pleading my case, the magistrate explained to me that it would effect my driving record because the police officer check the "traffic infraction" box on the top of the ticket.
The magistrate was kind enough to have reduced the fine from $128 to $40 and remove the traffic citation, however, it is clear that cyclist can be given a citation that will effect their insurance rate.
Be careful out there... he city traffic poh-lice and the insurance corporations that control them are out there to raise their revenues.
If you do go to the magistrate, it behooves you to say something like what i said "I have no problem paying a fine to he city of seattle, but I do not feel it is appropriate that my cycling behavior should effect the non-cyclists that share my insurance policy with me."
but yes... to my surprise it can.

see, now if the LFP po-po acted like that they might get more R-E-S-P-E-C-T from the trail users...insted of hiding and ambushing folks in a piss poor attempt to solidify their weakasssed case about us reckless and suicidal bikers.

How have I not seen you all these years? I can't recall a single trike on the trail and that's my commute as well. I look like Jamie.
yeah, cause we all commute at the same time.
DUR!!!
my ride in is mostly LCW to the BGT @ LFP at random times eairly in the am, home its all BGT at random times, but mostly after 8pm. I usually don't see many folks on my commute (thank GAWD!) because of my schedule.
...and theres not many trikers in the area, which 'splains the lack-o-trikeyness. i've met only 3 different riders and 3 different handtrikers, this summer only.
