Got a flat. Having nothing to remove a 1cm metal bur from my tire, I very badly needed pliers. /* Teeth make shitty pliers. */ My swiss army knife came to the rescue, with its shitty little pliers that barely did the job.

I'm adding needle nose pliers to the list of shit I carry.

these pliers are four hundred dollars.
these pliers are four hundred fucking dollars.
lets get 'em.

I got mine for free. Found it in the gutter commuting to ABR on Harbor Island.

Free! FTW!

Harbor Freight FTW!
The nearest office is Everett or Bellevue, but they sell good (enough) cheap tools. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/retail_stores.taf#WA

Yay Global trade!

I used to carry a hemostat for that sort of thing.

These days, I just ride heavier tires. If something is big enough to puncture my tire, I can usually pull it out with my fingers (think 1.5-2" industrial nail).

you did it with your swiss army knife pliers, so I say keep using them.

the swiss army pliers are a really good deal for that sorta thing. I use them for a pot holder when camping, and all sorts of shit you wouldn't think they can do... I've pulled nails with them... popped boils with them... they are the mini wonder plier... hell you could probably make Rob Halford sing in an even higher note with them...

and the best part is you don't have to worry about breaking them, as if they break... a free replacement is waiting for you at REI

Seriously... I think you are hard pressed to beat them as far as strength to weight... I've broken 4-5 leatherman charges and waves and i have never broken a swiss army mini plier...

Hell, why stop there, I should start carrying some kind of small med kit, if not just a bandaid (that would keep my bike cleaner). Surgical scissors are the shit, btw. They can make art out of coinage! I dunno' about hemostats, not as toothy as a good pair of not-for-sewing-ppl-up pliers.

once again to address your concerns, it is not uncommon for swiss army knives to be used for microsurgery. between the scissors, pliers, smallknife, pin and leather awl you can robably tak out your own appendix if you had to. i think it has been done before. And then you just use the duct tape that you have wrapped around your seat tube to close the wounds. I pulled several 2" sea urchin spines out of my foot when I was in the gulf.

swiss army knife + duct tape + 4 oz. flask of everclear + dilaudid = .83 MASH unit

Hmmm, I should start carrying around some painkillers with me. I have some left over from my face plant earlier this summer.

First aid kits are always a good idea, you never know when someone will need a bandaid or athletic tape or neosporin or advil... or whatever else i have in my bag of wonders. i'm a bit anal about never leaving the house without it, especially if i'm on my bike.

It seems I am a bottle of Everclear away from being a MASH unit.
