thanks to everyone on .83 for not being complete douchebags and blaming the victim or making jokes... rape is never funny.

Just because we don't make tasteless jokes/accusations about rape doesn't mean we aren't douchebags.

For example, Derrick.

funny, i was thinking the same thing...

True, U-Locks are inherently also fistpacks, or a mace when swung from a chain. Take that roll-o-quarters or sock-o-soap.

Is it no longer ok to make "suprise sex" jokes around here then? If that's true you'll want to contact your small group representative and have them bring it up in the next Gender Issues Subcommittee meeting so you can push to get it included in the TOS for 2008.

Yeah, but any old U-lock isn't going to do much to a potential attacker. That's why ya gotta splurge for the $85 Kryptonite New York lock. 4 lbs of pure steel fury! plus $3000 in bike protection, in the extremely unlikely event that someone manages to cut through it.

Unlikely... yep.

From this thread: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=319779&highlight=ulock

I got myself an Evolution Mini. Small, lighter than the NYC lock, and still with $2K in protection (I paid up for the 3 years of insurance). And I sure wouldn't want to get hit in the face with it!

If you intend to use a blunt instrument for self defence, you should carefully think through exactly how you would do so.
Normally peaceful people tend to be tentative when they're forced to hit someone.
Grasp the U-lock firmly, strike with absolutely all the force you can muster, keep hitting until the attacker falls down or runs away.

This from joby, who's avatar would suggest experience with blunt instrument use. I've only actually seen him once, but he was carrying two huge bottles of costco vodka that I wouldn't want to mess with. Wielding them like Musashi, and striking with deadly-potent martinis.

Damn. That was one determined thief. Hope whoever owned that bike had registered it with Kryptonite!

I also insure myself against bike theft by parking near nicer-looking, less well-locked bikes. It's worked so far...
