this just in:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/327282_sharrows10.html

3 good points made in this article (good being subjective)

*"...a sharrow, and it's not a license to drive in the middle of the street, run down cyclists who aren't riding over the marks...a friendly reminder from the Seattle Department of Transportation to drivers: Leave room for those who choose to pedal their way around town...doesn't alter the rules of the road..."
AKA; nothings changed 'cept for some paint!

*"When city officials decided to install bike lanes on the northern part of Stone Way North but opted for sharrows on the southern part, bike activists organized a protest rally-ride through that neighborhood...the decision to delay installing sharrows on California Avenue Southwest had activists once again questioning the city's dedication to the Bicycle Master Plan...and some wonder if they're more than just goodwill gestures to cyclists. After all, critics say, what does it really change?"
AKA; master plan, schaster plan...we do what we want (from the city)

*"One other recommendation...was for an educational campaign about the purpose of sharrows, since only two out of seven motorists interpreted the markings to mean they should give cyclists more room...SDOT workers are trying to communicate information about sharrows to those who live along streets earmarked for application, but there's not a campaign aimed at the general public yet."
AKA; the rules havent changed, folks still think bikes dont belong on the streets and no amount of paint is going to change this until the citizens are educated by the city.

Creating a plan (that they dont stick with?) is nice and the paint is pretty and all, but a follow through education programme is a requirement else the entire thing is a failure. Folks STILL dont understand that bikes are allowed to ride on the street...even though they do, reluctantly. The marks mean squat if no one knows exactly what it means and or doesnt mean; primary pathway for bikes, but not the only allowed route.

I wonder what the city is waiting for, a death in a sharrow and the claim of "i didnt know what that meant" before they do a broad education campaign?

like the old adage; The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Do drivers even see those things? Personally, I don't stare at the right shoulder just in front of me when driving.

I can't wait for all the flame bait on craigslist: "Damn bikers should get off the road and stick to streets that have sharrows on them."
