anyhow, my partial ride report:
joeball, mikeod, and myself met up with btah and sketchy and waited in traffic for a few hours before getting to verlot. from there we headed up the road as it got darker and darker. eventually tball and ltabg (laura the angry ben's girlfriend) passed us driving to hike in. when we finally reached the trailhead with the last dwindling twilight, it was evident that they'd headed in on the closed road. so we had to follow them, since they didn't have anything for gear.
then, in the dark, ben almost died on potholes and we had to do the worst detour ever with 70lb+ touring bikes and the trailer. up up up the slippery dirt path in the dark, down down down the other side. there is not really any describing how tired and pissed off we were, until we hit the river and lo, it was ro on the other side telling us that he had:
a) the best campsite ever
b) the girls
c) a warm fire going
that was all it took to get sketchy to charge across the water, as did everyone else. they regretted it later when they had wet shoes for the rest of the weekend.
still, we met up and, other than mikeod almost passing out, we got set up and were happy.
the next day we woke fairly early, rode up to monte cristo and hiked up the steep-ass trail to poodle pass and silver lake. after ditching ben and sketchy and an hour getting eaten by bugs at silver lake we came back down and found derrick in our camp. and that's when things went downhill?

I'd propose a late October date for that one to miss the crowds and to take advantage of crappy late season weather to better appreciate the hot springs.
However, IMO, this climb is much better in the late spring when it can be done as an easy (took my Mom up this climb several years ago) snow climb with spectacular views.
I'd love to hear suggestions for something else before the late summer window closes up in the end of September.

Hilarious! It's not too often that the funniest moments are captured on film.
Funny how much easier that detour was in daylight, and not under duress worrying if we'd find the girls.
That was indeed the best campsite ever, especially after Sketchy hauled a gigantic 12 foot beam to use as a campfire couch. Another few .83 camping trips and the rest of that bridge will be gone.
The ride out to Darrington was fun, though the low cloud cover shielded any views of the mountains. The damage is all limited to a 3 mile or so section of the road, starting a mile or 3 from Barlow pass. In short, there's no reason not to do the Mountain Loop Highway by bicycle, as long as you don't mind a few hike-a-bike scrambles. I didn't have to unload the bike, though there were a couple spots where I was tempted to.
There was one section with a lot of downed trees, not too hard to lift the bike over or roll it under. Plus 2 or 3 major washouts, which, though a little tricky in spots due to piles of loose sand/dirt/rock, were all passable by carefully pushing/dragging/lifting the bike. All were no longer than and less difficult than the bypass to the Monte Cristo campsite. The washouts were under construction, and there were signs instructing pedestrians/bicyclists to wait until construction personnel waved them through. On a Sunday though nobody was working. There's a gate on the Darrington side where you have to lift the bike over a big rock, similar to the gate at the Monte Cristo trail head.
There were people camping and fishing on both sides of the closed section, and there was a little traffic on the Darrington side heading to and from the campsites, but probably much much less than when the whole loop is open.
Lee, you have a couple cold ones coming your way as thanks for the portage - one for each cold foot.

I just about died laughing when she said the rock was by a big tree with no branches on the top, I assume she meant a snag. I told her there were only about a million of those trees up here...but no, no there is a big rock 12ft long and 4ft high next to it...I told here there was only about 2 million of those rocks up here.
