Probably some of you have seen Vancouver's B.C.Clettes; I guess you'd call them a bicycle dance/performance group, like Portland's Sprockettes. Anyway, I noticed they were going to be in town as part of a West Coast tour on 8/31, but that they didn't have a show set up, so I emailed them and got this response:
"Yes, there are girls interested in riding mass and doing some sort of spontaneous or planned show. if you are for thinking about helping, that's really great. we don't need much!
- time(ish) and location
- we have a system that's battery operated or plugged in (preferred, if that's an option to save batteries)
- flat surface, med sized space (3-6 parking spaces)
- pass our helmet around for donations?
- other peeps too (bands, bike games, etc)"
So, I'd like to help set this up, anybody else?

i was talking to them last month about possibly doing a show at the greenlake race. they trailed off on the conversation about it.

Seems like something like that would be just right; I wonder if we would want to propose it a bit earlier than midnight so more people would come? (And maybe fewer to the race if concerns about it getting too public are still lurking.)

They could do it right in front of the grandstands, giving it the added excitement of a possible surprise swim!
Speaking of Vancouver, I'm riding around its streets in the rain right now. Anyone have any Vancouver favorite spots? For food, beer, bike rides etc. Is there a .83-type group in Vancouver? I'm not seeing many bikes on the streets, but the weather is kinda crappy.

I've had some really good Greek food there. Off West Broadway there's supposed to quite a few good places.

There's quite a few active bikies up there. I'll PM you a friend's email, he probably can help you out.

I'm down in LA where I rode with the Midnite Ridazz last night (about 200 riders taking over the streets Critical Mass style); the ride ended with a show by the B.C.Clettes which, until the cops raided us with two cars and a helicopter! was pretty great. We should really do what we can to make their show after CM on friday happen. The more audience the merrier; if we can do it right at the end of CM so there are as many people as possible around, that would be great; maybe we could encourage the leaders of the CM ride to end up at a suitable location?

i.e. seed the front of the pack with riders who:
A. keep the pace manageably slow so the group doesn't fall apart
2. eventually get the group to a suitable destination for the performance
it could happen... but not spontaneously.

It doesn't seem like a bad idea to flyer the ride and let people know that there is going to be a performance at a suitable place at a suitable time ... Greenlake at 9:00? Something like that.

Last time Mass ended @ the SAM there seemed plenty to me to be of room for all sorts of activities (there was, after all, a portable soundsystem and accompanied dancing).
given the subject matter, wouldnt that be the more appropriate locale?

Sound system would be very cool. Miles?
Here's the latest message from the 'clettes.
Yo!!!!!!!
Our Velo:City West Coast tour is seriously rocking.
We met Dave (.83) last night at the Big Lebowski Ride in LA!!!!!!!! Awesome. He's getting the word out, yes?? He'll be back in SEA on Tuesday-
Unbelievable-
Ride rocked, show rocked, crowd freakin' LOVED us and screamed for more, even when the police showed up to put an early end to the performance and sent in a helicopter with searchlights!!!!! No joke, Duderino. That's the LA Police for you. Check out our blog, see the link on www.bcclettes.ca
We really want to show our rad stuff to our close neighbours in Seattle at the end of the tour. I promise you will FLIP your lids when you see us- we're hot, we rock, we want to spread the bike love, and we need a little help from rad friends like YOU to make the magic happen.
Call us on the cell # below, or send an email with updates.
We're looking for a venue and time for the show- probably right before or after either Critical Mass or Midnight Mass. Maybe you cats can help 'lead' the CM pack to an end destination (or mid-ride destination). ALSO GET THE WORD OUT TO THE BIKE COMMUNITY! posters/ flyers can be downloaded from our website. post it on local webpages and email lists too-------
Cheers,
get back word to us---
Lori K for the 'Clettes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:) :) :) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So what you're saying is that you need a trusty domestique or two to ride off the front, right?
Or is that too squidly?
Anyways, question: the mass on Friday doesn't affect the Thursday group ride? I'm guessing the answer is no, and this week is an opportunity for double the van-dammage.

It might affect the Thursday ride group in an anticipatory, "let's RIDE SOME MOTHERFUCKING BIKES" sort of way, but by no means in a "gosh guys mass is tomorrow we'd better rest up" sort of way.

mix cmass and the lovely ladies of the grand great north at gasworks!
-gasworks provides power in the covered picnic area
-great view for outta towners
-fairly removed from the general public, minimizing harassment
-relatively flat zone as far as the city goes
-pubs near and on the way to the greenlake race
also, it may encourage the crew from cyclecide to join the ride- they will be arriving by thurs nite to be setting up seven (7) pedal powered rides at bumbershat sat,sun,mon....
I post this here because I know you pointythreeers can make it happen!

I think Gasworks sounds like a good idea; it also might be easier to "lead" CM there than Volunteer Park.

It seems to end up at Gasworks almost 50% of the time anyway.

So, I just talked to Lori of the b.c.clettes and she and her troupe were down with the idea of Gasworks as a spot to perform. They think the best time for them would be right at the end of Mass when there are the most people still around or even during Mass if it goes by Gasworks.
The one thing she wanted to know for sure is if Gasworks has power outlets; it does, doesn't it?

i'd have a hard time believing they have publicly accessible power outlets.

I do have the wireless music trailer, remember. That might not be good enough though.

unless someone else volunteers to do so, i'll go take a ride thru and see if there is anything available.
I'll even check with the concession stand by the public poophouse to see if we can plug in there.

i looked everywhere and could not find anything.
the concession stand goon looked at me like i was insane (er than usual) for asking if we could tap their power.
if they NEED power, GWP is SOL.

So is this for certain happening at gasworks? Or is it not happening at all due to lack of power?

Power at Gasworks last I used (some years ago)it was at the covered 'picnic area' at the base of one of the large posts...
just down the steps from the concession stand/bathrooms-
Besides Joe's party, anyone want to catch dinner after the show and before the midnight race? .83 used to often take over a bar. Suggestions?

They rocked - a little pre-show at Westlake (two, three dances - one to J.T. "SexyBack", actually ;D ) and then a show at Seattle Center after we all rode a bunch of Cyclocide rides. They invited us to ... their Dead Baby equivalent in Vancouver ... the weekend of September 21/24th. Let's road trip, but not for the whole weekend ... of course!! Sticky?!?!?
AND btw, ro is organizing a .83 trip to the Big Lebowski ride in L.A. for 2008. :)

The Seattle Center is a trap. Mass kept rolling and hit volunteer park by way of the market to jackson to 12th.

Yeah, I don't really get the point of trying to get us all to stop in Seattle Center, that was kind of dumb, but the rest of the ride was awesome. Volunteer was a great place to end it, I had a great time just hanging out, drinking and playing foot down.

Foot Down the way you Fast Friday kids play it is awesome! I really like the shrinking circle of bikes part. So much fun! I tried to make someone put a foot down by pressing on their rear tire with my front. Then my bars turned and my wheel stayed straight. Fun!

It's almost as much fun as baseball bat foot down where you can only hit people in the head with the baseball bat, but it's otherwise just like a regular foot down, except with head trauma.
I do not subscribe to the "rubbin' is racing" school of foot down, so I'm just a huge bummer.
