We all know how Trev counts(fingers,toes, other things). Count me in, I've been on every camp trip this season, can't miss this one. Since I'm a little slower uphill I may start earlier so I don't hold anybody back, meet at the tunnel or something.

That brings up a good point. For those of you who haven't ridden the Iron Horse yet, keep a steady, sustainable pace. It's a shallow grade and so it's very tempting to gun it and plan on catching your breath on the next flat spot. This is a mistake because until the tunnel, there are no flat spots. Seriously, maybe 1-2% of the trail going up to the tunnel is not a steady uphill incline. It constantly looks like the trail is about to flatten out 200 feet ahead. This is a vicious lie. Do not believe it.

Also, if you see pink on the trail, brace yourself. Whoever maintains the trail, in their infinite wisdom (I imagine it was probably hikers or horse riders that resent bikers) put down DEEP pink, chunky gravel in a few spots. (usually right before and after the bridge crossings) The first time I rode the trail, I nearly took a header off a ~100 foot drop off one of the rail trestles (before the railings went up) when I hit that shit. It's mellowed out over time but keep your eyes peeled, they occasionally throw down fresh pink in spots.

Oh yeah, and how about this for a fun activity on the way up?

We ride right through a great rock climbing area at exit 38. I can haul rope, harnesses and quickdraws with us on the way up (my camping equipment will have to car up in that case) and we can stop off and do some easy rock climbing for a couple hours.

Matter of taste, I guess, I'm not a big crack or slab climbing fan so I like the big chunky granite climbs up in the pass there. Exit 38 has some really good 5.6 and 5.7 beginners routes as well.

I've got a little radio I'm happy to bring along. I don't know if we'll pick up the station out that far (in my car, you can get stations until lake Katchees(sp) so this should be feasible.

1) Borrow, borrow, borrow. However, I have nothing to lend as I have been borrowing the last several trips. :)

2) Or be like me and buy a rack from REI and then return it after the trip.

Lee's homemade buckets are a cheap way to go. As for racks, I picked one up new at Recycled Cycles for cheap. It's not a fancy tubus, but it does the job just fine. They might even have some used...

i really do need to make another set and video/picturify it. it's actually quite easy and they're cheap, rugged, and waterproof. plus once you hit the campsite, you've got a stool.
