There's two things we should consider about the length.

One, we should get as early a start as possible. This will be more enjoyable if we aren't looking over our shoulders at the clock. 10AM is way too late, IMO. I'd recommend we be on the trail riding no later than 8.

Let's assume 3 hours from Rattlesnake to the tunnel, being conservative and counting on a sustained 8MPH. An hour at the tunnel and lunch puts us at noon at Hyak. Assuming 12 MPH average over the remaining 50 miles gets us to Rosyln at about 4PM. I'm assuming those speed averages include rest breaks and the gravel, etc.

We should try and get as much heavy gear into the car as possible - weight is going to have an exponential effect here, we're going uphill and the weight makes you sink deeper into the gravel. If we can get people just carrying water and travel food, that would be ideal.

We should have a contingency plan in case of mechanicals or someone pooping out. There's several takeouts that have I-90 access that we can use to get cars to them. Trev, what's the possibility of an early car rendezvous in case of such a situation?

Also, my parents will be up there and they are offering to drop off firewood for us if we give them the campsite we're staying at.

Lastly, I added up the car numbers and it's looking good. We need one more decent sized car. If either Sketch or someone else (Henry?) has wheels, we're good to go.

My origional plan was to leave @ 6am. Truly. But after consideration that the bus arrives later than that i pushed it out to 10. I think 8 is as good a time as any for the exact reasons you list. the more time we have, the easier we can take it, and or account for mechanicals.

I figured the same. 12pm we meet at hyak, eat, shit, drink and get going to Cle Elum Safeway by 3. mill around there for 30 minutes or so, get food and do the last push to to the river. we meet at the camp by 5. once were off the trail it should be pretty easy. Wind may be a real issue, and its worth considering...but i base that on nothing i've experienced.

thats why i'm offering my wifes isuzu to hual shit in, but understand she wont be at camp till 6 or 7 (and i'd lean to towards the latter side of that). I do have a bob that i am bringing.

did you read the disclaimer?

wood = ahhhhh, warmth! the more the betterest! i've got a fucktonne of scrap lumber and cedar shingles in my front yard from building a roof last month. I plan on taking that wood up the pass with me friday and put it in a tent to save our spot.

i'm being tempted by the dark side to suggest we leave from a different spot further up the pass. but the force is strooooong with this one and i'd like to wrap the bike-camping season with a decent trip.

my only real concern is that the weather turning into complete shit. the freezing level is log and they got snow on stevens pass today (last night?) i think.

All things being equal, I'd rather lose miles off the backside of the ride than on the climb. The best scenery is going up the pass.

We're almost to where we need to be with cars. With Henry out, we're 2 bike/person spots short right now. One more car will do it. (alternately if we lose a couple more people, we'll be good.

So, 70 miles riding in the rain huh? I'm not looking forward to this trip that much. I'll see how the car/gear situation plays out, but right now I'm 60% going and 40% bailing out.

The 3-day forecast is pretty unreliable. I've looked at about 5 forecasts and seen everything from cloudy to snow in the prediction. Starting late tomorrow, I'd start giving the forecasts some credence.

Regardless, the nights will be cold. I can stir up a couple extra sleeping bags and Thermarests for those of you who are not cold weather camping equiped. I'll go ahead and pick up the 4-man tent while I'm at it. The tent is definitely a car item, it weighs about 15 pounds.

As for food, I'll put down for dinner if I can get another person or two to assist.

PS: with Sketchy, we are good for transport. We'll probably have room to spare, even.

Cliff Mass (UW Atmospheric Sciences professor) usually gives a weekend forecast on the 2nd hour of Friday's Weekday program on KUOW (around 10:50 am) that is detailed and eerily accurate. Listen for that. Don't trust 3-day forecasts much, and don't just read the forecast, because they have to cover all their bases (as per the 'thunderstorms' predictions here today and yesterday).

u da maaaaan

Ben;
how the heck did you come up with a +5k foot elev gain? did you forget the tunnel. i'm seeing about half that based on the g-maps.

I think there might be some granularity problems in the topo plot Ben's got. Seeing as how the pass is only 3022 feet high and I know for a fact that the uphill side is a nice smooth uphill climb, not the seismograph plot in that map, I think the 5000 foot prediction is way off. A conservative estimate from looking at Ben's elevation plot, the total is closer to 2500 feet of gain.

Trev, my biggest concern right now is that there's a significant chance of a decent snowfall over the next couple nights. If that hasn't completely melted off, the section from the tunnel to Cle Elum is gonna suck.

How's this for a Plan B if there's a lot of snow at the top of the pass:
Drive to Rattlesnake, ride up to the tunnel, dork around there for a bit, ride back to Rattlesnake and wussmobile it to Roslyn. I'm hoping we can do the whole thing but if the snow level drops under 2500 feet, this might be our best option.

jezus...people are dropping like flys!

when i go up friday, im gonna look for a spot closer to ronald and suggest we skip Cle Elum all together and not cook dinner up there, but stop in town. give folks a chance to rest before the final leg.

but i need to check the road the crosses 90 before Cle elum.

I will do my best, since I'm similarly interested in knowing for the yarn ride. KUOW is also very good about keeping mp3s of their programs around. The 10-11am show should be available at 11:05 and for a week after; you just have to skip past all the blather from Knute Berger and the like on the week's news (that's what the 10am Friday show always is).

thanks Greg, i appreciate the info and help.

see edit on first post.

I'm considering pulling back on the distance and quelling this at Easton State Park now that we've narrowed the group down, but i'd like some feedback from who ever is still down for this.

I'll go thru there tomorrow to see how the town looks.

Truth be told, I'd rather do Plan B, drive up to Salmon Le Sac, set up camp and ride into Roslyn/Cle Elum to booze it up in the bars. We'd still get 35 + 15 miles in and the camping up at Salmon Le Sac is far superior to Easton. I've camped at Easton before and frankly, it bites.

Let's not panic here. I've done the entire uphill section up to the tunnel and back later in the year than this, in rain the whole way and it was still one of the better rides I've done. This ride is beautiful and fun, regardless of the weather, unless it's a hard, driving rain or something. If the weather is bad or people are getting tired or those skinny road tires aren't handling the gravel well, we can always fall back on Plan B and head back to Rattlesnake. Once there, we can decide to head back to town or to roll on up to Salmon Le Sac, set up camp and then do a nice leisurely ride into Roslyn to booze it up in the bars, go back and set up a nice big roaring campfire.

C'mon folks, everyone here is all talking tough about commuting and Tues/Thurs rides in the rain, don't let a 50% rain forecast on a 35 mile ride (if we go to plan B) turn you into a big pile of wusses.

[edit] Hell, if we do Plan B, we could easily be back in town in time for the Yarn Ride if folks are so inclined.

Shit to bring:
Warm clothing: the temperature will be in the mid to low 40s with wind so dress appropriately. On the uphill side, the physical exertion will be enough to keep most riders pretty warm but the downhill can get cold really fast unless you're dressed for it. Decent gloves are a must.

Waterproof jacket: There's a chance of rain, it doesn't look like it will be hard rain at this time, but a waterproof shell is good to have.

Lots of water: This isn't a little squeeze bottle in your waterbottle carrier sort of ride. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water with you. A CamelBak or similar hydration system is worth its weight in gold. *Highly recommended*, in at least one water bottle, mix up some gatorade or something similar - the sugar will do wonders for your long-term endurance. Note: mix up the gatorade (I have a bunch of powder I'll bring to the trailhead) a bit weak so that you don't accidentally dehydrate yourself with the sugar.

Sugary snacks for the way up: You'll be burning calories like crazy going up this thing, keep fueled! I've alway had best luck with a nice hearty breakfast at least an hour before start time (no hitting the McD 10 minutes before ride start) and then sticking with sugary stuff on the ride itself. Gu, Powergel and the like work well but some cheap dehydrated pineapple rings from Trader Joes seem to work just about as well in my experience at a fraction of the cost.

Spare tube: I once hit an old railroad vintage nail that totally tore my tube open beyond any hope of patching on this trail. Luckily, I was less than a mile from the car when it happened. BRING A SPARE TUBE. You don't want to have to walk 10 miles to the road. I'll be bringing a basic repair kit along but it's up to all you dorks to make sure that you have the necessary replacement parts and doodads for your own bike.

Warm sleeping gear: It will be close to or slightly below freezing at the campsite. Make sure you have a decent sleeping bag. The $10 GI Joe's waffle bag will certainly keep you from turning into an icecube overnight but won't keep you very comfortable. I'll be packing 2 extra sleeping bags and sleeping pads with me for those of you who are camping gear deficient.

being the considerate type (scoff), i figured id toss the idea out on the table. not because like I like the idea, i just wanted to make the option available.

i'm gonna do this. I've wanted to do the JWT/tunnel/IHT for a long time now, and even tho the northwest isnt totally cooperating weather wise, i don't think this is "fucking impossible". hard, sure...but not impossible. It's not killer steep, just sustained climbing for the first 1/3rd of the route, the rest is flat. And consider the ease of the ride home, even if it does rain. Sounds like we'll have more wood than we can burn in a night, so keeping warm shouldnt be an issue too much either. Hell, it's not like were in the north cascades and cant burn anything!

Dress warm, carb load now and bring plenty to eat as we go. Cold weather riding requires more burnable calories than summer riding which needs more hydration. this is, after all, a final wave off to summer and i'm sure ma nature has painted the pass in her best colors.

come on kids...this will be fun!

Rain or shine, I'll still be there. Snowing at night? Yeah, you'll still see me. However, I'm a little leery of the entire 60 (70?) mile original plan, but if we have support vehicles, that does make it a lot easier. So, plan ahead, but for sure plan on having me around.

PS. Who's chauffeuring me up to the start?

We ride in 48! (+/- a few)

Trev:
I wouldn't even qualify this as "hard". I rode the JWT to the tunnel about 2 months after I started biking again about 10 years ago on a ill-fitting, shittacular old Schwin with a Biopace crankset and skinny 26 inch tires. If I could do it then, as out of shape as I was at the time, anyone in this club could do it, no problem.

I'll put myself as volunteering to lead anyone that gets to the tunnel and decided they can't do the 30 mile straightaway back to Rattlesnake and provide up to two of them a boost out to Roslyn where we can get nice and plastered waiting for everyone to get caught up. I've never ridden the tunnel to Cle Elum stretch and was curious about it but I can always do this ride again next spring and do the whole shebang then.

Let's play this one by ear. Folks may do better or worse than they expect and so we should just have an easier opt-out available and be willing to split the group in 2 if necessary. Cell service is available but somewhat spotty up there. I'm bringing 2 of those Motorola talkabout radios that have a range of about 3 miles. I'll give my second one to Trev if he doesn't have one and we can use it to coordinate the group, especially if we get strung out on the trail.

PS: I still have one spot open in my car up for grabs!

The weather is tipping my attitude in favor of going riding. This morning weather.com predicted thunderstorms and I have yet to see a drop of rain this whole afternoon (that is actually from looking at webcams since I've been in a basement computer lab almost all this afternoon). So the weathermen are pretty terrible with their crystal balls.

It also looks like my secondary concern of getting my homework done will not be a problem. I've got 1.5/3 assignments due on Monday finished already.

As for the car situation, who has room? If possible I'd like to bring up a mountain bike and stuff all my overnight gear in someone's car so I won't have back pain after the ride.

Current attitude: 75% going camping, 25% missing out on camping fun

Fuck it. Rain or shine, I'm in.
Foo, I'll probably be down to take your tent. Mines little, covered in playa from burning man and far from water proof.
Plan B just may be the way to go if we really want to enjoy ourselves. And I'm up for really making this enjoyable.
Either way, let's rock this!

Actually, according to the highly regimented rules of this organization, I found discovered that I am forbidden from going on camping trips.

OK, I've still got 1 spot free in my car, Kalen, you want it?

Also Fiery and whomever else is in my car, what's the plan on leaving Saturday morning? I want to be in the car and driving no later than 7:15 AM. Can you get to my place with gear by then or do I need to come by and pick you up? IF so, I need good directions (I don't feel like routefinding that early in the morning), a phone number I can call in case of FUBAR, etc. Please get back to me earlier than later. I've got *plans* tonight and might not be around much this evening to see any messages on the boards. The best bet is to just call me 206-353-7765. (but do it before 7 or so, aforementioned *plans* means I am not going to be answering my phone after that unless someone's on fire or decapitated.)

Trev, long story short, I didn't get to my parents' house last night until long after they were asleep so I don't have the 4-man tent or the spare sleeping bag & pad. My parental units are going to bring them out to Cle Elum with them, they might need directions to go out there to drop said items off. Once you've got a campsite, could you post a detailed description of the location? My parent's property is off the cell grid so communication with them can be tricky - a definite location the day before would help tremendously.

At the moment I'm planning on driving out there with you guys and riding up to the the tunnel, at which point i'll turn around and go back to my car and then my home.

Is there a Westside meetup or just meet at Rattlesnake Lake?

i'll post a updated gmap with our starting and stopping points, and list those out as well for verbal directions. i'm on my way to do a few things and hit the highway.

Check back this afternoon, say 5ish, for final details.

Ben suggested we start further up the mountain at the garcia crossing from 90. it's exit 38. i'm gonna try to find this and include it into the route. this would cut off a few miles and save some trip time, which would be good for those unforeseen mechanicals, slow-pokes, long breaks, ect.

nobodies claimed the bob trailer, so thats still available if wanted. I'm not going to need it for obvious reasons.

Henry...glad your coming, even if only for the first leg.

Yeah, I'll take that. Where are you located for packing up and going? I'm in Wallingford, so if you're too far afield, I might ask for a pickup.

If you want to just call and get the planning over, I'm at two-53.35-niner.fourtysix-thirtysix.

Here's hoping it doesn't piss on us all weekend.

I've never heard of this Garcia crossing but the exit 38 access is just to park at the trailhead right after the exit and head up the steep trail going up the hill from the back end of the parking lot (IIRC) and it dumps out right on the Iron Horse by some portapotties.

This is probably empty alarmism but my general feel is that the probability of a car break-in at the Exit 38 trailhead is probably higher than Rattlesnake, just FYI. Exit 38, especially at this time of year, is largely deserted and is a small lot - a few isolated cars are a break-in magnet.

As far as the trail, the stretch from Rattlesnake to 38 is fairly nondescript so we won't miss much in the way of cool stuff if we do this start.

38 is usually where I started this trail.

foo, check it out.

i have a really good idea where this is. I raised the break-in question with ben and he said that he trusts leaving vehicles there.

my only other concern about leaving from this spot is the folks that may be coming via bus or biking up to north bend, as that would take them longer to meet us.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that, it's an access point for the crazy downhiller's. That works, you miss the rock climbing area and the first bridge, but it's not like we're lacking for bridge crossings on this ride. Yeah, I haven't been to that trailhead but my understanding is that it's better than the rock climbing trailhead.

Kalen:
I'm in Phinney Ridge, 49th and Greenwood, 4817 Greenwood Ave N, I'll call you today.
