This Sunday is a transit photoshoot downtown. Meet us at 11:00 in Westlake Center to help us make the case for the re-instating the planned bike lane on Stone Way N.
Who: You! With your bike and a shirt you don't mind having a sign taped/stapled/pinned to. If you can't print out a sign beforehand, we'll have one for you.
When: 11am on Sunday, August 26th.
Where: Westlake Center, in downtown Seattle
Why: The City of Seattle has planned a photo op with Mayor Nickels & County Executive Ron Sims to demonstrate walking, cycling, and taking the bus as 'robust alternatives' to driving. Unfortunately, the City of Seattle has not followed through with its Complete Streets measure on Stone Way N in Fremont, California Ave in West Seattle, and is rumoured to also be reneging on planned improvements to Fauntleroy.
How: We will be there with signs to remind the Mayor to give us the Complete Streets he promised us, and we will come in such numbers that we can not be ignored.
Here's the original press release:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Transportation Photo Shoot on Sunday, August 26
Join International Sustainable Solutions in partnership with regional agencies such as SDOT, King County Metro and Sound Transit for a series of photos showing the benefits of moving people on foot, bicycles, buses, or light rail, rather than in their cars.
It's a great opportunity to help create compelling images for a transportation alternatives message! The City of Seattle is closing 2nd Avenue near Cherry for this photo shoot. Mayor Nickels and County Executive Sims are both expected to participate. OnRequest Images is providing pro bono professional photographic support. The photos will be used in a Commuter Toolkit, a series of materials highlighting the importance of developing robust alternatives to people driving alone in their cars, and illustrating some of the key transportation initiatives now under way.
Planned photos include:
1) 177 cars (based on our current average of 1.15 people per car)
2) 200 people standing without a vehicle, showing how much space is wasted when people drive alone in cars
3) Three simulated buses with volunteers boarding (an average bus carries about 60+ riders)
4) 200 riders in the simulated space of one Link light rail train
5) 200 bicyclists
Folks with bikes should show up at noon at 2nd and Marion. It should only take about 30 minutes.
Upcoming Events:
[October 3rd] Taking Letters (bike parts?) to the Mayor
Halloween hand-outs

terrific. I'll be camping on an island just to avoid you, and drinking a cold beer for breakfast with some kelp for good measure.

"No, they're not protesters," said the photoshoot release waver worker while radioing in about the large group of cyclists that had just arrived.
If you missed it, we kept our signs hidden until we were actually lined up in formation and they were taking pictures. During the shoot a guy talked to Derrick and I about taking the signs off because they were "unreadable anyway" and they'll just have to photoshop them out later.
No one was kicked out. Beers & food & fun were had at Elysian Fields afterwards.

Indeed, it was very non confrontational. The lunch afterwards was quite good, though. Nothing beats giving the finger to the duck tours.

well... yes... I can think of at least one thing... when I lived in fremont we built a blind-shack at 35th and phinney and went duck hunting with supersoakers.
I still am hoping to organize a DuckHunt ralleycat.

me and andrew and eric and dan all went to greenlake afterwards, and then we went to gorditos (sans andrew) and stuffed ourselves full of giant burrito. yes, today was good. i evn had fun complaining about getting kicked out of the shot.
Thanks for rocking the bike, guys and gals. Good show, wish I could have been there, had to fix bikes instead.
You all are fully aware the the BMP is not binding, right?
And someone told me that this is the first place in the USA to do this sort of photo shoot, but Portland, Oregon did it a few years ago. Why do we think we are so different and special? Fuck it, let's just copy PDX and get on with it!
I say, let's spend every cent of money we can on fixing the pavement surface. Oh, and education for drivers on the rights of bikers.

Oh geez, a couple of my roommates were watching that, making fun of it. I tried, but even ironic derision of Miss Teen USA got to me after about 2 minutes and I had to leave. Evidently, there was a big projection screen behind the stage and as the winner was announced, they flashed a giant "OMG" up there.
Man....
PS: I'm a little concerned about your friend's promise/threat to post our philosophical discussion to the InterWeb.

First one I saw was done in the UK in the 80's. PDX are a bunch Johny-come-lately's in my book.

as i was chatting with/bitching at a seattle cop during the shoot, she asked about the signs...i 'splained why we are upset and used the Stone Way protest as a bridge to todays action. I asked her if she knew what a sharrow was...she had NO idea.
NICE JOB MR. NICKOLS....you fat choadmucher!

Ha! Great idea, Trevor. I'll have to ask the next Seattle authority figure I see the same question.

What exactly are we REALLY asking for here people. Do we want respect and acknoledgement. Obviously we want car drivers to SHARE THE ROAD. Will a Sharrow really do anything? Will a poster? Will a bike lane? I know I would settle for some fresh pavement and a little street sweeping.
Why in this country is getting a drivers license seen as a right when really it is a privilege? I think that adding bicycle related "share the road-bikes are OK" questions to the drivers test would be a really good start in getting drivers to be cool.
My new tact when someone honks and I meet them at the light is to just say, "Be nice!"

i don't know about the rest of ya but all im asking for is the drivers in this country to be more yielding to folks they could potentially harm.
Last time I took a drivers test I do believe there was a question about bikes and peds...but that was a few years back (and i'm gonna have to do it again...damn)
yeah..i'll wave SOMETHING at them...and it's part of my hand...
actually i think i'm gonna carry a bag of rocks for the next asshat that tests his horn in my ear.

My parents were on a camping trip several years ago and ended up talking to an old motorcyclist who carried a bunch of heavy ball bearings in his pocket. If cars started hassling him, he'd just grab a handful, huck 'em up in the air behind him and then take off.

i did a similar thing when I was a harley rider in my late teens/early twenties, cept i had electroplating copper ingots that I would carry in a pouch under my seat. Same deal, over the top agro drivers would get a few into their windshield.
effective but dangerous...i only needed to do that a few times ever.

Well I watched the photo shoot from the side lines because I didn't have a hellmutt on my ugly noggin(which is harder than most hellmutts anyway). I talked with a woman from Belgium who was also kicked out (no hellmutt) and of course Alison and a young mother with Baby stapped to her chest(mother had hellmutt not baby, I don't think they make one that baby size).
And then what about the Segways spaced amoungst the bikes? They weren't wearing helmets because they go on sidewalks?
The fun part is always riding and drinking anyway, but is was interesting listening to the comments by the organizers, complaining about pooh bear and family stealing their photo shoot, right...

My other fave was how they complained the protest signs would mess up the color balance of the shoot - of bikers in neon commuting gear.

I'm with Aaron on this one. Why can't we just teach every driver that EVERY road has an implicit "sharrow" on it, rather than paint a few roads with a goofy symbol. If even police officers don't know what they are, then thats a sign that we need some education first.
Perhaps drivers education should also include vehicular cycling. Sure, most people would probably think it was a waste of time for them, but if they had to sit through it in class at least they would know that bikes are even allowed on the road...

The city is putting lanes on 24th ave NW in ballard, according to a local informant.
They are also putting in an uphill "door zone" lane on western ave downtown, and some sharrows on the downhill/flat.
Now, if they would just fix the massive death potholes in the road, and put a fence up to keep the hobos and tourists out of the street, it might be an OK place to ride.
