Yarn, ho!
Here are the local yarn shops that should be open on Sunday, Oct. 7:
Renaissance, Kent (Sunday, 11am-4pm)
Bad Woman Yarn, Wallingford Center - also home to Trophy Cupcake (Sunday, 11am–5pm)
Weaving Works, U District (Sunday, 11am-3pm)
So Much Yarn, Belltown (Sunday, 11am-5pm)
Acorn Street, Ravenna (Sunday, 12-5pm)
Will Yarn II also be beer-centric in theme? hilltops/yarnshops/beerswithhops
hillsfewer/woolytour/brewery??

I am thinking meet at Bad Woman/Trophy, bike down to Renaissance and grab some lunch in Kent, return to So Much Yarn. It's not clear we'll make it back to So Much Yarn in time, particularly if it rains.
I was delaying the actual route planning until after the Fremont Ride. Are you still making a spoke card?

Those stops sounds good to me. And, yes, I'll work on a spokecard design.

I'm gonna call a 11am meetup at Trophy Cupcakes, which, along with Bad Woman Yarn is in Wallingford Center (the former wooden school building at Wallingford N and N 45th).
I plan on being at Trophy before 11. I'll try to get everyone rolling by 11:30 so we have a prayer of getting to Kent and back before 5pm. I plan on going over the Montlake Bridge and south via Lake Washington Blvd.; latecomers can try to meet up with us along the way.

Sunday is the Kitsap Colour Classic ride. That means my side of the sound is trading me for about 2000 spandex clad, <12 mph-carbon race bike-riding Cascaders from your side of the sound! What a good deal!
Any recommendations on getting to Wallingford from downtown?

Any chance your side can keep 'em?
The 2 routes are (in order of my personal preference, your mileage may vary):
1) Dexter, Fremont bridge, head East to Wallingford on the Burke.
2) Eastlake, University Bridge, head West on the Burke to Wallingford.

3) Myrtle Edwards, Railroad bike trail, Dravus, Nickerson, Stone Way or Wallingford.
4) 1st Ave, Westlake, Westlake, Fremont Bridge, Stone Way or Wallingford.
Euh, sure. But you've got to find me a job on your side. And unfortunately, my skillset doesn't have many clients.

Y'know, there was an old Whiskey class diesel sub for sale on Boats.com about 6 years ago. The ad said, "The uses are only limited by the buyer's imagination." The damn thing cost less than the house I'm living in right now. We even put in an application for the loan on it. We put down for intended application, "Piracy on the high seas". They never wrote back.
Now I'm double-bummed we didn't get it!

Bad Woman Yarn (Wallingford) -> Lake Washington Blvd -> Rainier -> Interurban Trail -> Renaissance (Kent) -> Green River Trail -> Airport Way -> ID -> 1st Ave -> So Much Yarn (Belltown). Note that there are some places where I'm unsure on the connections, but I'm confident I can improvise my way through it all.
Roughly 50 miles, which we might not make, particularly if the weather is bad. We have some options:
First, if the weather is horrendous, just eat cupcakes, go yarn shopping, and go home.
If the weather is kinda bad, we can just turn around where we pick up the Interurban Trail near 405.
If we get to Kent and want to zoom to Belltown, we can take the Interurban Trail back, as the Green River Trail adds a few miles due to the curves of the river.
Food/drink options: Wallingford: Trophy Cupcakes.
Kent: If it were just me, I'd go straight to Caveman Kitchen (807 W Valley Highway) and get some BBQ. Vegetarians and drinkers might want to go elsewhere, but I don't know much about the area. There is a sports bar called Poppa's Pub at 510 Washington Ave N (2 blocks S of Caveman Kitchen), as well as the Pied Piper Pub 2 blocks west of the yarn shop.
Belltown, of course, has lots of choices. If it's after 5pm when we roll into the ID, though, I'd say we should stop there and pick a good Chinese place for dinner. If the rain is bad or you've had enough, you can load your bikes onto a bus at the International District Station and ride home.

As much as I love yarn and cupcakes and bike rides (tons!), this thread is the pits.
So little enthusiasm is being shown that I'm making the tough call to not ride on Sunday. I'd love for there to be another yarn ride when there is more interest. Someone else want to do the spokecard?
Good luck!

People are dropping out of the camping trip like flies, and elsewhere we're warned of our imminent death if we hike the Enchantments, and this is the thread with not enough enthusiasm?

Dude, have you seen the camping trip thread lately? This thread is a 3 ring circus of enthusiasm by comparison.
Seriously though: I am excited. This is my first ride in three weeks without:
- insane back pain and a slipped L3/L4 disc
- the entire state of Georgia (except Shannon's friends and family) trying to run me over
- jet lag
- the common cold
- the cascade "young singles" (median age, 52) club trying to impede upon what little "game" I actually possess
- barriers, sand pits and three consecutive runups!
How could I NOT be excited?

Exactly, if I get back early enough, I'll join you guys. After riding the pass. And I don't even knit.

Feh, I'm organizing this thing, I don't knit, and my wife (who does knit) doesn't even have a working bike anymore.
[I'm sure that's just the kind of enthusiasm Lucia was looking for.]

raise of hands:
WHO is riding?
Alternate Idea:
Ride to Shorty's at 8pm and play pinball in the trophy room with me

And it was so much fun!
I also remember my rather drinky careening thru Fremont, hill-climbing back to the U-district, etc.
I am all for knitting at Shorty's, but I was still planning to do the yarn ride. Unless, of course, there are lots of no-shows, in which case I can go press cider in Columbia City.
Who's in for yarn-riding?!

I don't knit--but love any excuse to ride--thought I was unavailable for this ride, but now I that I *can* go, the yarn ride is falling apart???
I want to go, if it stays on. Someone can please maybe school me in very simple knitt-ery. or I can just be a knit supporter.

Shannon, whether you go on the ride or not, I'd be happy to do my best to school you in knittery.
That goes for any of you other wool-loving creatures out there.
I can also teach folks to dye, spin, and weave.
Why? Cos I make shit, that's why.

Uh, no. If anyone shows up and is willing, I'm riding.
Per my post in the camping thread though, come prepared for rain.

If you lot finish befor 18:00 and want some beer, swing by Dutch Bicycle Company in Ballard. I'll be there waiting to hand you all a beer. No coffee with whiskey in it though, because that would warm you up, and I hate you all.
I am committed to Sunday. Even if there is no yarn and even if the weather is crap.
Although, like a small kitten, I like yarn. Yarn is zen. I have no clue what to do with it, but it's soft and fun to play with. Zen in a small bundle.

Nooo, don't fall apart, yarn ride!
I will be there. I am working from 9 am until 11:30 pm on Saturday, and then I am sleeping, and then I am waking up on Sunday and getting my ass on a bike and buying yarn! Tell me that's not enthusiasm!

On a windy, rainy Sunday, Shannon, Nova, Sarah and I went down to Renaissance Yarn in Kent. Our bikes got much more wet than we did, as the absolute worst downpour occurred while we were in the yarn shop, and afterwards while we were locking up near Shorty's. The 20 mph south wind was much more of a problem, as most of us were flagging going straight south on the Interurban to Kent. Luckily this stretch was not long. The temperatures were balmy enough that even when we got wet we didn't get cold --- take it from the guy in shorts.
We started at Trophy Cupcakes (yum) in Wallingford Center. I didn't hear much good about Bad Woman Yarn (boo). We rolled out at around noon in dry weather and pavement, and took the Lake Washington Loop route down to Renton. Just as we were turning off Rainier, I noticed a rear flat on my bike. This is about when the first hard rain came, so it wasn't a bad thing that we all had to stop under an awning while I swapped in a new tube.
I managed to find a nice route to the Interurban Trail while avoiding the Renton traffic (check the route above), no thanks to the King County Bike Map, which here lists a bogus connection over the railroad tracks near the Family Fun Center north of 405 (unless you count riding directly over the tracks as a good bike route). Instead, I went by my street map, which told me to go under 405 and then turn west into the ex-Longacres-now-Boeing complex. Things did not look good as we rode up to a chain link fence in the middle of a parking lot, but there turned out to be an opening for peds (and bikes!) that led to the Tukwila train station and easy access to the Interurban.
We got to the yarn store at 3, and the knitters bought skeins while I tried to repair the tube. It turned out to have 2 holes, but I didn't find any tire damage. After the deluge at around 3:50, the rain tapered off, but it was still steady and we were hungry, so we all got sandwiches and/or omelettes with coffee at Pat's Bar and Grill around the corner. They may not have fancy cooking, but they know how to lay on the butter.
After our meal, the rain had stopped, but to save time, we went back on the Interurban instead of the windy Green River Trail. At least until the Interurban ended back at the Family Fun Center, at which point it was Green River up to the river crossing at the south end of Boeing Field, and Airport Way/Jackson/1st into Belltown. The sun actually almost came out as we were heading up Airport Way, but just after sunset, as we were rolling into the ID, it started sprinkling again, and turned into a downpour by the time we got to Shorty's at around 7:15.
So, 3 hours there, 2 hours back (thanks to the wind, and no mechanicals). This would make a great 50-ish mile route for a sunny day if you substitute the Green River Trail on the way back. Very flat and mostly pleasant streets/trails while still staying close enough to civilization that you can grab a bite to eat if you need it.
