Fuck fuckity fuck fuck!

(Oh, let me introduce myself. This is Elizabeth, spousal unit to gsbarnes. Sorry to meet you all under such circumstances.)

Two bikes were stolen from our garage last night. Could those of you who regularly watch Craigslist keep an eye out for them?

One is Greg's Marin mountain bike (black, 18.5"); the other is a friend's grey hardtail GT. I'll post the frame size once the owner tells me what it is.

Ugh,
Sorry to hear about that, I'll keep my eyes peeled. Any special requests for what's to be done to the perp if we catch 'em?

Sorry to hear that. We have a (work in progress) questionnaire to fill out that helps us identify the bike and prevent similiar thefts in the future.

Quote:

0) photos
1) the make and model of the lock
2) Location
3) rack type
4) time
5) how it was defeated if you have forensic information.
6) detailed bike description

When I was out in Spokane a few weeks back, one of the local bike rags was talking about a program where all the local bikes shops had set up mailing lists to send out descriptions of stolen bikes so that they could call the cops if someone showed up trying to sell it - Sort of a bike APB if you will.

Not a bad idea. Easily circumvented by pawn shops but I would assume those are a lot less lucrative to sell parts to than an actual bike store so the incentive would be reduced.

Who's 'we'?

Anyway, they were stolen from our garage, unlocked, because I stupidly left the door ajar watering the corn. I'm dubious the corn was worth that much.

Description that I sent to Cascade's stolen bike list:

Black Marin Muirwoods, 18.5". No shocks, V brakes.

When stolen, had the following features: back pannier rack, plastic fenders, bar ends, with a baseball-shaped bell on the right bar end and a mount for a Cateye headlight on the left, Mach 1 bicycle computer, two black water bottle cages, a mount for an Adams Trail-A-Bike (on the seat post), deteriorating black vinyl seat cover (where worn away, looks pink) tied onto the seat with an old shoelace, some heavy, black metal replacement pedals with toeclips, and Continental Contact tires.
Front handlebar had been replaced, as well as the brake pads (Kool Stop)

Serial #C145GSD033

The GT was as Elizabeth described, with very few distinguishing features. It did have one Schrader tube and one Presta, and the paint job was worn enough that you couldn't read the model.

As I said, I've already e-mailed Cascades' stolen bike list. I'll be filing a police report soon, and will also mosey down to Recycled to give them a description and talk with them about a replacement.

The idea for the checklist came up in this thread.

Also I have two other suggestions:

First suggestion for bike recovery (for people whose bike hasn't been stolen yet).

1. Type "free business cards" into google
2. Get cards with your email and phone information on them.
3. Stick in various parts of bike [1]

You may or may not want to laminate or cover them with packing tape. Hell, write "$REWARD$ if found" on the back of them, it can't hurt.

It should be an easy cheap way to prove it's your bike if someone spots it at the least.

Second suggestion: If you're storing bikes in the garage, buy an anchor and lock your bikes to it.

I really should install mine. I've bought it, I just have to drill holes into the concrete.

Speaking of which, I will be happy to swing by with my rotary hammer and bits and help install the thing if you do buy one.

[1] Seatpost, bottom bracket, inside handlebars, inside stem (if you have a hollow with removable faceplate).

My suggestion is don't leave your garage door open all night.

Ah. All night?

Suck. I assumed it was just for a bit and someone nicked it while you weren't watching. I still recommend it even so. It will stop most casual thieves.

Don't even leave your garage open for 30 minutes. That's how my first road bike was stolen...
I spent the next 3 weeks just wishing I was suffering up every hill I saw from out of a car's passenger window...

Actually, I have accidentally left my garage door open all night at least one time before. Not that I recommend it, but it depends on your neighborhood.
