I see many of you are discussing cycling in Amsterdam, so here's a little about what I've observed in Stockholm. It hasn't been much yet, as I haven't even obtained a bicycle here myself. Hopefully that will change this weekend. But I've seen this much as a ped. This is at my school-

City bikes like the dutch ride are very common here. Cruiser bars, racks, chain guards for your pants/dress/skirt, and fenders are on sooo many bikes. I've seen a few mountain bikes and a couple of road bikes, but they generally have racks and fenders too, at least. I have not seen any real expensive looking bikes. Theft must not be a big problem though, as most locks suck. Very frequently, even near what you'd think of as high theft areas like subway stations and universities, bikes are just free locked with a u-lock or some tiny gizmo that only prevents the rear wheel from spinning.

My school provides little stations to pump your tires with some air compressors. This is so incredibly rad. Thank you, engineers who like bikes. Schrader only, so bring an adapter if you need it.

The streets seem very nicely set up for cycling. For one thing, Stockholm is really flat. But there are bike lanes all over the place, oftentimes elevated off the road and separated from the sidewalk by another curb. There are many street signs for bikes, too. And as you can see in this photo, some people do wear helmets here so I can keep wearing mine without feeling like too much of a retard.

I'm kind of looking forward to winter biking. Snow tires and riding on ice!
