do we need to fit all dumptrucks with 360 degree cameras?
Or require special licensing for dump trucks (beyond just CDL certification...) because they are like tanks? Or just outlaw them?
As I mentioned in the other thread, I met and talked to Lauren, roommate of Bryce and girlfriend of Caleb, at the crash site last night. She was beyond blown away by all that had been done. The stenciling especially moved her - since Bryce was an avid stencil artist. (I wonder if he did DIY traffic signs.)
I told her that if she needed us, she could call on us, but she was just so blown away by the whole memorial that she thanked us for everything. I told her it was mostly because we were just scared shitless by the whole thing, and it could have been any one of us, and the only thing we could think to do was to make sure people never forgot what had happened and who was lost. Oh, and paint the fucking road so that cars will respect (or at least be aware of) our measly little 3 feet of street, and our rights at intersections.

Jesus! Forget cameras, I think we need to encase dump trucks in those inflatable castle thingies people rent for their kids' birthday parties.
I stopped by the site on my way home today and everything is still in place. The effect of the bike isn't quite as striking as at night but it's still moving. When I was there, a good 6 or 7 people stopped to read the signs and pause there over the course of just a few minutes.

this is fucking RIDICULOUS!!!
do these drivers live in sequestered caves? is it possible that they didnt know what happened all the way up in Seattle?!?
gawd this makes me so sick...i wonder if the "community" is going to thrash on those careless, helmetless, speeding skaters.

kat: it's called a CDL, although it's not as complicated to get as a license to drive a multi-axle rig or a crane etc.
also, the old rule that says drive like nobody can see you applies even more to work vehicles. their visibility is not the same as the visibility that passenger cars offer. not excusing the incident, just saying. it's another thing.

Even a regular full-sized truck like the one we used to install the Ghostcycle has terrible visibility. Once, while moving, the right rearview mirror had been bumped without my realizing it and when I got on the freeway, it was no use. An average-sized car can hide completely out of sight next to that truck and I'll have no idea it's there.
That drive was terrible. Once I realized what had happened, I tried to stay in the far right lane as much as possible but every right lane change I made, I had to do completely blind until I got to an exit where I could safely readjust the mirror. Those lane changes were basically me signaling for a while and then slowly moving over, hoping everyone there had time to get out of the way.
Basically, the bigger the vehicle, the worse it gets. It also doesn't help that those dump trucks eat the whole land and if oncoming traffic crowds the lane, they often have to dive into the bike lane/shoulder to avoid a head-on collision. I've had construction vehicles come close enough to me to feel the slipstream. If parked cars were hemming me in in that instance, I could have very easily been road chutney.
I just got an email saying I have to go to Georgia the last week of September.
I promise to send a postcard, but promise me the CM ride this month goes to Cap Hill. I'm taking the Madone with me; I'll do the ride in absentia.

oh yeah. also big trucks and their turn radii...
this is of course why big trucks need to use their turn signals religiously, and why it is wise to give them room no matter what you're driving.
what a shitty, shitty situation.

You want DIY bike lanes? We NEED one of THESE. DIY bike lanes any color you want. Text? No prob. We would have to promise to operate it sober, cause no one wants bike lanes that wobble into on-coming traffic, or misspelled massages[sic]. But SRSLY, can some group of nerds make this happen?!
We could write "INSERT BIKE LANE HERE", "CHECK MIRRORS FOR BIKES", "25 TO LIFE, 25 SECONDS UNTIL YOU COULD PASS MY BIKE SAFELY, OR YOU COULD TAKE A LIFE RIGHT NOW" (that may be a little long, but on bike-laneless parts of Eastlake, super necessary and just the right length). We could also write stuff like "LOVE", "MAKE BIKES, NOT GAS WAR" and other hippy shit.
We could totally use that chalk that "isn't permanent" nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean, know what I mean.

kat: i'm retarded
koos: i'm of the camp that anything more complicated than "watch for bikes" or "bike lane goddammit" may be diluting the message
maybe just "goddammit"

Aye, the power of succinct messages, but perhaps the lengthier commentary could be saved for smaller applications aimed at pedestrian traffic. A lengthy message aimed at drivers might be counterproductive, with a driver's attention set on reading and all.
Different point: Traffic lights terminating a downhill should provide a captive audience (at red lights) for anything you paint in the intersection.

If you haven't been down to the accident site yet, you really should. It's a touching memorial to a life cut tragically short.
I went down last night and couldn't help getting a bit overwhelmed.
After seeing that I hade a great ride, it puts things in perspective.

When driving, and you are at a stop light, and the light turns green, What do you do?
Floor it of course, right?
Fuck, no! You look left, then right then left again, then you accelerate, normally.
Unless of course you are on the fucking phone, then you DO NOT EVEN LOOK LEFT OR RIGHT BUT SIMPLY FLOOR IT! Saw it last night, yet again. If you are turning and on the phone, get the fuck out of the way.
That said, bike lane on the right of car lanes are pretty stupid. They make bikes feel safe and like they have the right of way. They do not. David Smith may have a point here, but the real delema is getting drivers to pay attention and hang up an drive!
We need a Road License that must be renewed every 5 years for FREE, unless you plan on driving a car or truck, then you have a $100 fee. A Road License would apply to everyone starting at age 12 and it would include such questions/situations as what to do at an intersection with a bike lane on the right side of the right driving lane.
Please don't get me wrong. I am mad as hell that someone again died, but I do not blame the truck driver or the deceased. I blame the system and the lack of proper road use education.
For instance, it is already ILLEGAL to drive while talking on a cell phone. It is ILLEGAL to pass a cyclist without switching lanes. It is ILLEGAL to pass a car or bike with a cyclisist in the oncoming lane. It is ILLEGAL to honk at a cyclist except in an emergency where life or property is at stake. etc. etc.
Point is, NO ONE KNOWS bout these laws except MAYBE the 16 year old just getting their first drivers license.
Laws do no good without education.

"He failed to yield to them when they had the right of way," said the plaintiffs' attorney, John Christensen.
Nelson and Sons declined to comment Tuesday on the case, and the driver, David McClane, could not be reached.
Christensen said he was told the Seattle Police Department has completed its investigation and is referring the case to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
"We'll review it when it comes in and decide whether or not any criminal charges will be filed," said prosecutor's spokesman Dan Donohoe.
...when they heard a vehicle gun its engine. The officers turned to see a black Cadillac pointed at them.
"It just charged toward them at a high rate of speed," said D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier. "The fact that someone intentionally ran down these officers is very disturbing."
Seems to me the circumstances are a bit different, police involvement notwithstanding.

This is true. I drive these kinda trucks daily. seeing out of them is very difficult.
I'll give any one of you a ride in a dump truck some time or any large truck for that matter. No one is 100% sure what happend it Bryce. But placing blame on the truck driver is bullshit. This guy is trying to make a living just as you or I.
As for cameras, that will never work. Yep I'm going to take my eyes off the road to check my camera. DUMB.
GUYS, GIRLS Ya better hit the fucking brakes if a truck is on your left near an intersection. It may turn.
And last, In Wa. state a dump truck can carry 65,000lbs. With a Trailer 105,000lbs. YOU WILL NOT WIN. WAKE UP! Keep in mind everthing you buy comes on a truck.

ya know SKETCH, you might be on to something here.
I mean really, you bike like a freakazoid and drive those monstrosities, so maybe , JUST MAYBE, you can finally give some back to the world (besides that abortion ya leave in the toilet weekly) and come up with something that can help truck drivers see bikes.
