When I read that article this morning, I was sure it had to be a troll written by Henry or Derek.

Don't forget bicycle insurance, for all those farmers markets we plow into asleep at the handlebars.

I *LOVE* getting car insurance and AAA phone solicitations.
The WTF sound in their voice when I ask them if they have anything for bicycles and tell them that I don't own a car is priceless.

renters & home owners insurance are the policies that cover your bikes and anyone you might injure (minus yourself of course) with you bicycle.

So, anyone want to write a guest editorial to the P-I addressing some of this troll's idiocy? Also, it should be just as inflammatory, maybe explain how using a 4000 pound fossil fuel powered ped crusher is immoral, or how paving over our land so that someone can waddle a shorter distance to get cheap fat jeans from china at the fred-mart is hardly a rational use of resources.
Also, not me. I've already been exposed as a radical by that crusader for truth and justice, Ken Schram.

I think a lot of the anti bike sentiments are just a product of our form of transportations looking different, and being easy to target. Cars probably cuss out and get frustrated with other cars just as much as with bikers, its just that bikes are way more visible when we flip them off or yell back. Plus, we take greater offense because we are less protected and can actually hear the insults shouted at us.
I've seen convertibles with the top down mouth "thank you" to me, yet when they curse my existence they're not so mute.
BTW, CM is anti-social? WTF? That is the most social thing ever! We should do more fliering at CM. Happy fliers, explaining what corking is, why we do it (safety, no not that kind of safety), what CM is, how anyone can join in, and how we thank them for suffering through an extra 5 minutes of commute on just one friday of the month.
I also want a flier that says "if you can't beat them, join them" that I can hand out as I pass cars in heavy traffic, and maybe a "don't knock it, 'til you try it" flier as well.
Ass for naked guys, I could do with less of that on CM.

im all for people getting nekid...on their own time!
1 is bad, 3 is unfuckingtolorable.
sounds like blankets need to brought to the next CM and a group wrap should ensue.
or we could protest their lack of clothing options by not rolling out till they put on some damn clothes.

anyone else inspired to have an all (or near, cause ya right we're getting everyone naked) nude Mass? There's no law in this city about being naked, only lewd. This will be our last month for getting our bits & pieces sunburned!

Sounds like we need a pants cannon/"care package", and a megaphone to shout "Put some pants on you nudie freaks" as we ride down the street.

Whats wrong Trevor? do naked guys make you nervous?
If it were a girl, none of you would complain (as long as she was hot)
Leave them alone.

Precisely. People tend to enjoy looking at attractive people.
People who like to get naked in public are never the people you'd want to see naked.
For evidence search "World naked bike ride" on flickr.
Case closed.

It is no one's right to not be offended.
That said, I'd really like to spray a pair of Rustoleum shorts on those hairy-assed guys the next CM.

I can think of plenty of girls I'd complain about seeing naked. Naked != interesting.
just something so I don't have to look at someone's "Peaches and Cream" or whatever you want to call it.

This is where I'd like to use the change-the-channel argument. If you don't like it, look/ride away. If I remember correctly, naked-guy isn't particularly fast. Is a naked person that big of a deal? And agreeing with Cass, I bet there would be a cloud of riders around any naked hot chick.

Not true at the beaches in Barcelona. There were some pretty attractive topless girls that were worried about upper tan lines.

no nekid guys dont make me nervous, you tattooed goof, they make OTHERS nervous to the point of not participating in something, and that is uncool.
and to derail this thought train, I DONT GIVE A FLYING FUCK.
and your right, if it were a girl it would be different cause girl have sexy, curvy bodies.
duh

Actually, I would for two reasons:
One, as someone who tends to cork often, I get stuck near the back watching their arses do their best Queen album art impression. Gender wouldn't matter. It pains my soul to see what desecration they make against a finely handstitched Selle San Marco Italian leather and carbon fibre seat.
You wankers.
Second, naked wankers on bikes hijack CM and ruin its message for the sake of their spectacle, as illustrated by the woman on the corner of Pike and First covering her young son's eyes so as to "protect" him. It wouldn't matter the gender, the kid is now carrying two misconceptions: nudity in any context is a bad thing, and cyclists are a scourge amongst upstanding persons.
As for blanket parties... as a graduate of an Academy, I can neither confirm nor deny that a bag of uncooked minute rice at the end of a tied off arm warmer makes a fine behavioural recalibration device.
a bag of uncooked minute rice at the end of a tied off arm warmer makes a fine behavioural recalibration device.
So now we are fighting nudity with violence? Mass is peaceful. Lets keep it that way for everyone regardless of clothing.
I'm not even going to begin to argue this, as it is pointless.

Since Eric has already been "exposed", it's good to know that someone wrote a retort to this douchebag's editorial.
Well, I've been around the block a few times, so I'm not all butt-hurt about it; the cognitive dissonance displayed by a large number of commenters gives me a headache. Really, we should create a redirect link to something like (WARNING: DON'T CLICK ON ANY OF THESE) theseterriblesights, post it, and claim that it's a Discovery Institute Study proving that cyclists are commies and that our economy and climate would get better until the rapture if we all drove SUVs everywhere.

goddammit! I did it again.... I read the whole fucking sound off. Now i have to be angry for the rest of my lunch brake... fuck... where the hell is my metallica!?! I left my ipod at home! jeezus... Today sux!
Awesome article by that guy! Don't read the sound off. I don't think that forums are actually representative of the actual pH of the bicycle controversy, its only two groups of angry people spiraling into more hate, right? I'd like to think so.
Start habitually waving at cars for doing good. Don't hate, appreciate. Reward, not punish.
Punishing, done improperly, makes the administer-er of the punishment the focal point of the act. Punishing should be done such that the punished parties don't know who did it, or if it was even a bicyclist in this case. Punishment should be done the instant the the punished commits the badness. Conversely, you can reward anytime, and if they think it is just you being nice, so you made a friend.
Wave at the cars that notice you when turning across your bike lane. Smile at people when they stop for you. Be especially nice to kids in cars; it's like a church, "hook 'em while they're young!"

In that same vein, on CM style rides, it might be a good idea to have flyers we can hand out to the peds and cars explaining what CM is about.
For each set of corkers, someone could ride up to the stopped cars and pass out flyers, there's plenty of time at most CMs to hit the first couple rows of stopped cars.
Taping some candy or something to the flyers would be a bonus. It's much harder for people to get mad if you make them feel obligated to you - even if it's just for a lifesaver or whatever.
