I was trackstanding at the intersection of Pike and Boren today heading up the hill from work. I was waiting at the light, it turned green I put pressure on my left foot to start rolling up and *snap!* My bottom bracket straight snaps and sends me hurling into the middle of the intersection. I laid there stunned for a split second, hoping my new pedals had just come loose or something, but sure enough, I looked over to see my whole fucking crank arm lying in the middle of the road. I picked it up and walked my bike home the whole rest of the way (almost to Montlake). Now I know some of you have multiple bikes and whatever so this wouldn't be too big of a deal, but this baby's all I got and I was almost in tears for the rest of the trip. I seriously have no other viable source of transportation and I just can't afford to buy a new bottom bracket until at least this weekend. Hell, I don't even know if new one would fit into my old ass Peugeot anyway. I just don't know what to do here and I'm most pissed about not being able to participate in tomorrow's ride/eat off. If there's any way at all that any of you have or know of any way to fix this kind of thing quick and dirty, or if you just have a bike I might be able to borrow for tomorrow I would love you forever. You can borrow my fixed gear if you can get up to 68th and 20th to pick it up. It's got SPDs on it, but i could put whatever pedals you bring on it, or some crappy cages.

Argh, yeah I think 56 is too small, I'd be toverlapping all over the place, thanks though.

I have one of them fancy Mavic universal bottom brackets you could buy off me for cheap. They are the last resort for stripped bb threads or awkward French bottom brackets. They are a little hairy for installing, you need a special tool that I think Aaron is the only mechanic in town who has one, and it does permanently funky things to your bb shell to work.

How reliable are those universal BBs? I'd be willing to bet a boatload that its a french BB just because it's an old Peugeot bike, and I'm pretty certain the BB that just broke is stock.
I borrowed Stick's Laing, which is amazing but I want to ride it as little as possible just because one, it's a nice fucking bike and I'm constantly scared of fucking it up. But two, it's not my bike and I miss her already :( So maybe Wednesday I can bring her over to someone's place and we can see what the deal is. I might be able to swing some cheapness, depending on how cheap the cheapness, other than that I was going to see about buying a whole new crank set and BB this weekend.

Apart from permanently changing the BB threading, they are pretty good. If your's is French, the best bet is to replace the spindle and hope the cups are OK. If not, a new frame is in order, which pretty much means new bike.

You have no idea how much my heart sank when I read that. If it comes down to that, I'd rather figure out how to cram a universal BB in there, even if it means it's the last BB I'll ever be able to put in. As long as I can ride that baby for just a little longer...

Oh man, that would be wonderful. I'm not sure about sizing, I haven't been able to take it out yet and take a look at it, but I'll let you know.

You might only be able to use the axle (which sounds okay). The BB is Swiss threaded. Which means it's the same size and TPI as french, but it uses the conventional threading, instead of the retarded right threading on the fixed cup.
