Amanda's brakes squeal like you wouldn't believe, unless you've experienced them first hand in which you probably do believe it but are trying to block the memory.

Anyway, i had Master Nygaard take a look, he sanded down the pads and called them good to go. Still squealy.

I replaced the pads on the font, still fucking squealy.

So i swapped out front wheel with another one i had around ... Not Squealy!

Wtf do i have to do to her rims to get them to SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP.

For the record these are the stock rims on a late 90s Rockhopper and they seem to have some kind of black finish on them including on the braking surface.

Seriously, she get's home late at night and it wakes up the whole house. Children break into tears when she slows near them. And most importantly she's hesitant to use the brakes because of the squeal which poses obvious safety hazards.

I figure i could take the Miles route ... but two girlfriends on one bike is probably only going to exacerbate the squeak.

Obviously the Derrick Method only increases the problem by not only having the weight of 3-4 girls on the bike at a given time, but also having to stop periodically to swap them out and find new ones on the internet.

What i really need is the Langston Technique of finding a girl that will buy me and her both new bikes.

I'm having the same problem with the new front wheel on my bike. My plan was to sand down the rim's sidewall to remove any finish that is on them.

The sad part is that I've resorted to using my rear brakes (which I normally ignore) and have now found that those ones squeal too. Can't win.

Sorry, I have no advice for how to carry multiple girlfriends in waterbottle cages.

tow in, tow out, steel wool the brake surface, sandpaper the pads.
if that doesn't work, just keep readjusting them slightly and testing it.

I was eyeing the sandpaper on Monday, I'll give this a try.

Grease them up really well and they will stop squeaking for sure. The squeaking may be replaced by the girlfriend's screaming when she finds herself incapable of stopping though.

You're missing a key difference that poses an additional difficulty - the derrick method requires getting 4 girls on the bike at once such that none of them know the other one is there. Gotta be tough.

sandpaper or steel wool = machining your own damn rims?

I hope you have fun giving your girlfriend a rim job.

Well, drat. One of the only things I hate about rushing through stuff (damn wife studying) and not getting a test ride in. I'd be game to come to your place and sort it out. it you like. Say 21:00 or so on Thursday? Friday? Saturday? Any time on Sunday?

Call me.

It worked for me. My rims are just basic Sun CR18 and there was probably just a light varnish or something to prevent the aluminum from oxidizing. If your rims are hard anodized then it'll take more scrubbing. On my bike it was about 3 minutes of work.

Also, check to make sure that she hasn't run over a bunch of cherries and let the juice dry on the rims. That also makes a nasty squealing noise.

It's the taste, I get that complaint. Butt now it's better, I ate a bunch of fries the other night... Wait, where were you again?

DIY machined rims, next thing you know you'll be sewing your own pants, silk-screening tight American Apparel shirts, and riding a fixed gear.

DIY or die!!!

I'll de-squeal your breaks but only if I can squeeze your [man]boobs.

Brakes spelled wrong on porpoise.
