so I got my bike all working and pretty again, but anyone know any places around here that do powdercoating? I want to schnazz it up a little extra.

I do and I'm putting an order together. I've got two or three frames and forks to go so far. It'll be about three weeks before I take them in though. Should be about $100 for blasting and coating. I don't think they have a color charge, so I don't think they will charge extra if you want a different color than me.

oh totally rad, what color are you doing? Also, I don't know much about the process, can I pretty much get anything coated without it effecting preformance? Like if I threw my cranks, stem, things like that in there, is anything going to be mucked up?

Along the lines of powdercoating, does anyone in the area do anodization? My 'cross bike is anodized, and it's great because it is basically rust proof, grit proof and scratch proof. Plus washing it is criminally easy.

Conversely, my commuter/foul weather bike is metallic orange, and it's already starting to dull and foul. I'd like to get it anodized before it starts to get down to the frame's metal.

Yes, it's aluminium. I know that it's trek's "alpha SLR" alloy. What that translates into in terms of industry alloys (I.e. 5506 or 7700, etc.), I don't know.

Are you saying you know a place that does this?

There are metal-flake colors available in powder. A friend has a silver powder coated that has metal-flake overboard. He had it done in Spokane though.

Chris -- Are you going to the place in Mulketio? If you are doing anything in black or silver I might be interested in throwing a rack or two into the mix. I have some bikes to powdercoat too, but probably in the spring.

I think Alex was pointing out the misnomer common in the bicycle industry (and maybe elsewhere) of calling aluminum parts "alloy." Sure, you're aluminum parts are an alloy, but so are your steel parts. They're an alloy of iron, chromium, molybdenum, and some other stuff. In fact almost everything made of metal is an alloy. It's ridiculous to try to identify only aluminum parts as "alloy."

Also: if your bike is made of aluminum (and therefore able to be anodized--steel things aren't), it's already rust-proof.

Sorry guys, I wasn't expecting a peer review journal like analysis of my usage of "alloy" when speaking about bike frames and anodizing.

Clearly, all metals in your bike are alloys of some kind. Nothing is pure. I colloquially used "alloy" when referring to anodizing a frame when I should have said an aluminum alloy frame.

Blah, blah blah. only iron-alloy frames rust. Carbon-fiber-alloy frames just break. Polysiloxane alloys make things jiggly. You could anodize it yourself, with a welder and huge tank of acid.

I have an older steel Fuji in need of a new paint job and powder coating sounds better than urinating on it (to remove the flaking clear coat) as Langston suggested.

I volunteer to help with the logistics of dropping off the frames/forks and picking them up, if that, in fact, would be helpful.

I have off Mondays, Tuesdays, and most of Wednesdays, so I shouldn't have a problem picking up and dropping off. I'll let you know though.

Anyone have an idea if there would there be any discount for a prepped frame? I've already stripped most of the paint off the frame, but if there's no difference I might as well leave it like it is.

Confused.

Are we powder coating, anodizing or pissing on our bikes? 'Cause if we're powder coating and the price is right I just might be down.

Also are we getting a bulk deal if we bring so many parts? Will they bead blast? who are these people? Why am I still writing this?/

if this deal is still going on i have a frame i'd like coated and on that needs to be bead blasted too.

does any one know how does blasting in the area for an affordable amount?? or someone with a cabinet that would sell me some time on it. i had my own powdercoating gig at one time so i know how to do it, i just don't have the facilities to make it happen

keep me posted if this bird gets off of the ground.

I will be counting up names, PMing interested parties, and trying to set up a time to collect money and "things to be powdercoated". I'd like to do it next week, so think Sun/Mon as days to have money and stuff for me. Also, I don't have a clear idea yet about color options or if there is an upcharge for wanting a color other than battleship grey. If this color offends you, you may need to pay a bit extra, but I'll know more by Friday. Same is true for small parts. I'll know more about them at the same time as I know about color options.

Cost: $110.00 (Probably less, and you'll get money back if so, I just can't front it)
Turn around: About one week from drop off.
Requirements:
- No carbon fiber anything. None. Not possible. I'll just take the $110 as a stupid tax.
- Stripped frames (i.e.: stipped of all parts)
- No hardware in any small parts
- Remove any stickers you can, etc.
- Please clean anything as best you can (i.e., no grease blobs, road dirt, chain goop).

There are a sellection of colors, but stock is limited to what they have on hand. If you tell me what you want, I'll see if I can get it. Bonus points for giving me a color index number.

Is there a universal set of color index numbers or is it specific by maker of powder coating? There seems to be a "RAL" standard.

We are go for weekend pickup/dropoff of bike bits for powdercoating. I just got off the phone with the guy and we are set. Small parts are no problem, so it you want a matching stem, rims, cranks or something, get me those too. He's got a grey in stock that sounds good, and I will confirm color options for those of you who wanted something else. If they need to order it, it may take longer and will cost a bit more, but I'll know more about that once I am there and will call those people to update them. Call me or PM me if you have any questions.
