Is this some kind of far reaching scheme run by fixie hipsters to surround us with pipebombs? Or are they just pawns in this massive terrorist plot?

I feel perfectly safe with Iraqi street violence not having reached the North-American Northwest quite yet. If a security contractor started firing off in the middle of Pioneer Square I'm sure some shit would go down. I must say though that reminders of my fleeting existence strapped to this frail body are always bothersome.
So, try to be happy and live life until your hopefully unexpected demise, and if you wish, if it makes you smile, if it brings some light to your soul: call in a bomb warning at the sight such stickers and have the fuzz water-cannon that adhesive backed counter-culture icon right off that fixie frame.
Oh, and don't eat during fasting hours... it's frowned upon.

Two 13 year-old girls struck by car in Snohomish County

SNOHOMISH, Wash. – Two teenage girls remain in critical condition after they were hit by a car Friday night while biking near Lake Stevens.
The girls, both 13, were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center and both underwent surjery on Saturday.
Shortly before 6 p.m., the bicyclists were hit by a driver on the Machias Cutoff Road in Snohomish County. Snohomish Fire and Rescue said the motorist, a woman, was driving eastbound when she became distracted by a dog inside her vehicle. The car hit the girls and then hit a utility pole.
There are no bike paths, lights, shoulders or sidewalks. Locals say the stretch of road where the girls were hit is dangerous.

This story hits much closer to home than my excuse to make fun of all those stickers.
It's interesting that they point out that that road is dangerous, because, of course, on a plain 2 lane road like that there really is little room for error, either for the cyclists or drivers, but in this case it wouldn't have mattered if there was a shoulder/bike lane/sidewalk, since the driver completely drove off the road into a utility pole. I hope they aren't implying that the girls shouldn't have been on the road as a way to draw any attention from the driver's error.

yeah...shitty road, from neighbor reports, accidents happen all the time there. No shoulder to ride on and in the north end, folks are waaaay less bike friendly. Not like it would matter when you riding on a road at 6 pm and some dumbass is fussing with their gawddamn dog while driving.

I learned to drive out on those roads. It's a great area for riding, tons of rolling hills, quite farm roads and pleasent views. There are a few scary bits of road out there, and Machias Rd is one of them. I like trev's analogy about handguns and automobiles, but I am well aware of the mindset of privledge and "but I HAVE to drive" mindset that prevails out there.

I really don't care if people drive as long as they do so with at least a minimal amount of care for what they are doing. Running two people down because your dog needs attention is just stupid. If that dog was doing anything short of attacking the driver, she should have kept her damn eyes on the road.
Which one, the dogs not well enough restrained that they could get to the driver's seat or the woman who failed to restrain them?
Seriously though, I completely agree with the notion that this woman needs to have her licence rescinded. People this irresponsible WILL get in more similar accidents. This isn't a chance event or a poor road that caused the accident. Much like that Seattle rabbi who has had two car-bike accidents and a handful of near misses, she will eventually kill someone.
The fundamental problem is that at some point, operating a motor vehicle transitioned from a privilege to a right to a necessity for transportation. These accidents will continue until this attitude is fixed.

I've been riding on that area too, and it's nice, but it makes you realize how much trust you put in other people on the road, especially since a small distraction can have devastating consequences. There's an article in the PI today about making tougher laws against distracted drivers, but they don't seem like enough.
