Do not, repeat, DO NOT read the Sound Off on this.

I did and I want to go buy a rifle now.

Note to self, if you ever start getting faith in humanity, read Sound-Off, this will fix things quickly.

Somebody already said this elsewhere, but it bears repeating.

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE.

People are arguing what the voices in their heads tell them to. Ugh.

I'm bothered by folks pointing out that many cyclists also own and drive automobiles as though that should give them more credibility or right to use roads. shouldn't being a driver hurt credibility? to adapt David Neiwert's analogy, that's like a chap assuring you that because he is a bigot you should trust him on issues of race relations.

automobiles are a really bad idea from any but the most myopic point of view. sure, it's difficult to give them up, but I'm not sure that's such a great excuse for what looks to me like bragging about shitting where you eat.

but, how unreasonable of me.

I own and routinely drive a car. But given a choice, I prefer to ride a bike. You can attach whatever political/social/ecological/entertainment message to that act that you'd like. But really, I just like riding bikes because of the people with whom you get to ride. Driving my car has no equivalent social aspect. Even with car clubs, you can't socialise whilst participating. You have to stop and get out of the car.

I really don't think that I am a driver gives me any more (or less) credibility; (hey, who's keeping the count on semicolons again?) the talkback has already illustrated that no one is listening to each other anyways.

And really, cars aren't the problem, its over-reliance, over-valuation and over-use of cars by their drivers that is the problem. Completely giving up cars is not any better an idea than everyone driving a single passenger car. Rarely is the extreme solution the best.
