Out of the foundue ride came the best plan ever:
In March, some us are riding from Narita Airport to Tokyo Disneyland. On Thursday. At 7:00PM.
We'll Fly there with our bikes.
Unbox them in the airport,
Ride the 40 miles (in the dark, in a foreign country) direct to the theme park.
Spend the night at a hotel right outside the park.
Go to Disneyland the next day.
Then, people short on time can ride straight back to the airport and fly home, while others can spend a little time in Tokyo.
Three of us are going for sure! Who's with me?

I'd love to, but I don't think I can scrape together the $1,000 to get to and from Japan by Thursday evening.

Hell's yes. The most ridiculous idea in the universe and a great use of the credit card.
Yes!

I may very well be the poorest motherfucker in .83 with my phone about to be disconnected, otherwise I would be so fucking in. You fucking toy with me!
Do you know why I am so poor? Because I have an annual pass to Disneyland California! It's true. I do. It doesn't expire until July of 2008. I rode there this summer on my trip. When other bicycle tourists asked us where we were heading while riding along the california coast, we replied "DIsneyland" and it was true. TRUE!!!!!
So since I have already gone into extreme debt participating in this sort of activity, I may not be above now instigating a life of crime in order to produce the funds for just such a thing. I will know more as the date approaches. Here, my proofs (please note 2 years of .83 spokecards representing)!

Re: trip
It sounds like great fun, unfortunately, I really can't afford to drop a grand for a lark trip. I'm saving up for an inclusive Asia trip. But have fun and bring back some goddamned Pocky for the rest of us.

Bake sale! Fundraiser! Dance-a-thon! Dunking booth! Coinstar! Actually, given your level of enthusiasm and commitment for Disneyland (an annual pass?!?!?!) needs to be sponsored. You shouldn't pay a dime.

Yes, it's true. Perhaps there should be a fundraiser. Perhaps all of the ladies of .83 would donate themselves to a "buy a bike ride with your favorite lady" sale, because this is certainly the only thing that would actually bring in money. That and beer, and I don't have any beer to sell.

OK, so I'm a little perplexed about what the nurse outfits have to do with a Haunted Mansion but really, I'm starting to think that trying to comprehend the Japanese psyche isn't even remotely possible:

God I love pointy3.
With any luck I'll be in Brazil then... Do they have a Disneyland?
I might come, too! Like the weak ass Seattle 'maybe' that probably means 'no.' But shit, if I find myself still here, and with an extra grand to spare... I'm there!
Cause it sounds like a fucking blast.

This may be the best and worst idea ever. Bwerst, borst? Borscht?
Actually, I've been meaning to head to Japan with the bike for a while (nearly was there right now), but this may or may not be the best schedule. I'll look into it, though.

Hmm. If I somehow have the money and don't have too much going on with school, fuck it, I'm in. I've got no class or exams from the 15th-25th of March, so that would be the ideal window for me. But I'm a graduate student now, though, so it is quite unlikely that I'll have the cash.
While on the subject of multi-continent rides, I would like to suggest one in Sweden some time. I recommend winter so we can do a certain-to-be-painful race involving frozen lakes. Hell, people ice skate out in the Baltic, and if it's a cold enough winter you can in theory cross the ice all the way to Helsinki. The Russians marched across the Baltic to Sweden during the Finnish War, but this may no longer be possible what with global warming and all...

Most likly November.
I'll probably be flying Northwest because of frequent flyer status, but all the flights from America get in within a few hours of each other. If a couple people end up on a different flight, the early arrivals can just explore Narita airport for a bit. it's awesome!

Good times. I may actually be crazy enough to do this with you guys, but it will definitely require a bit of thought, as it involves a significant amount of two valuable commoditites: time and money.
That being said, if anyone is looking into buying tickets, I've always found IACE Travel to be a good place to look for reasonable tickets to Japan. Be warned, though! The prices on their website don't include gas costs, which seem to run at least $250 (if not $300) these days. That being said, I have found some good deals in the past.

Yeah, I'm not sure how well CM would go down in Japan, with their kind of obsessive observance of laws and all...

if i have money for this (and that is an if of grand magnitude), i am so in. i have a friend in japan i've been meaning to visit for about forever.
it would be really nice if we could time this trip so we could join up with the Tokyo Bike Meet-up. I can't quite discern their schedule; it seems to be a 'whenever we feel like it' sort of affair. There might be some message board clues, but I can't read moon language. Maybe if we ask them, though..

I hear you.
Nevertheless, there is a (very short) Tokyo CM video floating around on YouTube:
According to the caption at the end, it occurs on the last Saturday of every month at 15:00, in front of NHK Hall. As of August 2000, anyway.
I like the guy waving his flag, with (essentially) "Let's ride!" in big red letters. :)

I plan on buying tickets in about November. The trip is in March.
And people are welcome to buy tickets after November, although you're less likely to end up on the officially designated .83 airplane. Most airlines still do free drinks in coach for transpac, by the way. Prefunk!

!!! That's a really good point. The new passport requirements to go to Canada and Mexico have resulted in an huge backlog of passport applications.
If you want to go and you don't want to pay for rush service, apply for your passport NOW.

Small world... Turns out I have an in with those guys and someone I want to hook up with while we are there. I'll e-mail him and sort it. I may run into him at the Hand Build show in Portland. I'll be sure to get him out for a Point83 style ride so he know what to expect of us in Tokyo.

I wonder what a plane ticket to South America costs from Japan... or if Japan has any work trade organic farms...
