there's some manner of enforcement thing going on on campus today- two cops are stoplling anyone on bikes and letting the kids know that they should be walking their bikes and wearing a helmet. all fine and good, i didn't know that that law extended to campus (and i'm still not totally sure it does).

except the cop got my attention by running into me from behind.

i just switched back to clipless today, and nearly pulled a rogelio when he bumped me. barely caught myself. dude then proceeds to get all uppity about not wearing a helmet, and telling me he's a nice guy for not citing me immediately. nobody ever gets anywhere by talking back to cops, but i couldn't help it.

"wait, i have to wear a helmet on campus?"
"it's king county, right? the law is simple."
"yeah, but i thought that law only applied if you were riding public roads."
"this is king county, right? don't ask me 'on campus' again."
"wait, so what about in my apartment?"
"it's king county, right?"

his partner stopped me literally 30 seconds later as i was riding away and told me i could be cited for $103 for riding "unsafely" through people. this wasn't passing period, either. i told him he should talk to his partner who nearly knocked me off my bike from behind.

in short, fuck those guys.

Thanks for the tip. I rode through the people on campus today as well. I'll watch out for those cops.

i'll be sure to ride thru campus on my way to , uh, Stone Way...

FUCK i hate cops with their own agendas!

Keep in mind this is the UW campus cops we're talking about.

An institution built on Honor and Justice. And giving Sorority girls rides home.

Fuck, that's the job i need.

don't forget giving people speeding tickets for 4mph over! i'm glad i don't have to ride across campus for my commute anymore, the cops have decided to crack down on bicycles something fierce in the last couple years.

may i suggest one of these for the asshattery?

i'd like to see one of those kittenfuckers catch me in anything less than a squadcar.

Lifted stright from the Washington Bike Law web site:

"Where is the local helmet law? In the Seattle Municipal Code? No. In the King County Code? Nope. With some determination, you might find it hidden in the King County Board of Health Code, provided you can find the King County Board of Health Code.
The hard-to-find law states, “Any person operating or riding on a bicycle not powered by motor on a public roadway, bicycle path or on any right-of-way or publicly owned facilities located in King County including Seattle, shall wear a protective helmet designed for bicycle safety.” [BOH 9.10.010(A)]
Any police officer can impose a $30 fine for violations of this law, however few do, perhaps because they can’t find the helmet law under which to make the charge."

So that MAY explain why they'd rather TALK OUT THEIR ASSES than actually DO police work.

They recently rescinded the 'passing period' clause and changed it to 'when pedestrians are present'.

Still, the guys are being asshats with their "I'm being a nice guy" routine, because they always start the quarter by giving out warnings the first week or so before going to the tickets. Suppose you were some freshman in from Yakima; how are you supposed to know about King County and UW bike laws?

First, Koos, read the whole thread.
Second, Never has there been a Haloween that so desperately cried out for "drunken bike cop" costumes.
Third, can cops enforce the county health code? Isn't that the county health inspector's/ cascade's job?

I actually asked my JAG about this a month or so ago, and he said he'd have a field day at a trial if this ever did happen. I'm not sure whether this means the officer can or not, just that any lawyer worth half his or her salt could probably get you off the hook with a not-guilty plea, or at least get the "offence" talked down to a stern warning from the judge.
