Hey guys, keep your eyes out for a 19 inch green/black '07 Novara Bonanza mountain bike. I had it locked in the parking garage in my apartment and hadn't been using it because I have a broken wrist and I needed to patch the back tire. I was going to get a patch kit today and when i checked the garage the bike was gone and my lock was cut on the ground. It was the nicest cable lock I could find... I hadn't checked on the bike in about a week, so it could've happened several days ago...

Total Bummer... I wanted to ride critical mass tomorrow.

So, basically, who can loan this poor kid a bike for tomorrow?

Good point...

If anybody does have something I could borrow for the ride I would be totally stoked! I will buy you a 6 pack for the help! Call me at any hour 503-522-0372

I'm not picky... however my left wrist is broken and this means I'd be riding one handed, so a fixie might be a bad idea

And there's your problem. Cable locks might as well be a piece of string if the thief is worth half his salt. It really is worth it to get a quality U-Lock with an armoured key slot.

Also, do you have renters/homeowner's insurance? If so, you can make a claim for the bike in all likelihood, and it's a lot less to pay the deductible than buy a new bike. All you'll need is a police report that the bike was stolen.

If you don't have renter's insurance (and this goes for all of us .83'ers...), GET IT. It's about $120 a year for me (paid in $10 monthly installments... I mean come on, if you've got a steady source of income, you'd hardly miss $10 a month), and it covers the first $15,000 worth of stuff that gets lost by theft, fire, most natural disasters, even impact by passenger plane into my apartment.

Also, you might want to check to see if your lock had a warranty/guarantee against theft while properly employed. Again, you'll need a police report, proof of ownership (like a receipt or a notarized inventory), and they'll probably want the defeated lock. In exchange, you'd get a check for replacement up to the guarantee amount.

This brings up another point, .83'ers: if you don't have all of your bike receipts, get a notarized inventory, complete with model name/number, make, and serial numbers done IMMEDIATELY. The police and insurance companies will be so much easier to deal with if you have this info BEFORE the theft.

I called the cops and got a case number, I'll have to look into the insurance claim thing...

I managed to find a friend with a bike I can borrow, so I'll be there for tomorrow's ride for sure!

Yeah, a serial number is the only way you can prove a bike is yours. Having it listed on a bill of sale is best. A bill of sale can be just a scrap of paper with who you purchased it from (used bikes too), their name, address, signature and the serial number with the price you paid. I got one of my rental bikes back that way. The cops said there was nothing I could do if I did not have the serial number to prove it was mine. The pawn shop I got it back from did NOT have good records. They did not have a bill of sale from the person they purchased it from!

What company do you get your insurance from?

double-plus agree with the renter's insurance! a few years ago my mountain bike got stolen and i got a check for $500, pretty much no questions asked. that's over six years of my annual payments in value.

USAA. They're organized similar to a credit union, except since they're a bank, they can offer insurance and investments also. I recommend them. Unfortunately, although they have great service and rates, they also have restrictive membership. Pretty much have to be in the military or national guard, or have a parent who is an active member.

That said, there are plenty of companies out there that do renters insurance, and even the worst of them is very affordable.

Thanks for the information, everyone.

Lee, it looks like yours is quite a bit cheaper, though, at ~$80 a year (or less). I didn't realize there were renter's insurance plans that went that low, but I'm not complaining if they do!

i've got mine from grange insurance, i think it's a grandfathered rate because i've had it for the last decade and it's only gone up by a few bucks. the first couple years were part of my graduation present from high school. my mother, bless her heart, she's relentlessly practical.

The single biggest thing that will affect your premium is the amount that you have insured, followed closely by the size of your deductible. Much like health insurance or auto insurance, you have to size the plan to realistically fit your budget and the amount of your possessions you want to insure.

So here's a positive update... I had all the right info on the bike (serial #, reciept, police report/case #, all that shit)

Renters insurance is going to cover it... so after the $250 deductible I will get about $350 back or a little over half the cost of my bike... WHICH IS WAY FUCKING BETTER THAN NOTHING!!!! and easily enough to get me something to replace it...

So if anybody has a 19''ish mountain bike on the market for around $3-400 let me know... probably closer to the 3 end so I can get a good U-lock this time...

Live and learn... and hopefully you won't go extinct
