Countdown to a new era: all aboard Link light rail starting July 18
Free rides during opening weekend
Sound Transit Board Chair and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels today announced a start date of Saturday, July 18 for Link light rail service — 89 days and counting!
This describes us without the light rail to give us pinch flats, handlebar-buckings and other non-rubber side down riding.
I, for one, welcome our new deathtrap public transportation overlords. Why? More crashes and mechanicals give me a better chance to catch you guys when I show up to westlake nine minutes late without stopping every five minutes to call for a position report.
Also, take note: the victim on that sign is clearly riding a fixie death trap. Notice the bullgrip style handlebar and lack of derailleur and brake hoods.
Erica and Stranger, take note! Light rail encourages more unskilled riders to choose dangerous bikes!

Fixie? There's no chain! That's one of those telekinetic bicycles that are already all the rage with the Detroit messengers, sure to catch on nation-wide soon enough.
Or maybe it's just a luge bicycle.

You joke about this, but when I lived near Lake Placid, they had an annual time trial in the summer where you climbed up the luge track then descended down the bobsled track.
Wow that was a fun drop.

and, to clarify, that's basically what we're talking about here. zoobomb in portland takes advantage of a big elevator from the light rail up to the zoo and then bombing down the hill. gravity bikes are popular, as are minibikes.
with the coming beacon hill elevator and light rail stop, we too can experience the drunken hooligannery of bombing down a hill and then getting a free ride back to the top as long as your transfer's valid.

How long is the typical zoobomb route? Looks like the west side of beacon will only be about a mile. Going down the east side of beacon on that road from Thursday's ride, Cheasty, could be more fun at 2.5mi.

precisely the route i was thinking. the typical portland zoobomb routes are 3-4 miles.
there's a light rail stop exactly at the bottom of cheasty, perfectly positioned to take people back to the top for a run down either direction.

Admittedly, the Zoobombs are way cooler. They are a little over 2 miles, there are more routes to go on and more light rail stations to choose from at the bottom. Here are the 3 routes I did with them:
Doing a Tukwila Bomb might be a fun idea at the end of the night. The Tukwila Bomb would've been really cool if Sound Transit had followed through with early on plans to build a light rail station right here.

While we can't ride for free on Thursday, we can the entire weekend. Yippeee!!!

Trains will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Regular service, along with fares, begins Monday, July 20.
Because there is no parking at or around the stations, our best advice is to take a bus, walk or ride your bike (damn hippies). Bicycle parking is available at each station. We’re also encouraging people to park at a transit center and ride a bus into downtown Seattle.

Sound Transit recently released its Light Rail Bicycle Policy (find details below), and announced that bicycles will not be allowed on light rail trains during opening weekend due to the huge crowds that are expected. I ride by a half dozen or so cora racks at SODO station ever day. I'm looking forward to seeing how they fill up.
My last attained pile of bicycles has a small bmx in it, gotta pull it out and see what the deal is.
The linked ST policy document is worth a gander. I think when I first saw it I was impressed that they thought about it.
