sounds about as boring and as uneffective as the ride of silence.
i personally love critical mass in it's current form.
it's our bicycle church.

I have a soft spot for the Ride of Silence because that's how I finally met a handful of you hooligans, but the ride sucked. This ride sounds equally as shitty.
Let's also note that there are plenty of motorists and pedestrians that whoop it up, honk, cheer, and generally ra-ra for CM. It's not all gloom & doom.
Holy water for the next CM ride? :)

Talk about feeling like a dick. I didn't expect the idea to be completely shot down but after thinking about it a bit more it makes sense. I'm not a hand-holding free-hugs kind of guy but I do like to take part in events that bring awareness to bikes and any chance that I get to ride in traffic I'll take, especially on Friday afternoons.
Baring some of the completely stupid shit that goes down at CM it is a good time.

Oh don't feel like a dick, and don't feel like we're attacking you at all. I love bike events as much as the next guy and this is the place to post them. I just feel like this is almost trying to be a protest against CM. The whole holier than thou thing doesn't fly with me. As far as I'm concerned, the stupid shit that goes on at CM is minuscule compared to the stupid shit that drivers do to get cyclists killed on fairly regular basis.

I'd say let's just take it over, but we already have several group rides a week, and I'd rather go get drunk.

Does this imply that you think CM accomplishes something? CM does more to raise blood pressure than it does to raise awareness. If you ride CM, do it because it's fun not because you think it is "raising awareness" or doing your fellow cyclists a favor, it isn't.
The critical Manners ride doesn't sound particularly fun to me and I have no intention of doing it, but calling it "the stupidest, most fucking retarded god damn thing I've ever heard in my whole fucking life" seems a bit of a stretch. It may not do a lot of good, but it's certainly a lot less likely to do harm to people's opinion of cyclists than CM does.

We had 9/11, and now this calls for a 10/12 fry raid on Red Robin; if only cheese-sticks were refilled like the fries are.
10/12: Still haven't forgotten, it's only been a month face stuffing.
A much better way to spend an evening than riding politely.

I think it provides a backdrop of "more radical people" [1] against which other cycling advocacy groups look more reasonable.

I think the CManners ride seems like a very milquetoast sort of thing. Pretty much snooze inducing, but I can't really bring myself to care if other people enjoy it. But the more people on bikes (for pretty much any reason) makes me happy. More people, out for more hours = safer streets for me.
[1] I personally think Critical Mass is pretty innocuous, but some drivers seem to think everyone involved is the devil incarnate.

See, the problem with drivers is that they aren't reasonable. All this bullshit of trying to "raise awareness" and what ever the fuck is never going to accomplish anything. Unless we are riding off the road and being careful to let them do whatever the fuck they want, the average driver will never be happy with the state cyclists on the road; they will ALWAYS be pissed and they will ALWAYS be careless. Getting in their faces and letting them know that we're not going to just back down and (literally) let them roll over us does more for our safety than anything else. I would much rather a driver come up behind me and think 'Shit, a cyclist, those guys are crazy, I'd better give him extra room so he doesn't get pissed at me.' Than to think they can fly past me full speed a foot away with confidence that I'm going to follow whatever their dumb ass thinks the "rules" are.
It's a fucking war for the roads out there and if you think quietly following the rules does any good at all, find one of those people with a "Bring the Troops home" bumper sticker, circa 2003, and ask them how that's going for them.
Maybe I'm a little more radical than most, but whatever.

Speaking of bringing the troops home, maybe you should drop the neocon's a line and ask how the "radical" confrontational approach works.
I'll give you a hint, it doesn't. It just makes things worse. If you interact with cars expecting to find angry assholes that is exactly what you are going to find.
If you really think that it's a war for the roads out there, we are all FUCKED. There are a lot more cars than bikes on the roads and they are a lot bigger than us. Pushing for confrontation is a pretty dumb way to go about it. I'm not saying bend over and take it, but if you don't treat drivers with some respect there is no way they are going to treat you with any.

for all it's ups and downs and wrongs and rights.... one thing that critical mass does well, is make people that are new to biking feel pretty safe
ive brought lots of people to mass that dont bike much, and they liked the fact that they weren't surrounded by big scary autos but by smiling cheering and fun loving people.
of course this can be debated into the ground (these people should stop being babies and learn to cope with traffic, etc)... but all in all, just that alone (more people feeling safe on bikes) is a fact that makes me love CM.
it's a fun, and relatively safe environment for cyclists, seasoned or otherwise.

If I respect cars, it's only out of fear of dying, so why can't respect us out of fear of doing the killing? They don't and they never will, so fuck 'em. I'll follow the rules, I'll wear my helmet, but the fact is that there is literally nothing we can do to keep them from getting pissed. So until we run out of oil on this ruined ball of dirt we all live on, I'm going to be getting in their way cuz shit, the more pissed someone is, the more I know they can see me.

This quoting thing is fun...
Were you on the ride last year that went north on Aurora? I've been riding for a while and the asshole in the F150 sure didn't make me feel safe going across the bridge. There could have been 500 people on bikes and it wouldn't have made us any safer from the goons ripping past us in the left lane of the Aurora bridge.
When CM is downtown doing loops it's a blast, and relatively safe. When the group b-lines for the beer stop near Golden Gardens via 99; not so safe.

see, this is where it gets retarded;
biking in America is not seen as a valid form of transportation. it's the poor mans way to get around. the allusion is that roads were built for cars, when in fact it (as we all know) was just the opposite.
our current society is fixated on the automobile as their identity, their purpose, their gawd given right. its beyond reason. its almost sexual in folks desire and passion. cars get the girls, or the cool boys. Just watch the TV for a few hours or glance thru rags or the paper. the tv adds are the worst!
we are the enemy of this way of life, their way of life. They KNOW its bad, they know its a waste of money, resources, time, ect; but we are instigating change...and humans, as a species resist change. they will resist till the bitter end, even if it means death, theirs or ours.
that may be extreme, but really, why else would someone threaten another person with bodily harm? because they're scared, thats why. scared and embarrassed, ashamed and confused. All they know is that they are supposed to drive. it's like a disease...an addiction. why else would someone do something proven to be hazardous? im not talking about biking here! addiction is near impossible to break...its just lived with through constant mediation and intervention. sure, you can keep an alcoholic away from booze easily enough, but keep a civilization away from their car? fuck...good luck with that one!
folks have fears of the stupidest things...flying, lightning, spiders...you see my point. but the reality is their car will likely be their death...and they hate us for finding a way to save money, have fun, stay healthy and build a community. and because of this we will not change anyones mind any time soon. the best we can do is lay the foundation for the future when cars are a nuisance, not a requirement.
oh, did i mention theyre also scared of looking at others/themselves in squid uniforms? i rest my case!

While I agree that biking is not seen as a valid form of transportation, I think we have to keep in mind that most drivers aren't out to hit us. They want to get home, or meet their family at the nearest Claimjumpers. They see cars as the easiest way to accomplish that. They get reaffirmation from everyone else out on the road. Personally, I think we have to worry about the escalation in the sense of entitlement and having to be the biggest, baddest, fastest SOB on the road. This leads to dangerous driving and bikers lying on asphalt. Well, that and the stupid j-holes with phones in one hand and their McBurger in the other.

I really don't like the "high tech" 50 types of steel Henkel uses in each knife. they don't hold an edge and well are just prone to breaking. seriously back in my chefin' days my mum bought me my first set of real knives. they were henkles and the 8" chef knife lasted about a year when the edge alloy separated from the spine. my wusthof grand prix's are almost 10 years old and have never done me wrong. and they'll hold an edge for ages unless I do some serious carving with them. I don't think I've ever taken my paring knife to a stone. I do have to say, I HATE the new handles on the grand prix 2 line...

You guys missed out. There were four of us to begin the ride. We picked up a couple people here and there. Did three or four loops around town, taking lanes.
Then the exciting part began. We ran into all these crazy bitches that thought we were progressive. They all gave it up! Girls Gone Wild BC style... Bought us a bunch of beer and sent us on our respecitve ways home. All-in-all a good night.
Next month Second Friday (or whatever it's called) will ride again. Screw the Manners, we just like to ride bikes. The Girls Gone Wild like it too.
