so my very good friends The Degenerate Art Ensemble are doing another production of the Cuckoo Crow in about a month. I need to rebuild some of the stage props that I had done but didn't make it into storage because, well, they were just too damn big.
basically I need to make two of these
and... I could use help, as I was a little drunk last night by the time we got to talking about when I could have them ready.
so anybody wanna hang out drink beer and build some giant eggs?

If you can get your hands on a copy of Cranked Magazine Anniversary Issue there is a story it it by Charles of Wright Bros. Cycles about wheel building with step by step instructions and pictures. Of course if you are like me it is easier to learn if someone shows you how and Charles does teach a wheel building class that is very good.
I had a lot of fun when I took Charles' course and was very happy to see the step by step instructions in Cranked Magazine. The next time I want to build a set of wheels I might be able to do it without adult supervision.

I had a lot of luck just reading jobst brandt's "the bicycle wheel". I built my first set literally by-the-book, and I ride them every day. they are probably going on like 6 months with very minimal truing. read the book front to back first, then go and follow the instructions when you actually build the wheels.
also, wright bros seem to be a big proponent of using loctite on spokes, which I thought sounded excessive and that's been echo'd by other wrenches I've talked to since. I use linseed oil cause i'm too cheap to by spoke prep.

thirded on the deceptive ease of learning to build wheels. I learned by following Jobst Brandt, and Nygaard. He walked me through very efficiently and informatively. I'm still riding the wheel ( rear 105 9spd hub to Salsa Delgado rim, dub butted black Phil spokes & nipps) many thousands miles later and it just got it's first trueing recently. Linseed oil FTW!

I agree the use of loctite on spokes maybe excessive and Charles' personal choice which he of course teachs in his wheel buliding classes.
As for Jobst Brandt's book "the bicycle wheel", I found it to be too technical!

Yeah I was really referring to the fact that many .83ers know how to build wheels, I wasn't looking for a million people telling me about crap that I already knew I could buy. Thanks jerks, now everyone thinks I hijacked this thread.
