hey hackers, nerds, and other ridiculous types that dominate this group. phpbb has grown long in the tooth and is making our hosting provider send derrick angry flaming bags of e-poop.
many of you know that for a while now (oh, 6 months or so) we've been "working" on a new forum based on bbpress rather than phpbb. i'm happy to say that it's not quite ready yet but definitely ready for some heavy testing before we probably move to it permanently along with a new hosting provider in the new week or so.
i'd love it if you testery/nerd types could go hit up: http://point83.com/bb/ and let me know what things you find wrong with it. we have a migration script that in theory should have moved over all of the posts, users, etc. but i'm sure it's got glitches and you can help me find out what they are.
also appreciated would be any help tweaking and fixing the templates and other gui bits, we've done some work to make it look kosher and as similar to the current format as possible but it's got a bunch of new features and hopefully we can even improve the functionality.
REMEMBER: the new forum is in a testing phase right now. with your guys' feedback i'll be tweaking the import script and blowing away any of your changes by reimporting over them. the phpbb forum will stay online for at least a while longer.
if you want to provide direct programming help or have any suggestions for other plugins or features you want, let me know!

Well, here's what I dun seen so far:
(using Exploder - I'm at work)
All the forums seem to have merged into an unholy mass. The forum listing below only lists the photo forum.
Every other post is highlighted in pink(!).
Stickies do not seem to be sticking.
In the forum posts themselves, the quoting formatting isn't working and other formatting in general seems to be either gone or gravely amiss.
On the plus side, it looks like the data carried across fine.

When you have the ignorer on, it seems that any thread the ignored users have posted to is invisible. I call that a bug. Just block their posts, please.

There should be a link to the forum list, and a way to see the contents of each forum individually.

I dunno, I thought it was interesting.
As in, "Interesting, the new forum looks like something that got squeezed out of a cat's anus. Huh."

In no particular order...
The forum index in the new forum doesn't provide an easy to way to jump to the last page of a thread. I don't know what phpBB is capable of, but if it would auto jump to the last message I viewed that would be great. At the very least I'd like to see a few page numbers and maybe the word "last". A word gives a larger link target for those nerds using iPhones.
Also, there are too many caps, I don't need the forum to yell at me how long ago a post was made.
I don't really know why I would care to view topics with no replies or no tags.
The bold of "blah wrote" is not that recognizable with the other light text. Make it stand out or make the quotes block indented perhaps?
Also, make an iCal feed I can subscribe to for all the .83 events.

wierd ... this seems to vary. I get all the forums, and then reload and get just the photo forum ... but it's random.

what version of IE are you using?
i'm not seeing the pink in firefox.
stickieness isn't being imported, but the functionality seems to work.
i fixed the quoting formatting but i'm not sure what to do with some of the other screwy formatting. do you have some specific examples i can look at?

As far as I can tell, italics, bold, etc aren't showing up as well as any text color. I haven't looked to see if img tags are working.

last page link added. i'm not sure how to get the page numbers in there, and i'm really not sure without looking further how to get the state for the last viewed message in each thread or pull out pagination data.
i'm not sure how to style the post footer. opinions? mockups? i think we really need it to float to the lower right of the container it's in as well before it drives me batshit insane. any css gurus want to tackle that one?
i agree that the views link is pretty useless. removed.
the calendar events feed is actually something that this will break, meaning we actually need to get a decent little calendar script. maybe we could make a plugin that builds/manages google calendar objects and ties them to forum threads?

just wallpaper, but i had a crazy idea of making a zelda game where the whole map is loaded all the time and enemies respawn over time. you'd be small but it'd look pretty cool on big monitors, wouldn't it?

for users that have avatars in the new system, the avatar is showing up first, then the name below that.

OK, I'm home and I don't have to deal with Microsoft's abortion of a browser anymore. In Firefox it doesn't look like cat turds anymore.
Something the cat pooped on, perhaps but at least there's a theoretical path visible to less suckage.

flipped. let me know when you're done eating your corndog split. (like a banana split but instead it's a corndog with scoops of refried beans drizzled in nacho cheese sauce.)
anyhow, it's alot nicer to work with than phpbb, that's for damn sure, but there are a few tricky bits. the stylesheet you want to change is in /my-templates/point83/style.css

face it, there's a lot of work to be done on the interface.
first, the tag cloud has GOT to go. it's absurd and I highly doubt anyone will use it (we're not dealing with a huge corpus that needs sifting -- plus, I don't trust about 1/2 of .83 to tag adequately.)
there's no way "back."
interface elements aren't distinct nor consistent (link color, emphasis, etc are all the same color, -- for instance, the location navigator `[westlake center >> <post title>]` needs to be clickable, all the same style)
dividing line between poster and post left-to-right, like a border-left:1px solid black; on the main post category. I assume derrick is going to step in and make this pretty and possibly usable.
otherwise, I'm excited about a new platform and RSS feeds.
