My friend had her apartment burglarized twice in two weeks. Each time it took the police more than 3 hours to respond. She was forced to wait in her apartment that had been broken into (once with a glass door that had been smashed) without touching anything to preserve any possible fingerprints, while the police took their time to respond.

I had the same thing happen, but the cop didn't even bother fingerprinting and pretty much told me there was nothing they could do. the big secret is the SPD is understaffed, and there's enough "real" (read: violent, real-time) crime to keep most of them busy. that's why it takes 3 hours to get someone to a bugurlary scene and why hardly anyone gets tickets (cyclists or drivers) for traffic infractions in the city.

what can you do? complain. a friend of mine had a cop tell them exactly that when he bitched about their response time. the cop said "complain to the department. the more they hear about it, the more likely they are to fix it."

I'm not exactly what I would call anti-establishment, but I'm surprised that there are people on this forum rallying for more cops. I will gladly exchange a 3 hour response time if I get robbed for NOT having police write me a ticket if I (safely) run a red or happen to not have my helmet on. You don't want bored police officers running around.

having gone to highschool in a town (Mukilteo) with over funded and underworked police, I can attest to this.
I was regularlly pulled over in highschool for biking on the shoulder, being out "too late on a school night" (coming home from pizza job at 1am + hs parking permit on the rear view mirror = traffic stop) and for "tresspassing" at the beach after hours.
