yeah yeah, an article on cars....
i LOVE bio diesel/electric (especially greasel) technology and alternative autos that can get massive amounts of mileage on little fuel. this article is right up that alley.
It's not that Detroit CAN'T produce cleaner cars, it's that they have contracts and agreements with the oil industry not to.

I was actually building a still with friends so I could convert my Le Car to run on alcohol (it had a suitably high compression ratio for alcohol) but then its engine exploded. We were going to put the still to use for other purposes, but got bored with the project.
The turbine idea is pretty cool - and duh - it makes a lot more sense than a gasoline piston engine hybrid does, as considers weight, mechanical complexity, and fuel choices.
Auto manufacturers will never make an investment in safety or the environment for the sake of safety or the environment - they'll only make an investment in anything if it will get them money. (which is why fuel injection which had been around since the 1890s didn't catch on until the 1970s, and the industry had to be forced by the government to make real bumpers, implement collapsible steering columns etc. in 1968 - and Ford made thousands of Pintos into death traps by placing a design they knew was faulty into production - even when it would have cost just a couple of dollars to make a change to the design that would have made it far less deadly)
I could start talking about the oil industry, but then I'd sound like a conspiracy theorist (discussion on the Pogue carburetor and the Canadian stock market crash anyone?)
