In addition to the recent BB shooting, it seems there was another recent attempt to show those crazy cyclists who is boss.

has anyone heard anything about this one?

(via the north seattle herald-outlook)

-----
GUNSHOT

A bicyclist was shot in the 4100 block of Wallingford Avenue North at 6:55 p.m. on Oct. 21.

The bicyclist told police she was riding in the curb-parking lane, away from vehicular traffic when a car approached behind her. She then heard a gunshot and felt something hit the back of her left shoulder. The car sped away, going about 50 to 55 mph, she said.

The woman said she didn't see a weapon, but she could smell gunpowder. Also, a passenger-side window was open.

Wearing multiple layers of clothing, the woman only sustained a tear-shaped bruise.
----

(also be sure to check out the not one, but two mushroom-related reports in the most recent batch.)

I find that mainlining Triflow has the same effect.

Sounds a lot like the same perp as over on Delridge - BB packed .22 pistol or something similar. Who knows, it might not even be bikers that are a particular target - they might be going after anything convenient and unable to shoot back.

This should be an interesting Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board meeting:

This wednesday, 6-8pm at city hall, room L280.

BMP vote
Cyclist shooting in Delridge
Cyclist shooting on Wallingford
Memorial ride
Multiple driver hostilities toward cyclists on in Fremont/Wallingford

A friend suggested just that thing as a self-policing system for drivers. Issue everyone 3 specially colored paintballs a month and fine anyone who's car was tagged more than 3 times in a month.

I like this self policing idea. But paint isnt going to cut it. Look for the car with 15-20 bullet holes in it. That will be the fucker that shot at me.

If I ever get shot, I'm going to read Watchmen again, watch Boondock Saints and start dispensing my own brand of bike-mounted vigilante justice.

Write the plate down immediately afterwards! Easy to confuse a digit/letter when you're all hyped up angry.

when i got hit this spring the first thing i did was yell out the license plate number as loud as i could, hoping that even if i forgot it a witness would hear it and see the vehicle that hit me.

Or if your mobile phone has a voice memo option just use that and babble away. Or, call yourself or a voice mail box while repeating the digits/letters over and over. Or, get a cheap little voice recorder device that you can strap to your handlebars and then you can hit the button and yell a plate into it when the need arises. Rambling vocally may also help mention things about the type of car, etc.

Seriously, the best thing you can do is to get a plate and car description. After than try to remember what the person looked like if you saw them. If you call the cops immediately indicate what direction the car was heading or where they turned.
U-locks, paintballs, airsoft, rocks, real guns....I understand the emotion but I don't believe it will do anything to remeidy your situation or that of other cyclists.

So far it seems to break down into 2 catagories: "Random" and "road rage." The Shootings falling under the former and the Agro Fremont SUV driver the latter.

In the "random" events cyclists may have been targeted but I bet they were the most accessible, vulnerable targets. (think of Santa and his cap gun, firing a blank in the face of the guy waiting for the bus, derrick, or the guys driving around shooting people with a paintball gun). Cyclists are a tactical disadvantage to protect themselves if targeted from behind by an approaching car, especially with a passenger doing the shooting or throwing. Directly attacking the car back just seems to open the door for more blatenet targeting of cyclists. Best to try to get the description and report it to the police.

"Road rage" events usually have a bit more notice, and a driver may continue to harrass a bike for whatever reason, in this case look for the plate# and car description sooner than later. Pulling over or keep riding is up to you, but again a direct retaliation may just lead to escalation and one less safe driver that the rest of the cyclists have to deal with.

It's honestly really fucking hard. The more of a psycho the driver is, the more our own persoanl anger makes us think less clearly. I said the plate name to myself twice of the guy who ran me into the curb last wednesday... but by the time I spit in his face I had forgotten it... and I was fucking kicking myself as it was flat out vehicular assault...christ...attempted murder.. and it wasn't worth the trade off to see a loogie go smack in his eye... I mean...it was really cool to peg him in the eye... but it wasn't worth it when I realized I had forgotten the plate... so...yeah... stupid revenge aggression can get the better of us... and do us no favors. Getting video is the only real solution. Pass the video to a cop and they will move on it. Things are getting too nasty out there to do vent on them... as much as we should shoot them... it will do us no good in the public eye.

Derrick... can those video cameras take a plate? Are they that accurate?

I live in N. Seattle and a couple of years ago my wife got mugged 4 blocks from our house in the early morning on the way to work. She got the license number of the car and description of the car & perps. The car was not stolen--it belonged to some one in Lynnwood. When questioned, this person merely claimed he had loaned it out and couldn't remember to whom.

End of story as far as SPD was concerned.

Folks, you've got to watch out for yourselves out there, because SPD couldn't be bothered.

I would record the license and description as that is obviously more prudent than ignoring them. However, realize that even that may not be enough.

On foot, situational awareness is the best way to avoid being a victim. Cycling demands so much attention and has intrinsic blind/vulnerable spots--adding significantly to the challenge.

Sketchy may be on to something, but any one that would go that route should check out some of our local training outfits like Insights or FAS before making additions to their every day carry items...

20+ years of bike commuting and i'll never be a few inches away from a weapon. fuck that, the "enemy" already has theirs locked and loaded!

I could totally just put some straps on the side o' the ol' Ortlieb to hold a lousiville slugger. I'd probably never even use it, but it would definitely make people think twice. I once saw a polo player riding through downtown with a mallet on his shoulder. Taking up the whole middle lane, passing anyone and everyone at will in rush hour traffic and no one so much as looked at him.

it kind of made me want to take up polo.

I always have a knife handy as well. As I mentioned in my previous post, you can't count on any one else to help you when you find yourself victimized. You most effective tool is using yuor brain to reduce the likelihood of being that victim. Beyond that it is a matter of personal choice. Personlly, I would choose to go home to my family at the end of the day. It isn't very politically correct here in Seattle to acknowledge it, but judicious use of certain tools can increase your chances of surviving a violent encounter once it comes to that.

However I must say that none of the classes I've taken have addressed the unique scenerio of having to defend yourself as a bicyclist from a perpetrator in a car or using a car as their weapon. Frankly if I were in Death Match 2007 (tm) and I got to pick between an SUV and a pistol caliber firearm, I'd go with the Escalade.

Joking aside, I'm really bummed about this emerging anti-bicyclist trend and I really can only see things getting worse as economic pressures add both to the ranks of (enlightened) cyclists as well as frustrated, angry, cash-strapped drivers.

The question is what do we do about it? Having a place to keep track of what's going on is a good start.

Hmm, I wonder if it would be worth you chatting with the dude that was shot in Delridge to see if any of the details click...if it was BBs again maybe it is the same perp. ...or at least filing an incident report with the police even if it is horribly light on the details.

Years ago, there used to be a guy that rode his bike around downtown with a full sized Scottish claymore strapped to his back. A terrible, impractical weapon but everyone gave him a lot of room. I think the reasoning was that anyone nutty enough to lug 5 feet of sharp steel on their back was probably a tad unbalanced.

Drunkan: duly noted!

"This is the Ultimate Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). M249 is a replica of the heavy machine gun used by U.S. special force troops in real combat to supply heavy firing. It is equipped with a super capacity box magazine and is commonly used to secure an area or to provide serious heavy firing in Airsoft combats.

The A&K M249 is full metal with built in bipod and redesigned 8mm gearbox and hop-up chamber. It is an out of the box ready to go heavy firing support machine gun! The TOP, CA and other M249 normally costs from $600 ~ $1000 without the box magazine!

Full metal construction for those that wants a M249 as real as it gets!"
