Seattle City Council
Councilmember Jan Drago

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 5, 2007

Council Passes Seattle Bicycle Master Plan
Councilmember Drago sponsors ten-year-plan to increase bicycling and
improve bicyclists* safety

SEATTLE - The Council, today, unanimously passed the Seattle Bicycle
Master Plan in order to increase bicycling and improve bicyclists*
safety in the City. The Bicycle Master Plan was an 18-month
collaboration between the City and a Citizen*s Advisory Board that
included representatives from the Cascade Bicycle Club, the Bicycle
Alliance of Washington, and many more. Councilmember Jan Drago, Chair of
the Transportation Committee, said, *Bicycling has great benefits for
personal, public, and global health. It is a form of transportation that
the City must support and make safer and easier to do.*

The Bicycle Master Plan is a policy that plans to increase the number
of bicyclists that bike to work daily from the current 6,000 to 18,000.
The Bicycle Master Plan identified the locations and recommendations for
a 450-mile bicycle system that includes bike lanes, shared land
markings, bicycle boulevards, signed local street connections, and
multi-use trails. The Plan also includes developing a bicycle education,
enforcement and encouragement program and securing funding to implement
the infrastructure improvements. All of this should help increase the
safety of bicyclists and reduce the rate of bike crashes by one third
between 2007 and 2017.

Bridging the Gap, a voter-approved levy passed in November 2006,
provides $10 million a year to implement recommendations in the Bicycle
Master Plan over the next nine years. Councilmember Drago said, *The
generosity of Seattle voters will help us realize the goal of a City
where bicycling is an accessible and safe form of transportation.*

For now, at least the politicians have won.

It is a pretty hefty chunk of change and a plan that leaves a lot of flexibility. The council is pretty much relying on the Bicycle Advisory Board to monitor the progress and keep it on track.

I am optimistic, but I am frequently optimistic, that this will be a good thing for cyclists. I have my concerns when I see the mess that Stone Way is right now, but I also heard the head of SDOT say that if the traffic levels that were predicted aren't seen in the next two months that they will put the road diet in place south of 40th. So, I still have hope that we won't be just painting a bunch of bike lanes in places that are death boxes waiting to happen.

I just got interviewed by channel 5 (KONG?) outside the Starbucks on Dexter. I just happened to be walking by and the cameraman asked me if I knew anything about the master plan. Hopefully I didn't screw anything up.

Not a chance. That is a state built and owned bridge. The city doesn't do anything other than operate and *maybe* maintain it.

sdot seems to think otherwise.

it's kind of odd though that sdot "owns" the university, fremont, and ballard bridges, while wsdot owns montlake, the ship canal, and aurora.

Hmm, I could have sworn that ... well, folks from SDOT had told me that WA State owned it and that was why they couldn't fix the bicycle problems ... I'll bring that one up next time I get a chance to talk to a SDOT person.

Thanks for the update Michael.

The Master Plan is flawed but at least it's a done deal and better than nothing. Half of the fight has nothing to do with the details of the bike infrastructure but simply the legitimacy of the master plan and how it influences future transportation development.

Just got this from Cascade - someone call in and support Dave and tell all those other boneheads to stick it.

As an active supporter of bicycling, you know how important public opinion is when it comes to securing pro-bike funding and insuring justice for us two-wheeled users of the road.

Our very own David Hiller will be a guest on KIRO radio AM 710 TODAY at 1:00PM to discuss the Bicycle Master Plan. He's likely to face an unsympathetic host, so we need to show the listeners of KIRO how Seattle really feels about bikes!

Tune in to KIRO 710 today around 1:00, and be ready to call in with your supportive comments:

Thanks for laying that down first ben. I had to listen this D-bag all day when I worked at TNF downtown because the back room liked it. Ugh!

Then I am sure Dave is having fun. I think Lee referred to Dave as a pitbull on Saturday ... and everyone knows pit bulls trump fucking idiots.

David Hiller does the job he does because he is razor sharp and unafraid to compeletly destroy people over their flawed misconceptions and beliefs. Local bike-hero for sure.
