Iunno, maybe it was because I went to the other one (on pike, not on 12th), maybe it's because I just ordered a latte and not a mocha, and maybe it's because I'm a girl and I batted my eyelashes, but I was impressed with my coffee at Stumptown - it had a fucking latte foam heart on it. I know, real tough, but it impressed me, and it was tasty. I also liked the decor. The surly Portland boys behind the counter weren't so great, but I wouldn't say it was a negative coffee experience.
As my half-assed-planned trip to Portland this weekend has fallen through, I think it's safe to say I'll be out on this ride.

I wondering why everyone is assuming that stumptown relocated baristas to seattle...
it's a fucking minimum wage job and shitty baristas are a dime a dozen in this town.
also kat, portland folk tend to not be surly, thats more a seattle trait.

oh no, I know they didn't transplant baristas up here, but they just think they're hot shit, like they can just roll up here and automatically be the hippest place around, just because they tossed a record player and some wood cabinet speakers in the joint. Bauhaus has been high on the throne, king hip of coffee mountain for a while now and it's going to take more than some Portland cred to knock it down.
A heart Kat? Don't make me laugh! The other day the guy at bauhaus made me a mocha with a Rosetta on the top that was so good it literally lasted all the way to the bottom of the cup. I'm pretty certain it burned an image into the porcelain of the mug, it was that powerful.

While I'm sorry it did... I'm super stoked you'll be riding tomorrow! Wanna meet up before the ride for some kickin it?
And anyone else too. Let's do an early dinner/prefunk thingy. Time and place ideas?
I am definitely up for some preride funk/dinner. I plan to come on over for some miles up the BGT, maybe back down the I-90 trail early in the morning. Call me noon or so whomever organises (i.e. makes a decision with respect to?) the prefunk: thr#ee si^x ze)ro t@wo e*ight s^ix e*ight fi%ve $four n(ine ?
P.S. Who cares about the hearts and flowers. The former-Briton in me says show me what you can do with tea.

You two STFU&R. You can compete for DFL. It will be such a blast. You don't have to be in it to be number one, or even number ten. It's just so awesome when you get to the finish and you're second to last... (Me on 7 Hills.) You can still feel wonderfully accomplished. You'll have riddin all over the hill, eaten cupcakes and done something good for little brown children on another continent.
Suck it up and ride!!! Please?
BTW, Teressaj. I've been trying to figure out why your name trips me out so much. I used to have a roommate. TJ. Tiressa J. Weird.
Duncan, Matthew (others). I'll post prefunk place in the morning after some thinking... You guys ever eaten at Flowers on the Ave? Then again their booze probably isn't cheap.
Got flasks?

Okay! Official prefunk of Bikes to Rwanda, Stumptown Alley Cat 2007 is the Elysian, 3pm.
Be there, or be something not round enough to be mobile.

Hey, let's say 2:30, because an hour and 20 minutes might not be enough time to eat food, drink beer, and settle up our debts, while still making it to the start with enough time to spare. Yes?

well. that kicked my ass.
Cold sober, I left downtown without completing two of the checkpoints. Riding out of Madrona (after going to far down Madison, all the way to the Bush School) was new, and horrible. Having the power out for most of Capitol Hill helped none. Cupcakes, pork and tasty stout on tap definitely saved the day.
of note:
going in circles near Group Health looking for East Olive
forgetting to go to Queen Anne/ Counterbalance before going to Eastlake & Furhman
overshooting MLK while flying down Madison in the pitch black, and nearly getting doored at 40mph.
heading back to E. Olive Way in time to catch the checkpoint guys for their final swigs of Jagermeister

Oh, and I'd like to add my public apologies to Matthew for giving directions but neglecting to provide the information that he should eventually turn... twice... and then proceed to his destination; I owe him cupcakes.

Fawkin' sweet.
Highlights:
-Bombing Madison.
-Seeing the poor suckers who went to Eastlake before Counter Balance.
-Watching Ben take a corner with an unbelievable two wheel drift around an angry SUV.
-Curb snake eating my front wheel in the inky blackness of the night. The replay of the word "ow!" five times while some girl ran across the street and said, "Man, you crazy!"
-Jess at Stumptown for patching me up after the race. Thank you!
-The porter. Damn that was good.
oh. man. that was fucking insane. highlights:
-no stoplights along eastlake. effing brilliant.
-large number of red lights run, like a fucking dumbass. lucky i didn't get killed.
-nearly going all the way to fucking BALLARD for the cupcake stop (trusting Aden's directional sense, not a good idea), then deciding it was not worth heading all the way to the CD/Madrona just for a cupcake.
-excellent party, too many portlandiers and non-bikey folk, especially as it was winding down. good beer though, and good company for the most part.
-non-rubber-side-down issue at the top of the hill coming out of the parking lot. lost phone and watch, simultaneously or in close succession. now i have no means of telling time!
all in all, though, a good time. didn't need the pilsner, the jaeger shot, or the rainier, but i did 'em anyway...

My highlight of the night was hitting a roundabout at full speed somewhere over on Boyer. With the lights out, I was blinded by some utility truck. Suddenly a yellow diamond pops out of the darkness and i'm flying through the air, clearing the entire roundabout.
I'm fine, nothing more than a bruise to the hip, but now it's time to bend my rim back into place.
Great race all, and thanks Mike (don't know if you read the forums) for the company on the ride, even if we did fuck up so many turns.

Fucking awesome race. The organizers kind of get on my nerves but they definitely made up for it with all the free booze. Here's some highlights for me:
-Tearing full speed through the brick in front of the marketplace yelling "Bicycles!"
-Hauling ten pounds of ass down Mercer in between two lanes of deadlocked traffic.
-Barely missing the asshole that Koos nailed and just yelling "go go go!" as he yelled and we took off into the dark.
-getting way lost looking for the cupcake place, but then figuring it out because we had a woman (gretch) in our group and she stopped someone to ask for directions.
-beer, cupcake, beer, jager, coffee, whisky, beer
Seriously guys, super great time. Let's organize more of these things ourselves.
I feel that the fact that I just rolled out of bed at 4pm, is a fairly good description of how much fun I had last nite. As this was my first Alleycat (am I to include Messquerade?) I couldn't have asked for a more radical time!! I'm glad we had a pretty steadfast group for the majority of the ride- I bet we could have been pretty high up in the rankings if we had asked for directions sooner though- fucking cupcakes. I think Seven made a great point about organizing one ourselves, and maybe it can somehow include neon paint and Shetland Ponies....
Kos- how is your hand? I think it deserves to be immortalized in the forums via photo. It was a damn good shiner!

Ever since Pete and Derrick road into that one grocery store, I've wanted to have an "indoor" Alley Cat, where all of the check points were actually inside places and you had to arrive on your bike. Like in Fred Meyer, QFC, safeway, and other big stores with automatic doors.

holy shit that was fucking sweet. i loved eastlake and madrona without power. I managed to squeak in a minute behind Ben for 4th.
let's see, my $10 got me:
t-shirt
spoke card
free coffee coupon
pint of beer at elysian
cupcake
16 oz. of Vitamin R
1 cup of stumptown coffee
1 shot of jager
pint after pint after pint of elysian porter.
i'm trying to think of another time $10 got me so much.
and yeah, Koos, let us know how the hand turns out. that was, umm, gross.

oh believe you me i've been tossing this one around for about a year now.
the best part is that the checkpoints would all end up being things like "by the eggs" or "by the hoses".
problem is i am pretty sure this would be a ten-man race tops.

so has anyone deciphered how exactly the t-shirts are related to the race? Cafe Grail? Projectile vomit-wolves? It's cute and all, it just smacks of leftovers from another event.

I have no idea about the t-shirt; agreed, but:

I think they were actually for this event, but it was just terribly poor organizing. I saw three different flyers for this event, all of which called the race something entirely different. One of them called it "Cafe Grail" and had the same design that's on the shirt.

That was hella fun. My hand's swelling has gone down a lot, just a big ol' bruise. FieryIery showed me how to massage teh fluids out... I hope my pedal gouged that fuckers car, that will teach him to use a blinker and not brake check bikes.
Well that was fun and informative. Chris was a good partner for running around town and a good foil for my whims. Not DFL; woo!
DFL! I win!
Ironically (and there's a lot of irony to my ride Saturday night), I probably had one of the fastest average speeds. I did 21.4 mph over 63.8 miles. Why sixty three miles? Because I tried every 34th avenue in Seattle, all to no cupcake avail. I even knocked on some residence off Madison Ave thinking Cupcake Royale was a home business maybe.
Fortunately, Gretch hooked me up at the finish line with a cupcake (c.f. surlykat's flickr pic). I was happier than Paolo Bettini winning the World Championships after doping for a year and getting away with it...
Also, for Derrick: 2:58:56. 170 bpm avg, 207 bpm max (going up Yesler Way in a 53 tooth ring, excited for cupcakes), 2605 calories burnt, which is 3.76 8 oz cupcakes with frosting. Oh it was a great ride!

Both Linda's and Elysian Fields gave me a glass of coke. I didn't get the pint, because I finally got back into Capital Hill at around 8pm or so, so three of the checkpoints weren't even open. One of them was the Pint.

I suspect another case of the CD confusion: East of the freeway between Denny and Yesler, Avenues have no directional designation, Streets do (East).
Cupcake Royale in Madrona is on 34th Ave, between E Spring and E Union.
It took me years before I noticed the north section of town (around Seattle Center) has a similar rule: Avenues have a directional designation (North), but the Streets do not. E.g., the corner of 5th Ave N and Mercer St.
