Idea: Keep a log of the license plate number of drivers who put you at risk. Use this handy website (thanks Kevin) to invite them to your next party.
I'll start:
A44305Z White cargo van, 1980's vintage american
7:45AM 11/6/07 1st Ave S. near the Outdoor Research company store.
I was riding south in the right hand traffic lane, right of center. This van passed me without leaving the lane, its mirror missing me by less than 4 inches.
I followed the van into the Home Depot parking lot and approached the driver, who was walking towards the store at that point. I let him know he nearly hit me; he turned away and kept walking.
A44305Z, here's looking at you.

Personally, i would recommend pissing down the ventilation intakes at the top of the hood as being far more insidious and expensive to fix.

I thought about it on the rest of the ride. Valve core tool was buried in my bag... think I'll put it on my keyring.

anyone have the online utility bookmarked that lets you reverse-search by license plate # ? I have it at home, it would be helpfully to have on this thread.

I hate how I simmer after those interactions, it's hard to shrug off and for the offender it is no big deal. White Van Man causes lots of trouble in the UK.

Busting the license plate light is a sure way to get someone pulled over next time they drive in the dark (anytime after 4pmthese days!). This is especially true of utility vans, which are sketch to begin with. The best part? They will have no idea anything happened until they see the flashing light in the rearview.

I believe the Seattle Municipal Court Public Information Vehicle Search form is the best you can do without being a cop. Alas, it only works if the vehicle has an infraction, and you'll only get the name/address of the driver if they contest the charge in court.
I wish more bad drivers would fight parking tickets.

that would be specfuckingtactular!
sure its illegal, but what fun he would have 'splaing that to a cop.

denny, thank mr Ron Swartz next time you see him for putting you at risk. He just got popped for speeding in July, you'd think he'd slow his roll.

Car: 1995 Jeep Wrangler, Green, 2 door
License Plate: 142 TMQ
Driver: David Keyongs Dunning (Asian Male)
Activity: Rear ended cyclist (probably more but that's all I witnessed)
Driver has multiple violations including driving without insurance, expired tags over two months old, parking tickets, etc.
Passed me too close, with no shoulder, so I knocked on his door as he went by.
He swerved right into the curb and checked me with his fender.
I have to get back into Seattle to file a report. The SPD operator said "yeah, that's assault". Douchebag is going down.

So were you just Quickdraw McGraw with the camera, or did you catch up to him at a light? Either way, I'm impressed that you were levelheaded enough to snap a good photo!

This all happened just as we were approaching stopped traffic at a red light. Smart guy, got 10 feet ahead in life.
After a short conversation ("Have a little respect!" / "Get off the road!"), I got back behind his truck & took this photo.

For the record, I'm curious how this plays out. This happened to Scott and I once; all we got from the police were tickets for not wearing helmets.

Yeah, so far, not so good.
I really should have called 911, instead of waiting until I got to work to call the non-emergency line. I was so caught up in survival mode, that it took me a while to realize that he intentionally hit me, and I might have something to go on.
The woman on the non-emergency line said they'd have to send an officer, but couldn't send one to Kent... I stopped by the West precinct that night, and the officer behind the glass was very unhelpful. "You rode your bike to Kent?? (body language: are you homeless / crazy?)
"How do you know he meant to hit you? You can't prove that. That's just bad driving, a traffic infraction."
"We won't go looking for him now, because we can't prove it was him driving the vehicle."
"Here's a form, send it to the state patrol."
Awesome. Next time, follow Joby's list.

Scott and I called 911, too, and we got pretty much the same treatment from the cops. 911 was helpful, but the officers were not. really disappointing.

Yeah I really liked the no-helmet ticket that was mailed to me two weeks later by that fucking dick cop. That was special.
