Darkest (lowest maximum monthly sunshine amount) 101 cities in US:
http://www.city-data.com/top2/c470.html

1. Bellingham, WA (housing, pop. 75,150): 48.8%

2. Everett, WA (housing, pop. 98,514): 50.4%

3. Shoreline, WA (housing, pop. 52,315): 50.5%

4. Seattle, WA (housing, pop. 582,454): 51.2%

5. East Seattle, WA (housing, pop. 480,100): 52.4%

Also, we don't even make the top 101 for most average rainfall.

East Seattle, WA, pop 480,000, huh? How did they manage to hide the second largest city in the state under our noses?

Edit: And what about Anchorage?

Wow yeah, who knew there was a whole city to the east of us?

As for Anchorage, I present a hypothesis: They might receive enough 24 sunshine during the summer months to make up for the winter. The mountains and rain of the pacnw may also contribute to this recipe for epidemic amount of SAD.

on extremely old (think circa 1909, etc) maps of Seattle, Mercer Island is labelled "East Seattle".

the things you find out in the UW map room on dates...

also? the area around Discovery Park was slated to be filled in and turned into an industrial park. the streets were already platted and everything. it was ick.

To answer my own question, I note that they category is 'lowest maximum monthly sunshine'. I'm sure Anchorage's maximum monthly sunshine (in June or July) kicks ass over most other cities'.

What this stat seems to be telling us is that even on the sunniest month (around here, probably July), the amount of sunshine we get is pretty damn low, comparatively. So this is more of a comparison of summers than falls/winters.

Tortilla Flats just N. of Discovery Park is one of the more dangerous hazards to navigation around here. The channel is relatively well marked, but people cut the channel all the time and I have seen more than one boat run aground there on low tide.

But Mercer Island doesn't have 400K people.

By the way, those areas around Discovery Park are now a Seattle City Park.
