I would also like to add that apparently I've been living in Ballard too long. Somewhere in Lower Queen Anne on the 18 I went from snoozing to just zonked out, and some random guy on the bus woke me up in Ballard saying "this looks like your stop, is it?"

I would also like to thank the brave service men and women of WW2 for giving the world americanos, so I could have a yummy triple this morning.

Before .84 split off, but when it was apparent we weren't going to the airport via any rational route, I was joking with Henry about how maybe we were going to another airport to meet Brandon. Boeing Field? Renton? Henry brought up the now-defunct Issaquah Airport.

Well, we just missed Boeing Field and Renton (although I didn't miss that one), and, out of curiosity, I followed where Highway 900 (MLK) goes after it leaves Renton, and, lo and behold, it becomes the Renton-Issaquah Road and ends at the site of the former Issaquah Airport.

True, but the I'd suggest 1st instead of 4th. The 2' high guardrails on the northbound side of the bridge over the railroad tracks give me the heebie-jeebies too.

Almost Live characters included.

trevor: what's "teh lame" is taking a completely shit-tacular route that ends up with tons of unsafe riding (and clearly we all can't handle ourselves anymore) in order to try and fuck up the plans of some people who don't particularly want to ride all the way to the airport that night. i don't see what the deal is.

Man, I must have barely made it home. I looked at my bike this morning and the "boot" Lee installed to save my tire was bulging out like crazy.

I hurt in a lot of places and my bike needs a lot of love.

I think it was fun. Maybe? I dunno.

It was epic, thats for sure.

We got in more elevation gain! Even if it was in an elevator.

My ears popped...twice...

Playing ping pong, xbox, putt-putt golf and eating free snack in an internet start up was fun.

For future reference, and this goes for everyone in the club, I always carry tire boots. Not sure if they necessarily work better than the $1 bill approach, as I've not had a chance to use either, but they're there for the asking.

That post pretty much sums up my feelings about the ride. So, should we chalk up the route selection to malice, incompetence, both?

Yes I had fun riding with people, and the occasional mechanical was a good opportunity to chitchat. I'm not going to call it the worst ride Evar or anything. The weather was good, I enjoyed talking and drinking with you lot, as always. Nobody broke any bones or suffered any grievous injury (that I'm aware of). Next time I'll pack more beer though.

well if were gonna walk down this path...

1 - I don't quite recall this ride being anymore "shit-tactular" than other long distance rides i've participated in the past year. In fact i seem to have a pretty good memory of one ride on a dedicated bike path that ended up with broken bikes AND broken riders (Samammish...anyone?).

2 - Where exactly were these "tons of unsafe riding"? the ragged road shoulder that tossed an un-drunk SKETCHY, the spill in front of me caused by ghosts, or the popping of tires? I haven't heard any injury report, nor did i see anyone needing to be rescued cause their equiptment failed. I think we handled ourselves pretty damn well, thank you.

3 - We got to SeaTac and picked up Badhill as planned, albeit a tad late. There are always going to be better routes to take, but we got there and back..and get this...no one died. Who cares about the reindeer games or who thinks that my way is better than yours? thats not new to this group to my knowledge. We got there and back alive, and thats what counts, right?

but really, i don't give a shit. I rode to have fun and to welcome back a fellow pointeethreer. Mission accomplished. if folks wanna go do their own thing, WTF do I care...cause i truly dont. I do think the clickiness is lame. but then again, this is Seattle, clickiness reigns supreme up here.

I agree, although I don't know that the route selection was due to some effort to fuck up other people's plans. Regardless, the stretch of MLK/900 between the Seattle City Limits and Rainier was stoopid and, in my wussy opinion, dangerous. I can think of at least 3 better ways to get to Rainier and Highway 900.

I did learn a new way to drive to downtown Renton, though.

that is a great way to drive there, and if we had taken a certain right turn that JobyLee missed, it would have been a wild fun dark switchback-riddled haul into the Kent valley.
I have a good friend who lives in that big ghetto er apartment building at the top of the hill and I've never been brave enough to ride all the way to her apartment.

that would have been less stupid and dangerous?
I think you must be confusing us with some other bike club.

Nice try, but it would have been more .83 to try to get to the airport as quickly as possible, then get drunk at the hotel bar.

For the record, Paul and I went on 176th to the Airport instead of on military and we got to the airport probably 10 minutes before the rest of y'all.

I think it would have possibly been most pointy three if we rode up the stoopid hill to White Center. Rolled into Seatac with enough time on our hands to go to Taco Truck. Gone to taco truck and bought beer from the gas station across the street. Wasted enough time at Taco Truck to merit an all out sprint for the last couple miles, gone to pick up Brandon, and then gone someplace else to drink beer and hang out.

I am grateful for the experience of The County Line, but I still don't really get why we chose to stop there when we were within spitting distance of the 9lb Hammer.

We passed up two taco trucks and a bar where they were begging us to go in. Kids these days. Grump Grump Grump.

P.S. Get out of my yard!

Hey guys, I'm curious. Did anyone notice me dancing with a dude at the calendar release party? I think his name was Casey. I didn't get his info, or if I did I lost it. I want to get a hold of him again. If you know him drop me a PM and let me know how to reach him.

Great dancer.

And thank you again for staying behind while I had my cascade or minor equipment failures (water bottle, light, water bottle again...). I still owe you a beer, or 4.

And yeah, our route once the rest of you took off was fine. A bit more uphill, then a nice cruise down onto International maybe 1/4 mile from the entrance to Sea-Tac. Then lots of dodging peds and cars looking for the rest of you.

On the whole route debate... the way went down seemed pretty dumb. That said, getting lost and climbing hills unnecessarily seems to be part of the Pointy3ian Way, so whatever, it was fun. There are some cries of regret from my stomach at the possibility of a taco truck; Country Line's potato pulp crinkly fries were all good and fine, but taco truck food and gas station beer would have been sublime.

I'm the one who wiped out in Pioneer Square, so that's another one, and the popping of my Seattle-bike-crash cherry (sniffle).

Work today was/is fun! I think I've probably had about 600 mgs of caffeine. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...

(apologies in advance if i'm screwing up names)
seemed like there were 2 or 3 on the MLK/900/sketchroad next to I-5, but I didn't see any of them.

another at the top of the burley hill after we turned left at the light. kat and chris and someone else i think. (other kat?)

then kat again into the curb right after we got off military rd.

on the last leg home after the county line someone I didn't recognize wiped out on the wet metal grate on the 14th ave bridge right in front of me.

Me too! That fucker Andrew cut me off. =P

It was an amazing land that kept me from being under the wheels of a very fast car about a foot from me in the other lane. Uninjured, somehow I unclipped both feet and landed sitting on my frame.

Awesomeness.

I managed to stay on my bike, despite being right, right behind the otherkat/chris collision. Just the 2 went down at that one.

i actually do have a better route now - going through allentown - that i'd like to take some time, i think andre's taken us on it in reverse from lakeridge park and through skyway? i honestly didn't realize that we were just above it when we were at the boeing access road. it connects back up to where you were saying at 68th/monster road.

that 176th shortcut would have been nice too.

you obviously do care, so drop the machismo (though i know that's hard for you).

i've missed most rides this summer due to car interaction fallout, so maybe i don't have a leg to stand on, but i distinctly remember a time when we had just a handful of mechanicals on any given night, and full-blown wipeouts were rare. i counted 7 wipeouts last night.

after the mlk shitstorm, I was not having fun anymore. The constant parade of stops didn't help either. last night left me really grumpy, and anyone calling that an "awesome ride" or "totally safe" has reality problems.

Not to be a mindless parrot here, but again, I agree. If you have a bunch of close calls on a ride, but no one gets hurt, you don't just say everything's hunky-dory. You (I hope) think about what might be wrong and try to avoid those conditions in the future, or at least mitigate them.

I somewhat agree, but to be fair, crashes, wipeouts, and mechanicals happen to almost everyone regardless of how fastidious you are in your maintenance and riding habits. Furthermore, most of the mechanicals were flats, which have nothing to do with how you maintain your bike and usually little to do with how you ride.

We rode through some shit-tastic areas, the MLK cluster fuck being the worse. If there is a shoulder most cyclists are used to using it, and as most people in the group don't have a good see-stuff style headlight so they probably thought it was gravel debris, not 2x4s, needles and kitchen sinks.

I honestly think the number of issues we had was a function of the number of people and the distance through some not so great areas. My wipeout was within a mile or so of where I caught the bus back to Ballard, and was mostly the consequence of the person in front of me turning left suddenly (I don't remember her name), the rain, and the beer. That was a, dare a I say as a noob, classic Pointy3ian wipeout, but the point is that I still ended up among those who had an "issue" on the ride.

I really do think the number of veterans who had issues on this ride is a testament to the bum route and the distance (although I know Point83 has done longer rides). Now I need to go and get my bifters moved back into place as I don't know how to untape and retape bars yet.

You don't have to move the tape at all. You can just wrestle it back, or loosen the bolt in the hood, reposition and retighten.

Crashing happens. I cannot think of a case on a ride that I was on in which the ride was the result of a mechanically deficient bicycle. Bollards, potholes, road turtles, train tracks, and vehicles are the most common obstacles, but it's usually the result of someone not paying as much attention as they could have been, or were taking a risk of some kind.

I thought pretty long and hard yesterday about what exactly it was that caused our large amount of falls the other night, so we could take measures to not run into this kind of deal again.

We had three falls due to a crappy ledge that we didn't know was there until people were falling all over it. So road conditions and stupid routes was definitely a large part of the falls. This is something avoidable, but no blame can really be placed. Group decision to take a risky route. Boo fuckin hoo. Let's plan better in the future.

I know my fall, which could have been disastrous, was very minor. The result of other people's drunken bobbing and weaving, not a major wipe out. I just couldn't avoid it. Let's try to space out a bit more while riding. Not a shit ton, but when we've had a bunch of falls and you're already drunk, maybe don't ride quite so close to your companions in conversation.

Not sure how all the falls happened, but being drunk and occasionally stupid (.83 TM) and taking crappy routes with not enough light seems to be our biggest factors.

Let us all invest in better lights and be a little bit more fastidious about personal distance and road conditions when we're riding in large groups. And let us count our blessings that all those wipe outs were so effing minor.

Stay safe, kids. And try, TRY to keep the rubber side DOWN.

Holy hell.

Did we illegally enter a rail yard and climb a series freight trains?
Did we pick a fight with a road-rager from west verginia, so that 6 cop cars came to settle things?
Did multiple people break bones?

That ride was tame.

You all should grow some testicles or go ride with cascade.
