Langston - the guys at Recycled know and love that bike. Serial # is a bit of a challenge due to the repaint - you can't make it out. :P bah! Does not help the cause, i know.

Lock Make Model Type- how was it locked? how long was it locked there? was it locked there consistently? was the broken lock left behind?

Damn. The kryptonite evolution mini?
How's someone going to pull that off on a busy street at a not entirely late hour in front of open businesses? I imagine an angle grinder would have been loud and sparky. Does sticking a car jack in and cranking away really work? It wasn't one of the old open with a bic pen models was it?

Sounds like they probably used a long breaker bar... the Krypto's don't have dual lock engagement and are easily defeated.
Kryptonite locks other than the NY lock are worthless.
Period.
You want your bike safe where you leave it all the time, have a 14mm ONguard chain and a Krypto NY lock together attaching sepperate triangles to two separate pieces or structural steel. That gives 12 minutes of protection against any angle grinder or a 60" breaker bar.
The mini evolution is only slightly better (3-5 seconds) than a $12 cafe cable. I like the onguard mini a lot better as it has dual engagement.
the best solution is to never be farther from your bike than the distance you can throw your pocket knife or shoot your pepper spray.
That being said,
looked at the pic, will ask around.
I am terribly sorry for your loss... bike theft should be a capital offense. That scum deserve to be eviscerated under he baleful eye of the great winged one in the frozen plain of dis.

It wasn't the bic pen lock, but as John described it didn't matter.
While the roommate wants the bike back, I think he wants to deliver a serious ass-kicking to the thief even more. If ya see it on the road, huck a u-lock in the direction of the rider and then we can administer vigilante justice. Bicycle jihad, bitches!

Something that I think your friend's misfortune really makes clear is that even a "good" lock isn't a guarantee your bike won't be stolen if that bike happens to be conspicuously desirable. One of the best ways to ensure your bike will still be there at the end of the day is to not use an expensive looking bike for your daily rider. That doesn't mean you should ride a shitty bike, just that your daily rider should be the least eye-catching that it can possibly be.
In any case, your friend did not deserve to lose his bike.
