Winter is here, it is snowing in the mountains, the leaves are carousing with the wind, and the wind itself is doing its damnedest to knock over even a sober cyclist. Time to drink gin!
When? Saturday 11/24 at 1:00pm.
Meet up? The liquor store at 2nd and Seneca. If you haven't already procured your libations, you can do so then.
Ride to? Belvedere Park in West Seattle (or possibly another park in West Seattle), because I still haven't ridden to West Seattle during the day and the idea of sitting in a park looking out across the Sound at downtown whilst drinking gin with you lovely people appeals to me.
I think everyone knows what I mean by "top shelf" gin, so just bring your favorite to share. If you want to bring shit in a gilded sleeve, go for it, but we may make you drink all of it.
Besides gin bring the usual stuff that goes with gin: lemons and limes, olives, cucumbers, pickled garlic, vermouth, tonic, whatever. Also bring food that goes with gin: pâté and cheese and fruit and baguettes. I'm going to bring a glass or two for myself, and I suggest you do the same, as gin out of plastic or paper cups kind of sucks.
If you want to bring equipment and ingredients to make hot gin drinks, by all means do.

I'm trying to decide if drinking gin and riding bikes seems like the best pre-funk for the Spatula City benefit. I mean, I'll need my strength for dancing to Orchestra Zirkonium's set.
Being a young-ster, I'm perfectly happy with my Bombay Sapphire, tho I realize it's likely not particularly top shelf. I spose I could bring the fixins for my Atomic Gin'n'Juice, which is a guaranteed delight, best suited for summer afternoons, but I could make an exception.

Bombay Sapphire is good stuff and the first gin I really loved. Not top of the line certainly, but damn tasty. Plus you can still get the gift packs with the absurd martini glasses around the holidays.

You want a view of downtown from West Seattle? If you don't want to climb a hill, your choices are Jack Block Park (Port of Seattle jurisdiction) and the Seattle Park that runs along the shore north of Jack Block. Seacrest Park is pretty much in the middle of this, but there are benches all along Harbor Ave SW up until Duwamish Head (where the shoreline curves back to the southwest and Alki). You could just go into Jack Block Park, and keep rolling north until you find a place you liked. Jack Block is very secluded (off Harbor Ave down a winding driveway), but I've seen tour buses pull into the parking lot, so it may not be deserted.
If you're willing to climb a hill, there's Hamilton Viewpoint, and Belvedere Park. Hamilton I've been to, and it has a classic Seattle view. To reach it, go almost to Duwamish Head, then climb up the switchback of California Ave. Belvedere is where Admiral Way turns to the west, and I don't think climbing up Admiral is desirable, so your best direct approach is probably up Fairmount Ave SW.

Gin is a special breed of booze, and is best consumed in particular locations.
I don't see why people have a problem with having a planned out location for drinking.

The ride is on, details are being set. The only thing I still need to figure out is what park we'll go to, which I'll be looking into today.
I have no idea why I wimped out on this, other than being a general weenie, as drinking gin, then going for an 80 mile ride the next day is exactly the sort of thing I should be doing.

Location is set. PM me or respond in the thread if you're planning on coming, so I have some sort of idea of how much food and glasses to bring.

Did you actually figure out a good way to get to Belvedere? I don't know if I will make the ride, but I'd like to make it to that park one of these days.

I haven't been out there by bike, so if someone who is familiar with West Seattle chimes in, I will bow to their wisdom.
Or I may just have to do a recon ride out there this weekend.
My thinking now is to head up the Alki Trail to Fairmount Ave, climb that to SW Admiral Way, and then just take that to Belvedere. In the event of Fairmount being overly steep or nasty, there are plenty of other ways to get from Alki up to Admiral Way.

Re:Fairmount
Fairmount is longer and steeper than you think it is. Don't try it on a single speed.
Best way to the top of the hill from alki: California ave is do-able on a geared bike, but is nearly as steep and long as fairmount.
Admiral Way is probably the shallowest, but busiest way, traffic wise.
honestly, when I have to climb up the hill for whatever reason, I typically ride up avalon way, and then alaska way, but that puts you a mile or two away from the admiral district.

I'm fairly certain Fairmount goes under Admiral. so if you go up this way, you will have to go a few blocks south of Admiral, then double back.
Some quick calculations using Gmaps:
Fairmount is the steepest way up: 351 feet of elevation gain in .69 miles.
California starts with a slope that is slightly harder than Admiral, then gets you a much easier slope for the last 150 feet of elevation gain. Admiral's climb is 282 feet in .8 miles, California's initial slope is 186 feet in .5 miles.
Avalon is considerably easier than both of these: 274 feet in 1 mile (climb up Avalon, turn right at 36th and head north).
But the easiest way of all is the back way up Admiral: Go all the way to Alki Beach, turn left onto any street from 60th Ave to 63rd Ave, then left onto Admiral and head east. 300 feet of elevation gain in 1.2 miles.
If you've got fixie riders, I'd take Avalon up. Unless you want some pie. Then go to the Alki Bakery and climb Admiral from there.

I tried to go up Fairmont once on my fixed gear. I was OK for the first 2/3 or so, standing up and straining slowly up the hill. There's even sharrows on the road and gaps in the speed bumps they put in after one too many late night local teen fart-can rallies up the hill; Fairmont can be a nice place to ride a bike, as it goes under admiral and is shaded by trees.
However, the hill gets progressively steeper, leaving you, tired and gasping, staring at the light in the trees from the cross street at the top, and the positively alpine cliff face of asphalt between you and that sweet, sweet level ground by the high school.
I walked. Nettles and no sidewalk, but I walked. I tried it again a week later on my geared bike, and made it up no problem with a triple chainring.

I take it back. If you start going up California, then divert onto Ferry Ave SW, you get 291 feet of elevation gain in .5 miles, which is steeper than Fairmount.
I like how the name of this street implies that people used to take it down from West Seattle to get to the ferry to downtown. That must have been fun when the roads were unpaved.

I made the mistake of trying to go up California from the beach the other day. Basically on my second day of ever riding hills in Seattle. I made it 1/3 up and walked for 25 feet and then got back on and then back off for another 25 feet and then finished. I think with enough practice, California won't be fast, but it will be fun to conquer on a fixie. It's on my list of things to make sure I tell to kiss it. That hill is going down.
Also - Gin in "winter"? Really? I'm a Summer gin girl. I may have to try some to test and see if I can change my ways.

It sounds like I should do a recon ride this weekend. The Lincoln Park Fire Pit idea is also appealing, as I have heard good things about there in Pointy3 Lore.
As far as gin in winter... yeah, that's part of the point. I'm more of a warm weather gin person too - a gin a tonic on a warm/hot day is bliss - but when Aden suggested this I decided to not wait for the weather to cooperate. I'm planning on a counterpoint ride afterward: hot toddies or Irish coffee.
On the other hand, we'll have that all-natural refrigeration. And we'll bring fatty food to keep us warm.

Did I suggest this!?! I just thought I was there. I thought it was more of a J suggestion. Well. I'm down to take credit for suggestions on badass rides. This should be a good one.
I expect to see all your hungover asses at 8:30 the next morning gearing up for the Fatty Ride. Indeed.

The weather looks like it's going to be good, I'm getting paid on Wednesday, I still need to get glasses and figure out everything I'm going to bring and exactly what park we're going to, but this is happening.
I'm planning on making this a cold gin sort of drink ride, but if anyone wants to bring stuff to make hot gin drinks I have no objection.

Sadly (and not so sadly!) more important things have come up.
Late family Thanksgiving in the morning and then meeting the first new blood of this generation in my family in the afternoon. So I will be too busy to ride with you fools. But this will be good because I do not need to get wasted the day before the long haul.

We'll miss you Aden!
I haven't been too active on the forums for the last few days due to my gf getting appendicitis on Tuesday evening and having an appendectomy Wednesday morning. Yay for being awake for 42 hours straight. I've been wearing my little sexy nurse outfit and helping her get back on her feet.
That said, I just picked up a bottle of Hendricks, upgraded my crap stock tires to some Secas, will be getting munchies tomorrow on the way down, and I will be at the liquor store at 1pm.
If no one shows up, I'll just have to drink and eat everything on my own.

eh. After rethinking the ramifications of being out in the cold at Husky Stadium for 8 fricking hours, I'm going to come drink gin with y'all and then go home to the comfort of my couch to watch it on the boob toob.
The prospect of playing in the Alumni Band all day just is not as much fun as it was when it was 70deg in September, I guess

I tried to find y'all at the park, didn't really want to ride downtown and then back to W.Sea. Rolled around the neighborhood where the park was, as per my maps, but never found Belvedre Park. Found a really cool spot off of Thornton(?) that we need to go to on a Thursday, though.

We ended up at Hamilton Viewpoint Park. I realized just after I left that I forgot to post my digits to this thread. Sucks that you couldn't find us. There was only three of us, myself, John and Robin, but we drank good gin with lime, ate Rouge et Noir Yellow Buck Camembert on chunks of baguette, all with an awesome view of Seattle, then headed over to Aaron's Bicycle Repair to drink the last of John's gin and warm up.
And I learned an important lesson: no matter how comfy your huge and well made made messenger bag is when loaded up with heavy shit, that shit will still be heavy when you start climbing hills. I still have an unopened bottle of Hendricks and tonic that I hauled back with me.
