Oh yeah ... don't take westlake.
Don't get me wrong, it's some piss poor engineering, but seriously ... take a different fucking road.
lucky for you that you don't work in SLU? turns out there aren't actually very many good routes through there. westlake was pretty nice in the pre-track era.
but no, i like your plan. so once the badly-designed SLUT tracks show up on stewart and on eastlake, what's the "different fucking road" you plan on taking to get downtown?
the correct solution is for everybody to ride 2.0" tires or wider.

That's right. Mayor McCheese wants SLUT 2.0 to run up Eastlake. What will be the SLUT-free route from the U District then? I-5?

Presumably you also ride from downtown back to Ravenna. What's your route back?
I always take Westlake; the alternatives (Fairview/Eastlake/Dexter) seem inferior to me.

Well, I was hoping for something I hadn't considered. Given a choice between pointlessly climbing part of Capitol Hill and dealing with the retards at the I-5 onramp, or Westlake, me and my 1.5" tires will stick with Westlake.
Say hi to the Sound Transit layover bus for me.

COME ON DUMMY DRIVE OVER CAPITOL HILL LIKE A GOOD LITTLE P-I COMMENTATOR.
Not sure about you folks, but I cannot carry a family size load of groceries on the bus while running to pick up the kids with the the dog. It is scary how unrealistic these left wing wacko nut jobs are about mass transit. Think about it. Why are SUVs so popular? Because they get the job done. Sure, maybe a lesbian with no family can ride to her government job carrying her lunch in her little backpack, but give me a break. The mass of folks I know cannot live like that.

I do believe that the SLUT is free through the month of December. And according to her website, "Bicycles are allowed in the center section of the streetcar vehicles". Has anyone considered a mass-boarding-with-bikes of one of the streetcars during the Taming The SLUT ride? Perhaps as a grand finale?

whats the point of owning a bike if you arent going to ride it, I can see if you rode tons of miles and wind up being a bit too tired to go anymore and hop a bus but really?

I see this as a protest against this after-thought mentality of power players in Seattle.
Implementing, removing, or fundementally altering aspects of our road system in a manner that negatively impact cyclists is bull shit. I don't care what neighborhood it affects. I don't care if it directly impacts me. What I do care about is that Mayor Nickels and this city is rah-rah cycling when it's photo worthy or Earth Day or Bike to Work month and then go about their merry business the rest of the time. It's crap.
Any time there is a discussion about changing roadways, I want the power players to immediately check to see if cyclists safety needs have been considered and addressed with the cycling community. I want SBAB or Cascade or someone to be involved in all aspects of these changes. No more of this "sorry, we'll get to your issues next time around" nonsense. Always ahead of time. Period.

here it IS...plain and simple...it starts with one, and if noone bitches, then they spawn off a half a shitton and spread these "horrible traintracks monster" all over the gawddamned city.
So then what?
Come on you fat lazy bitches, come tell the city (and Paul "i'm rich, so go piss off" Allen) that we WANT our roads save. How many folks are gonna eat shit cause of this "piss poor" design before y'all start getting mad?
It's bullshit that this has been allowed to procede to completion without the city taking into account our saftey. If we just stand back and shrug it off..."go ride another road"...then we give the bikers that come after us a worse place than what we have now. what about the saftey of those wanna be hipsters, commuters and future p83 members?
Sure, some of you will never breed (thank GAWD), but for those who will, or give two squirts of piss about making the city and its gold lined coffers think twice about being tardbags, come on down!
EVEN BETTER...COUNTER PROTEST!!!
that would be a hoot and a hollar! I need to drink more and finish building my wheels now.

I think some people just need to learn how to ride fucking bikes. Take your bike to San Fran some time and ride. Now thats a cluster fuck of tracks. The SLUT has been built get over it, your waisting your time. Go around it, or learn how to ride over it, or walk over it, o never mind, some of you may sprain your poor little ankles. Ya see, you just can't win. FUCK IT

what the fuck is wrong with you people. asking the city to put up a fucking sign saying "dear cyclists, these tracks may cause you to fall down and break your pelvis" seems pretty fucking reasonable. also having them mark an alternate route that gets you to the same place.
i'm not upset at the SLUT tracks because i'm worried about how the tracks will impact me directly as a cyclist, fuck i've ridden on interstates and on aurora in the snow with a loaded trailer. and i distinctly remember some of your pussy asses (sketchy) complaining about the ride out on mlk south.
if you're going to take something that until recently was a major bicycle arterial and a very logical way to get into downtown and make it a hazard the least they could do is add proper warning and alternate route signage, investigate some remediation options (flange filler), and not do the same stupid thing - putting tracks in the outside lane - when they extend it.
not everyone has access to a community like this. people who come visit the city, folks who just start commuting or are otherwise new, people who don't ride their bikes regularly enough to be confident with a horizontal bunny-hop in traffic but need to go somewhere in SLU, etc. just because most of us here are totally fine doesn't mean it's not egregious that the city thought it was appropriate to hang cyclists out to dry and not do a single fucking thing to ameliorate the situation.

lee, MLK had cars flying by us at 60mph in the dark. yea warning signs would be nice for the slut. The simple fact is is that people need to learn to ride over them. There not going to go away.

i don't disagree with you. but the city seems to think that cyclists should either know that from birth, or find out the hard way which seems like bullshit.

I haven't bothered reading the full thread, so this may already have been suggested. Why not .83 or Seattle Likes Bikes step up and make some signs? I think it is ridiculous the city hasn't done it themselves. Maybe they'll come up with something if they don't our taste in signage.

Why not have SLB teach a class on how to safely bunny hop the tracks on the opening day?

Riding is plan A, making signs and marking the road is plan "B" as in Bryce's fund.
Speaking of signs, my free beer offer for the first person to tell me where they found an ad for the ride hasn't been claimed, so apparently I've been doing a shitty job. Any tips?
I had an idea for getting a thin-strip type ad to put on the top tube of city bike racks, like where all those Dank Bags stickers are, but I don't have anything in a suitable format. The city racks have a 1.9" diameter, so call it an ad <3" tall and either 8.5" or 11" wide depending on how you think it would print up best.
I'm really starting to think someone on the ride is going to eat shit turning from Westlake on to Lenora, btw.

Friend, I am certain of it.
As I was remarking to myself that I already had a list of likely candidates in mind, Ben popped up on the horizon, offering to tell us all about furniture design, and I laughed for a good two minutes.
A swell thing, ridiculousness.
As for ads, what about punching a whole thru a whole stack of 4/pg flyers, and then twining them to bike racks around town?

Not only that, but I saw the test run operator doing a test layover reading a test newspaper.

as little riding as I do in downtown
I think Id be more ok with it if it was like that old disneyland submarine ride where you can see all kinds of creatures from lost times but without the lines and a guy in a mouse outfit waving and touching his belly like hes talking or emoting through gestures

Seattle Likes Bikes rides should be fun and social. Costumes are encouraged be they condom themed for slut safety or mouse ears and finding nemo fish suits.
Did you know the SLUT makes a lot of noise? _every time_ it stops and starts it rings a bell. Cars don't honk when you step on the gas.

My friend Nick just sent me some cool signs for the ride (links on the events page) based on this sign
Print 'em out, stick them on your bag, and come out and ride Wednesday! I can't believe the Seattle is being so difficult about putting up signs when other cities are so willing...
