here it IS...plain and simple...it starts with one, and if noone bitches, then they spawn off a half a shitton and spread these "horrible traintracks monster" all over the gawddamned city.

So then what?

Well... looking at the math in the article... we go bankrupt?
(wonder if they factored in lawsuits from injured cyclists.)

$2 million per year. To be paid from private sponsorships: $500,000 annually. (ongoing fund-raising) Estimated ticket sales: $500,000 annually

Paul Allen has demonstrated that when you are mega rich... raping individuals is no challenge anymore... you have to rape entire cities.

Eastlake might be next..

"There's another price: Streetcar operating subsidies will likely mean that less Metro bus service will be added in Seattle after the end of 2009, when operating costs will shift from the city to Metro. Streetcar ads are expected to cover a share of operating costs.

Advocates hope to extend the South Lake Union line north across the University Bridge, which carried trains in the 1920s. To do that, the city might have to remove parking or road lanes from narrow Eastlake Avenue East, so streetcars could get their own right of way, as they do in Tacoma."

Oh yeah ... don't take westlake.

Don't get me wrong, it's some piss poor engineering, but seriously ... take a different fucking road.

lucky for you that you don't work in SLU? turns out there aren't actually very many good routes through there. westlake was pretty nice in the pre-track era.

but no, i like your plan. so once the badly-designed SLUT tracks show up on stewart and on eastlake, what's the "different fucking road" you plan on taking to get downtown?

the correct solution is for everybody to ride 2.0" tires or wider.

Yay! This is the first (and as of yet, only) sign to be installed on Westlake. Unless I've been wildly unobservant, it went up today. There are two more on 6th Ave on the north side of the intersection with Stewart.

Coincidence? I think not. I wonder how many more will be installed by tomorrow evening. Is one sign on Westlake enough for a good photo op? It's installed just outside of Barolo, the starting point for a sometimes there are no good alternatives example.

I doubt it's a coincidence. I got this email yesterday, in response to frequent bitching:

Dear Mr. Nellis:

Thank you for you follow-up response regarding the streetcar corridor.
I thought you would be pleased to find out that SDOT will be installing
warning signs as you describe at all approaches to the corridor. If you
have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to let
me know.

This is so lame, but it proves something. As my adviser in transportation planning says: "Unless we all make a big fuss about the lack of adequate biking facilities, SDOT WILL ignore us."

Only 1 sign on Westlake, no sharrows in left lane, and the no new northbound bike lane on 9th Ave N.

Ride is on

Early congratulations on all the letter writing and publicity we've generated are in order. Thanks everyone!

WE RIDE TONIGHT!
- Some signs are installed now, but the city hasn't mentioned anything about them.
- The city hasn't mentioned sharrows.
- The city hasn't mentioned the track gap filler.
- The city hasn't said anything about meeting with Portland's DOT and streetcar people.
- The city hasn't changed the timeline for the bike lane on 9th.

Seattle Times is sending a photographer and reporter. The reporter wrote a story a few days ago and his bicycle commute takes him up Westlake!

The Seattle PI posted a short blog entry this morning.

The SLOG has a few posts mentioning either the ride or the danger to cyclists.

Apparently Cascade's phones are ringing off the hook with calls from angry people in the mayor's office, from city council members, from streetcar people, and from vulcan...we have people's attention.

If you have a bike with wide tires, please bring it.
Dress warm.
Bring signs.
Bring first aid kits just in case someone falls.
Given the hazard, I advise wearing a helmet.

Remember, smile, have fun. Make the mayor's office look like idiots when they call us terrorists (yes, someone on the Mayor's staff equated SeattleLikesBikes to terrorists).

Ride no more than two abreast and only as far right as is safe.
Obey stop signs, stop lights, etc.
Safe might mean riding only one abreast and giving everyone lots of room in places.

Since this is a four lane road, I'm not sure that we are technically required to pull over and let cars pass if we are delaying more than 5 cars, but it would be a nice gesture to find a way to let cars get around us if we are creating backups. Our protest here is that the city didn't consider cyclists, we aren't trying to piss off the car drivers. We are trying to be seen.

I'll see you there tonight.

was that your emo faux-hawked emoticon, Jeff?

"it is so hurt, in a deep and emotional way, by the lack of consideration Vulcan, Paul Allen, and SDOT have shown cyclists when undertaking this project.

granola."

let's ride bikes!

Stef, if you're serious about supplies, we could probably use a) antiseptic wipes b) "New Skin" compound (it's a wound-sealant) c) gauze dressings (the non-stick kind with a plasticky film on one side), and oh, you know, whiskey or ibuprofen, appropriate painkillers of some sort. i have lydocaine and New Skin in my kit, but not enough wipey things for bleeders.

after the ride a few of us are heading up to Pies & Pints to celebrate the birthday of a friend who is now allowed out in public after dark (yes, she's finally legal!) and to listen to some musicks, all who wish are welcome to join us.

I was just down at Whole Foods. I weaseled my way into radio interviews with the KUOW and KPLU reporters who were down there. "Have you heard about the bike ride?" I asked.

I told them about the ride and explained the issues. I tried not to whine too much since that's what we're known for. Hopefully I didn't sound like a dipshit and will get some airtime!

Cyclists in general. From today's Seattle Times:

Regarding "Cyclists, skinny tires, rails — not a good mix" [Local News, Dec. 6]: So you local bicyclists cannot negotiate the trolley-car rails. Tough; ride somewhere else. You already ride all over the sidewalks, cut through private parking lots at top speed, plus swerve recklessly through traffic more often than not.

You pay no license or registration fees, carry no identification, and are not required to carry any liability insurance or, in other words — you get a free ride at others' expense.

Yet you are the city's most whiny, sniveling coalition there is. You get everything for free, and still whine for more.

Stacy Merrick is reported as having only two options while pedaling near the trolley rails on Westlake North: She could either fall into rush-hour traffic or slam into parked cars. She chose the parked cars. Actually, she had several options, one being slowing down and taking control of her bike. Another would be to ride sensibly someplace else. She certainly had the legal right to ride there, but it doesn't say much for her common sense to do so.

Did she bother to contact the owner of the vehicle she damaged, to pay for the damage? Will she receive a citation for negligent riding?

As long as the bicycle community insists on riding like a bunch of over-the-edge yahoos, they shouldn't be too upset if no one else gives a fig if one is (thwarted) now and then.

He hates bikes. Thinks we're all whiners. "Spandexed scofflaws" even. Of course, if seattle had gotten its shit together, we could have had a big fucking park there, but fuck that, not a chance. It might mess up business.

An enemy of my enemy I call friend...

but yeah... that's why we need to buy him a bike!

He's the fattest guy at KOMO, his co-workers will razz him to ride it. He's totally the guy you pick on when his adversaries buy him a bike to get him into shape.

Anyway... yeah... the park woulda been cool... now instead of a central park we are going to have some wierd mutant microsoft campus style south lake union technical park that will have biohazard spills and ebola monkeys escaping from the biotech labs and a bunch of green space that has constant security patrols to prevent bonfires.

Well, apparently we got a couple of signs put up.

Plus we got the city and/or Paul Allen to pay for a lot of SPD overtime. You missed the police sergeant handing out flyers at the meetup spot. Sounds like a good waste of your taxpayers dollars there.

I've got the flyer in my pack somewhere, but basically it quoted a couple of RCWs/SMCs "which were not on your flyer" (wtf?):

First one said it's against the law to obstruct a streetcar.
Second one said you must obey any legal order from a police officer.

It seems like someone thought we were gonna do a sit-in on the SLUT tracks, or something. If this came from the SPD Intelligence Division, I think they need to be fired.

There were probably around 20 bike cops with us when the ride started, along with the <10 motorcycle cops. The bike cops peeled off after about one iteration of the ride, leaving the motorcycle cops to babysit us for a little while longer. It was very silly.

I should also add that the Seattle Times reporter was at the meetup, and he talked quite a bit with Kevin and Michael. In addition there was a photographer at the meetup and at Westlake and Denny for most of the ride snapping pictures.

Those cops were the highlight of the ride.

They hate the tracks two, the woman I was talking with said that the bike police have complained about how dangerous the SLUT tracks are and how dangerous the SLUT is...

That flier was also... like way friendly... basically, they got the SLB flier and they made a flier to supplement us saying "these are rules you forgot that we can ding you for" and gave them to us and said "hey... all the power to ya!"

Big thumbs up for the Bike police, they were definitely on our side...

I think everyone except Paul Allen and all the politicians in seattle that suck his money laden cock is completely with us about what needs to be changed.

Did anyone get contact info for the girl that has already gotten a broken arm from the SLUT tracks? She doesn't have insurance and has medical bills coming from the SLUT caused accident. I gave her Duggans number in the hope that he can start swinging a suit against the city... she seemed a little intimidated at the thought of suing the city.

Most fun I have had in awhile. Fuck it was very hard to ride legally.

I keep forgetting I have a scanner. PDF of the SPD flyer.

And yeah, I don't fault the individual cops, who behaved fine, but whoever decided they needed 30 officers at this event should be dressed down.

Actually, the SPD Intelligence Unit probably knew from trolling our local sites, that 30 officers was easy, no problem. If they saw something crazier on the horizon, I'm sure they could've fielded more..

so wait, what does it mean that it's illegal to "obstruct, hinder, interfere, or delay in any way the movement of a streetcar"?

does that mean that rush hour traffic has to stay out of the track lane?

I postulate that this ordinance is over 100 years old, and it means you're not allowed to herd your cattle across the street if a streetcar is coming.

News at 11.

kiro had no mention of us in their slut coverage.

king:
"the south lake union street car is up and running, sparking peaceful protest tonight. dozens of cyclists took the streets of south lake union objecting to the placement of the streetcar's rails saying it's a problem for them." featured a short video clip of a few cyclists turning right from westlake on to harrison. then it was an interview with nick licata ragging on the streetcar.

komo:
just schram reading this word for word i think... i drifted off. the next story was about a guy drinking vodka while waiting in line at the airport.

It's good to be the King, I dig their angle. Thank you, TiVo.
