i agree with this wholeheartedly and thus i went last night, but that was the saddest fucking thing i have ever seen.
we turned ourselves into a fucking whining sniveling self-intrest group.
1. 40 fucking people, more people have posted on this thread. seriously 40 fucking people. we came across as a fucking joke.
2. no one at the fucking meeting point at 5. i rode up and was greeted by a dozen bike cops and no protesters.
3. people riding like idiots.
4. never once road anywhere near a fucking trolly.
5. had a meet up time that any reasonable person couldn't make.
i didn't want to be on the news because i was fucking embarassed to be involved.
fucking embarassed.
if, and i mean IF, we do another protest of anything, it better turn out way better than the last two.
but i strongly suggest thinking about all of this before we get all happy with the fucking press releases.
wow, maybe I was in the wrong pack of people then.
first, yeah 40 people was lackluster but it did stir up some publicity and the city is now fully aware what the protest was about.
second, yes people did show up on time. I for one, was in the middle of the park at 445 and someone came down and told me that they meeting point was on the corner of dexter. we waited for a few minutes and noticed a lot of people going to the area where the cops where at. I don't know if you are pissed at the fact that people didn't promptly show up at 5 or pissed about the meet up time.
third, I didn't see anyone riding like idiots. actually, I was really surprised on how many people actually we trying to ride two abreast in the left lane. No one was running lights and I didn't see anyone trying anything dumb. Now this was just in my group of riders so maybe something was going on elsewhere.
fourth, the group I was in rode by the trolley at least 3 times. I think that there were only two operating at the time? I could be wrong.
fifth, the meet up time was alright. yeah, I had to hustle up 3rd to get there right after work but it seems to work out fine. I didn't hear anyone complaining. Again, maybe your complaint is that the time was too early and not many people can make it at the time. I don't know.
I'm not trying to beat down every grip you had. you have your reasons for being embarrassed and that's too bad because I had a good time and I am hoping that the ride will make some things change.

Which is another WTF of the design here, but yeah we should have handled that better.
I just tapped on the car window and gave the guy a heads-up that some folks might be trying to cross his lane in the next block and he was fine with that as long as we didn't barricade him in...he was on his way to his girlfriend's house...she had just been robbed.

What, on several miles of tracks someone just happened to notice some ball bearings and called the police? So if other metallic debris, the sort that always ends up on the streets, happens to fall in the tracks and the SLUT runs over it, the trolley car is damaged? What are they going to do--have street sweepers check the tracks every day?

With tracks in the right lane, what's the safest way to make a right turn on a bike?
From the left lane I check back over my right shoulder for cars, bikes, the s.l.u.t., ball bearing delivery trucks, buses, motorcycle cops, etc., do my fancy right-turn arm signal, and cross the right lane and tracks at a safe angle. I hate the just-standing-there-in-the-street-waiting-for-the-right-lane-to-clear-trying-to-not-get-creamed part.

yes. they do every day, just like they do the ExpressLanes on I-5 & I-90 and all other major roadways. The cost of liabilty is significantly higher than to pay some schlub to go out and scope it out.

Point 83 is a good group, but think about our Tues/thurs day rides and ask yourselves, should we get involved in this kind of shit with way we act. I'll be the first to admit i'm one of the worst ones. That's also why you didn't see me on the slut ride.

SLB has gotten enough attention now that we might be able to request a meeting with the mayor or city council members before we go to the streets with a ride or paper the media with press releases. There are lots of people who are frustrated with the way things are and want things to change. SLB seems like it is making progress, but maybe we need to grow beyond just doing protest rides.
I'm thankful that everyone here hasn't objected too much when we have long threads on SLB stuff. Maybe it is time for SLB to get it's own forum outside of .83

From what I can tell, most people in .83 really do bicycle for transportation. Too many people in Cascade load their bikes on thier SUV, drive down to gasworks, bike for 15 miles, load their bikes back on their SUV and go home. Yeah, we drink, but we also use bikes as our main mode of transportation, so it isn't just being whiney jerks when we protest.
But yeah, SLB shouldn't be about getting into trouble or drinking and so far I don't think it has been. It has been about showing that a lot of regular people who bicycle every day are concerned about the way the city is ignoring cyclists.

The UW Daily had a front page article about the SLUT today and its hazards for bikes, including a mention of SLB. They talked to Hiller, and Portland's bicycle coordinator, and quoted SDOT as saying they're doing a lot of stuff SLB asked for, such as putting up 40-50 warning signs and investigating a better flange filler.
Then again, they captioned a picture of the SLUT with some text about "Sound Transit's University Link, a segment in Seattle's developing light rail system", so God only knows how much of what they wrote was correct.

And did they also make Bell between 8th & Denny two way or 9th between Denny & Westlake? My spider senses tell me no and there's no way to get to the "start" of 9th Ave North other than from Denny. And why would you be on Denny and go out of your way, past either Dexter or Westlake to ride northbound on it?
You know, there was a good fucking reason Westlake was NB only and 9th Ave N. was SB only* before the SLUT was installed. I'm not a traffic engineer, but I think the fork in the road at Jillian's up north and the change in the city's grid pattern down south had something to do with it.
At least the southbound bike lane will be nice.
* except for that little one lane dual direction block between Mercer and Republican.

Under the project details link off of the link that Greg provided, there is a map. It makes my head hurt. If I follow this right, they either expect a lot of bike traffic to filter around the Lake Union Loop trail, or hop onto Broad/Valley or Mercer(!) to get over onto Fairview ...and since Bell is one way, how do you get down onto this from the north side.
My head hurts.
They had better do a kick-ass job on those signs, I ride that route regularly (southbound) right now ...though I usually let it take me onto westlake instead of on to Bell because I'm lazy like that... and I'm not seeing how it is going to work.
