they store some of these snowplow engines in Umatilla. The ridiculous thing is that they need them when they cross the Blues in the winter!

I chatted with Hiller and found out a few interesting things.
When Portland added their first streetcar, it was on the right hand lane just like the SoLU Streetcar is despite the voiced concerns of their cyclist community.
In the first year, they had a lot of cyclist accidents due to the tracks. After that, the accident rate dropped back to the norm, presumably because cyclists either selected other routes or they were more cautious after they and/or their friends were injured along the tracks.
Since then, Portland has had a policy of putting tracks in the center of the street with center island loading platforms.
In general, there is a concern over flange fillers because dirt and debris tend to collect underneath the filler which eventually causes a problem for the train. I think the filler that Josh found is removable for cleaning so it would mitigate that concern.
Vulcan would like to get an alternate bike route open now, the city wants to wait until all of vulcan's construction projects are done.
Initially, the SDOT project manager in charge of the streetcar wanted to ban all bicycles from Westlake.
The more people we can get out for this protest, the more leverage we give the advocacy folks to work through the official channels.
As much as we have a desire to beat up "SDOT fanboy" Lagerway, he did convince the SDOT project manager in charge of this project that banning cyclists from this route was a futile exercise that would just frustrate everyone.
Cascade and Pete Lagerway submitted concerns, just as the advocacy folks did in Portland, over the tracks and placement when the initial design was going through, but SDOT ignored the concerns under pressure from Vulcan (presumably and the Mayor) to just get the streetcar done.
Since the 12th is coming up fast, we probably need to get busy flyering and organizing the protest ride if we are going to do it.

I work for group health and they are making a huge wonderful stink about how great it is and sent an email out to everyone about it.
I responded and said that I will officially not be working that day in order to protest it along with all the other cyclists and or/persons who are not for this.
I did not receieve or have received anymore emails since that...
oh well

I think corporate pressure will really help cyclist win the battle. There's been a lot of speculation about my employer becoming a large tenant of the area, so I tracked down our transportation czar. I gave him a packet of information (sample cycling routes, pictures, etc.) to showcase how a move to SLU could make things unsafe for bike commuters. I bet if a [rumored] multi-million dollar relocation were contingent a few thousand dollars worth of paint and signs, it would happen in a hurry.
...And then the transportation czar went on paternity leave until December 17th, d'oh!
But my dentist is an avid cyclist, and her business is right next to Westlake (medical dental building) and she offered to write a letter. Yeah!
Reach out to business owners, folks. As we saw on Stoneway just one can wield a lot of influence.

you obviously didnt see me eat shit above GG last year...yeah, it CAN happen. And dont think that the lack of "out" routes on that stretch of road dont pose a real a threat to me too.
just cause i'm low and fast dont mean i'm invincible.

There have been a couple of occasions where I've seen you you mis-estimate the velocity required to navigate a tricky section and become a passenger on that sled, typically resulting in nothing more than a brief brown-trousers moment, but with the potential for so much more.

This is Kevin's baby, but here's what needs to get done:
1) 4/pg Flyers AND full-pg posters created BY TOMORROW, which is Mass! 2) Flyers/posters distributed&posted
3) newsletter written/sent
4) website updated
5) press release written/sent
I DO NOT HAVE TIME. I want to, but like you, I have a whole life of my own and lots of other important commitments in it. Plus plus plus? I need my sanity right now, which means actually taking time to make art and retreat from the world.
<3, N*
Ps. We will be holding a SeattleLikesBikes "Ways that Seattle Doesn't Like Bikes" plotting meeting early 2008, we'll keep you critters posted so you can attend/imbibe.

Word, let's do!!
I can put together a newsletter next week, I know Henry's been slammed with work, too, but hopefully he'll have time to send it after I have time to write it :)
If nobody else is interested in writing a press release, I'll see what I can do.
I can print flyers as always (whoo, corporate sponsorship!), but I don't have time/energy to create them.

Unfortunately I've been really busy lately. I'd appreciate any self-organizing help advertising the ride that folks can offer. It takes a village to ride a bike in protest? Or something.
Does anyone know where to find a whole bunch of condoms free/cheap? It'd be fun to tape them to handbills.

How about this for flyer text?
What:
Tame the SLUT bike ride
When:
SLUT Opening Day, Dec 12th - 5pm meetup, Ride from 5:30-6:30pm
Why:
SDOT ignored it's bicycle and pedestrian staff and local bicycle clubs and experience in Portland and put the SLUT tracks where cyclists have been trained to ride. Many cyclists have already been injured on these tracks.
SDOT is dragging their feet on the planned nearby alternate route and have it scheduled to open late in 2008 or early 2009.
We don't want any more blood on the tracks.
How:
Cyclists with wide tires ride in the right hand lane with the tracks.
Cyclists with skinny tires ride in the left hand land and make cautious exaggerated turns when needing to cross the tracks.
Where:
Meet at Denny Park, along Dexter.
[insert route map here]
Fun:
chants -- "The SLUT won't run until the streets are done."
And by done we mean sharrowed.
t-shirt slogans --
"SLUT: Tracks Wide Open"
"Get run over by the SLUT"
"SLUT: Blood on the tracks"
"Paul Allen, you kill us"

i've got a flyer tossed together using Kevin's verbiage form the SLB wiki and attached the proposed route map.
I just need to figure a way to upload it to the wiki for review.

I bet UW Student Health has heavily discounted condoms. Someone with access to that should check it out. :) I can help sponsor.
AND I want to help with t-shirts. Either help lead or help follow. PM me t-shirt people ...
