I haven't seen you guys in a while or been on the forums recently, so I figure I might give you an update of the shits that's happened lately.
The shitty:
On my way home from work 2 weeks ago, I made a free right onto 1st, and the guy in front of me instantly slammed on his brakes and swerved right to avoid a cyclist darting into traffic in front of us (he was turning left against a red light ahead). I didn't quite stop in time and hit his back fender at about 3 mph. It was just enough force for me to get my wheel stuck on his bumper while I slow motion went over the handle bars. The guy got out of his car, made sure his car didn't suffer any damage, looked at me without saying a word, got back in his car and drove off. The other cyclist came over and yelled that he got the plate number and that he and his girlfriend live nearby so he would "assemble a crew of witnesses". It turns out the plate he got was totally wrong, but he assured me that he'd get several witnesses to fry the guy. I barely had a bruise on me, every component on my bike looked fine, my wheels were true, but the Colnago now has a beautiful bent top tube and down tube. Thus Italian engineering can handle slamming into a car at 30mph, but not at 3mph.
The shittier:
For those that know him, John Lehman, the head mechanic at R&E in the U-district was out on a ride with Beau Hart (used to ride with us, also a mechanic there) and very suddenly wiped out his bike and landed on his face. He was unconscious and unresponsive on the ground. He was taken to Harborview (where he is now), and it appears that he did not suffer a head injury, but had some sort of aneurysm burst in his head causing him to lose consciousness while riding. I haven't seen him in the last two days, but I've heard he is now off the respirators, and conscious again. He's had surgery to reset the shattered bones in his cheek and jaw and he should be ok in the long run, but it will be a very long recovery process.

I hope John recovers quickly.
And alastair, you know you should buy an absurd frame to put all that record 10spd stuff on. Like a huffy, or something. But I'm sorry to hear about the Colnago.

oh man shitty...
I know john had been off his bike with fucked up knees for awhile and I flaked out on a ride I was supposed to do with him and Beau awhile back.

Now for the good news:
John is back to being conscious, a smartass, and most importantly someone who has full memory, and is able to move all the body parts that are supposed to move. He is still weak as shit, and will need a lot of recovery, but things are looking up and up.
On the bike front, I got a hot tip that ebay Canada was the shit for finding bike stuff that doesn't get the bids run up and it turned out to be true. On the way to me is a Casati Evasione. It is made of the same tubing, lugs, model year and dimensions as my old Colnago. The only differences that I can find are the paint is black with white lettering, it doesn't have a braze-on for the front derailleur, and it has internal cable routing on the top tube. Although I bought it on ebay Canada the dealer is based in Brooklyn. I found out after the fact that our buddy Sheldon Brown had this line on Casatis on his webpage:
"Not all Casati bikes are of the same quality apparently. Rumor has it that the examples coming in from the big mail-order company in Brooklyn New York are actually the best examples!"
