The other night night a bit before midnight I was riding with a few friends on Cornwall (In Bellingham), right in front of the Assumption Church, when we hear a car revving up from the intersection behind us. Realizing that he's probably doing double the speed limit and coming from the general direction of downtown johnny's, I yell for everyone to get out of the road. My friend, the living martyr, proceeds to dismount his bicycle and swing it around. The SUV races past us in the other lane going about 50 (speed limit's 25), and once past us, slams on its brakes and skids about half a block down the rain-dampened road and into a telephone pole. As I am riding toward the car to ensure that nobody's (seriously) injured, the driver emerges from the cloud of steam engulfing his ex-vehicle.
"You guys better have insurance!"
"Why? we're all alright."
"well you guys caused this!"
"Whatever, you were way over the speed limit."
"Well who even knows what that is! I'm gonna call the police..."
"Ok, go ahead."
"I am the police! Who you want me to call, SPD? You want me to get Seattle Police Department down here?"
We ride away into the night, leaving the stranger to contemplate his crumpled car.

the way I see it, the only thing we did wrong was not to call the cops on this guy, and the only reason we didn't do that is because the last time we'd been out for a ride with out-of-towners, we ran over a hobo and then waited around for what seemed like a couple hours for the authorities to show up and deal with it.
drunk and speeding caused the accident (have you ever lost control at 25?), my friend was at best a catalyst. Come to think of it, I don't even remember which friend it was...

Yeah, no... they didn't do anything wrong. In all reality any pedestrian or vehicle in the road has the right to make 'emergency stops' and anything qualifies. The person who causes an accident is the one who causes and accident. By no means did they send that car careening out of control into a telephone pole.
I salute you, as well! Way to be a smartass!

Yeah officer, I was driving at 25mph when these bikers came out of nowhere causing me to swerve into the other lane and crash into a telephone pole.
What a great story! I forget that there are still major douche-heads even in B'ham.
