Thanks. I hadn't seen it yet. Talkback engaged.
There is also a thread over on Cascade about CM that has had some recent activity.

Got this from David "pit bull" Hiller and apparently it ran in the PI last week. Different way to look at who (whom?) is causing the real Critical Mass.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Eyewitnesses in downtown Seattle reported recently that during the evening
rush hour, traffic was snarled for blocks when a group of individuals chose
to use the streets in a manner that prevented commuters from moving.
Automobile drivers, almost all driving alone, simultaneously drove their
vehicles into the streets of downtown Seattle and instantly created
gridlock, impeding the progress of buses, cyclists and in some cases,
pedestrians.
Apparently fully understanding and anticipating the consequences of their actions, the automobile drivers nevertheless chose to act in a manner that made movement through downtown difficult.
One frustrated cyclist, choking on the fumes emitted by the automobiles
stationed around him, gasped, "I can go 25 or 30 miles per hour on this
street. I should have been home by now. Instead, I've moved one block in the past five minutes!" A bus rider noted: "All the people in all the cars on this street could fit in one bus!"
The immobilization of downtown Seattle streets by automobiles, although
executed without central coordination, was highly effective. Commuters are
cautioned to expect more such "critical mass" events, up to 20 times per
month.

man, does every single tiny-dicked repressed homosexual who drives a pickup truck and who fantasizes about being powerful lurk on the PI soundoff boards, or should there be a test to use the internet?

Hmpf. If only those wankers with the trucks on the comment boards had the capacity to think through the scenarios they describe. I imagine that some carnage would result when 100 U-lock wielding massers abruptly brought an end to Mr. Pickup's little Mad Max wet dream. I may not have a truck, but I have a hammer in my back pocket and a few hundred similarly armed friends. Next day's Headline: Motorist runs over, kills cyclist, then is pulled from vehicle and beaten to death by other riders.
That said, it'll never happen. Since most folks riding in and driving near CM are generally reasonable and peaceable folk, most occasions when something does start to escalate are quickly defused, as they should be.
There's a set of serious gross concept errors repeatedly echoed in that talkback.
1. It isn't a "right" to be able to drive the speed limit at all times. These people cry when a group of bicycles blocks them; where are they every morning when traffic becomes stop and go somewhere on I5, 520, 90 or 99? Threatening to demonstrate what the bumper on their Dodge Ram is for?
2. The concept that getting stuck behind bicycles somehow constitutes a crime like assault, unlawful imprisonment, aggravated manslaughter (?!), etc. Conversely, the idea that
- showing up to Westlake to intentionally hit cyclists
- swinging baseball bats in the crosswalks ("and if a biker just happens to be there...")
- driving at the speed limit even though there are bikers and pedestrians there because "it's my right"
doesn't show premeditation, means to cause grave bodily harm and the reasonable expectation of the same. As far as I'm concerned, that actually is assault by the letter of the law.
3. The idea that CM blocks emergency vehicles. Both times this was an issue, I saw the mass make a hole well before the ambulance got there. I even saw one case where a personal car equipped with a police siren and a girl in a soccer uniform in the passenger seat pulled out of the line of cars and turn his siren on. Even though it's clear there was no real emergency, we opened up a hole anyways.
I posted a link to a velonews article a bit ago. If you haven't read it yet, do. And please, someone invite Bob Minoske to come talk to SLB, cascade or .83.

I agree with the assertion that riding on 99 is retarded, because it is!

99 may be retarded, but Ted's greater point that motorists spend most of their evening commutes in their own critical mass is an excellent point. Ride a bike, ride the bus, or jeez - here's one: car pool!.
And stop bitching about the mere 12 days a year spent in traffic from our CM.

Add one of these stickers into the mix and you will be upgraded from getting tackled by transit cops to getting tackled by FBI.

According to my coworker it says
"There is only one God, the unique* God and Mohammad is his prophet."
*He struggled to translate this word and settled on unique...there probably could be a better translation. He's fluent (native speaker) so I'm guessing it's pretty accurate.

The script on the flag is written in the Thuluth script. It is the shahada or Islamic declaration of faith:
لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله
la ilaha ill allah muhammadun rasul allah
"There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his Messenger"
If only somebody knew how to insert 'bicycle' between his and Messenger. Strangelor, how's your cow-orker at writing?

That symbol is from the flag of the Islamic Khilafah. If the flag is black writing on a white background, it is the flag of the Islamic state, but if it is white writing on a black background it is the flag of Jihad, or war.
here's the original symbol I could find;
that looks a little cleaner, maybe your coworker could have an easier time with that, see what he says.
