apparently the You Dub does!

According to this article, the University is looking to go, uh, green by blowing 40 to 240 THOUSAND dollars on electric bikes!

"Forty bikes — which can be pedaled or ridden as electric scooters — will be spread across campus and available to be checked out. Each bike can go 25 miles on a charged battery, more if it's pedaled. And the bikes won't be restricted to campus...the UW will be the company's first launch...electric bike could cost from $1,000 to $6,000...This is an organic process...compared it to a bike-sharing system in Paris"

mmmmk, so its not green enough to just pedal around using good ole muscles and burn calories, but to spend a shitton of cash for electric bikes? Jezus...and all this time i thought electricity was a controlled commodity, and the UDub is SOOO like Paris.

I have a novel idea, spend half of that on twice as many regular ole bikes (and use the ones left on campus) and REALLY go green.

I know, i know..."at least they're doing something" or "i'm happy to see more bikes", but dang, people are still not going to ride them that much when the weather goes to shit, they're gonna get stolen and vandalized or just disappear. Why not just utilize regular bikes? They're cheaper to maintain and repair and for the money theyre gonna dump, they could have a huge fleet of similar bikes that it wouldnt be a big deal (or beneficial to a thief) when they go missing.

I mean really; do they think 40 electric bikes are REALLY gonna reduce that "last mile"? 400 bikes all around campus would definately meet their needs.

..but what the fuck do I know?

I can see electric being nice for some but in all honesty I dont think those motors can handle even some of the little hills around here unlike human power.

atleast its still getting some green with electric and not gas, and promoting less cars.

plus it just feels good to pedal your own bike and enjoy the actual ride

The article is light on the details and I'm left wondering what their theft prevention model is.

They could just have unique IDs and track the bike-ID checkout/check-in list. Hmm, Mr. Snyder checked a bike out and never checked it in, send the repo man after Mr. Snyder.

Or, being electric and all, they could do a lo/jack GPS + Cell phone data network sort of thing with them.

I'll be very curious to see what they end up with. Maybe I'll have to sign up for some more classes just to give it a try.

But, yeah Trev, WTF, isn't that what gears are for? Use gears, build muscles. The sla/nicad/lion batteries that will need replacing in a few years have some bad environmental impact.

seriously though, the best part is how their example use case was taking an electric bicycle from health sciences to u village. a distance of approximately a mile, entirely flat on the burke gilman trail.

What sux is that (from what I've heard scientists say) it turns out that "every little bit" doesn't help when it comes to global warming. It sounds more like we need some over-arching global effort to curb emissions by like 50%. So little pet projects that blow thousands of dollars on electric bikes seems way more like a PR stunt than anything else.

But hey, good for YOU.

$40 K for 40 bikes! that's a deal...

If they got bicycles instead they would only get about seven or eight decent bikes.... for $40k...
