This is an orienteering event, and I just noticed there will be a mountain bike course. Head on up to Kenmore the day after Life Day and get muddy.

Start times are usually at your whim between 10am and noon.

Yeah, sure, why not? Street Scrambles are urban bike orienteering (and urban foot, but ignore that part).

Presumably the mountain bike course can (and should) be done only on trails open to mountain bikes. I've never been, but it's my understanding there are a fair number of criss-crossing trails in the area open to bikes, so even if you just stay on the trails there's probably a question of the best way to get from one checkpoint to the other, and the potential for making the wrong turn.

And if there isn't, then it's just an alleycat on mud in the park, and it still sounds like fun. I haven't got a clue how to mountain bike, but maybe I'll try.

Further research reveals that past bike courses have been 6.6, 5.1 and 6.5 km long, with between 11 and 18 checkpoints. And apparently you can bike and run in a 'duathlon' category. I've got no idea how hard these bike courses are, although the winning times have ranged from 37 minutes to over an hour. Maybe someone who's actually done some timed mountain biking might have a clue.

You mean the Pugsley? Now I'm more tempted to show up, just to see this.

Weather: semi-ok.
Flat: fixed
Tires: Lee's donated 26x2.1 knobbies
Compass: check
Extra clothes and food: check

Now if only the wife would return and take over the kid-watching, then I'd be on my way.

Got back an hour ago. The rain held off and the weather was fine.

Despite the fact that we haven't had much rain, the course was muddy, and more technical than my beginner skills could handle (definitely harder than that race around Discovery Park). I got very dirty, but I never wiped out, probably thanks to the knobby tires (thanks, Lee!).

As for the orienteering, it wasn't too challenging; none of the controls were hidden behind trees, for instance, as they are wont to do for the running courses. The challenge was mostly in the mountain biking, and since I'm pretty mediocre in that, I got passed by a lot of folks.

So basically, it was a mountain bike race. I hope to see some more of you out there next year; it was pretty fun.
