Due to excessive amounts of negative feedback from the past Mass (riding the Viaduct), I know a handful of awesome riders (and CM patrons) who are extremely apprehensive about riding tonite. It truely saddens me that great bike enthusiasts are discouraged from attending one of the raddest communal events. As Seven once recommended, I think it could be awesome if P83 rallied to lead a sweet ride lapping around downtown...

HEAR, HEAR...I second that. Let us stay off the viaduct. And stay in downtown! And celebrate the bicycle life.

Does anyone know if we'll have a nice escort helicopter this time?
Loops around downtown seem like a wonderful idea.

At 6 let's do we do best, and start screaming "Let's ride bikes".
Up 4th, Down 5th, up 1st, down 2nd, up 3rd or 4th?
...and then down the SLUT route too?
I'll be there.

Mass on a road with tracks is a very bad idea.

I've never done Mass before. Where does it meet? When _exactly_ does it leave from where-ever?

Well, everyone meets at 5:30 at Westlake. I'm proposing just before 6 we start rallying.

Yes!
Looping downtown = good
Taking CM on tracks = bad
Viaduct = worse
And hey, I know a lot of you fuckers work at offices where they have stocks of construction paper and markers, so if anybody would like to create and distribute signs that say "Honk if you like bikes" or some such thing that we can use when corking it'd be pretty sweet.

;) Just curious about the tracks since it was mentioned earlier by other folks. I agree, tracks=bad, and I don't have any stickers yet.

I've been suggesting a downtown lapathon for a while now, but alas, i havent been able to make mass for the past few months.
honestly i think the theme of the night should be "go LEFT!"But per my keeper, i'm restricted and absolved from leading any cyclists anywhere...ever

haha this would work. We can loop and do all lefts. I jsut hope enough of us show up and get to the front to make the majority follow. We need to outnubmer the douches wanting to do 99.

1st, 2nd, and 5th beat 3rd and 4th.
3rd and 4th are both really busy bus corridors. I am in favor of attempting to keep mass transit corridors as open as possible. No sense inconveniencing bus commuters.
I think downtown is gonna get old quick. Even in the middle of shopping season there is not that much going on around here after 6 or 7. Ballard, Fremont, Wallingford, Capitol Hill, Lower QA and the UD are all far more interesting options than running loops around downtown.
CM is whatever people wish it to be. For me, it is about high-fiving pedestrians as I pass them. Smiling at people on the street. Riding with interesting people, increasing bicycle awareness, and generally having a good time. I agree that corking, riding more than 2 abreast etc. are illegal activities, and that CM has a pretty strong tradition of civil disobedience running through it. I also agree that part of civil disobedience is being disobedient. So I admit that when I engage in CM I violate some community standards of conduct, and also am in violation of multiple laws.
We all risk legal repercussions by participating in CM, but I find the approach of the SPD to be remarkably measured and restrained. Why stress that by being unnecessarily antagonistic and disruptive (not to mention BORING)? What do gain by staying in downtown all evening? What does a circuit through downtown really accomplish other than boring us all to tears, pissing off motorists more than is necessary, clogging up bus routes, and perhaps most importantly, making it really easy for SPD to interfere after they identify that we are sticking to a loop?
I don't think the SPD wants to bust CM (the challenges required to do such a thing are legally and logistically significant) but if they do, all the fucktards who post on the PI forums will pat themselves on the back, congratulate the SPD for a job well done, and smugly assert that we had it coming. Why give them the satisfaction? Why tempt such a thing when we all know that sticking to loop or two through downtown before breaking outta the core and going someplace more interesting will keep CM in the SPD's good graces and will accomplish (by my standards, admittedly) exactly what CM is supposed to accomplish?
Interacting with pedestrians is WAY more fun (more politically effective too, I think) than interacting with motorists. There are better places to go than downtown, really.

We need costumes and music... They're the best way to people's hearts. I'm definitely covering my bike in battery powered x-mas lights- I ride with flare!!

woah there cowboi...exactly how are they gonna bust CM?
theres not enough cops in this city to beat us ALL into submission...and we ARE on bikes (hard to catch), and for a decade we've been doing this...so i'd be interested as to their reasoning.
My suggestion (forwhat its worth here), do a few laps around the downtown core then maybe the gettodrome (looks pretty this time of year) then where ever out of the DT core.
...then to a boat party...

1) The same way the made a huge fucking mess of WTO, on a smaller scale.
2) I know there are not enough cops to do beat us ALL into submission. I like to think it helps us if we conduct ourselves civilly enough to keep from tempting them from beating even ONE of us into submission.
3) That sounds like fun to me. Shit, that sounds like a fucking ball. WAAAY better than looping downtown all evening.
Maybe my entire argument has more to do with attention span than anything else. Doing the same lap over and over again like a goldfish endlessly circling a tank sounds really fucking boring. I like to think we have better short term memories than goldfish and would get bored with the scenery after a couple loops.
Unless we are goldfish. This would explain my aimless wandering through Trader Joe's the other night for a full hour, only to walk away with nine items.

Okay kids. Don't go all crazy on this. It's not even possible to keep mass in downtown besides a few laps. No way we could keep it there all evening. We'd have to be effing thugs to keep a mass as large as Critical Mass somewhere that became boring.
While we are planning on leading this thing this evening we are not the only ones riding. Mass should be fun. It should be about interacting with pedestrians (and drivers!) I've had some grand interactions with drivers while corking. Chatting up about bikes and politics.
What we need to do here if we want to do some laps through downtown is use our VOICES. Talk to other massers! A lot of the fast kids that hang out up front should be identified before the ralley rolls and we should tell them our plans.
Two or three, maybe even four (if we're really lucky) laps through downtown, then let's roll somewhere fun.
And can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE not have a bitchfest in this here thread after mass? Let's just have fun this month, kids.
