dang. that's some grim gossip.
To their credit, Fleetfoot is one of the best paying companies and hires some of the fastest guys I've ever met. Craig works for them. (here's hoping I don't get a Ulock in the neck next time I'm downtown)

I've done S&R up at Snow Lake many, many times. The switchbacks up the last bit are crazy steep and cut right into the granite, people fall off all the time. In the winter, there are 2-3 snowshoers that get lost or swept off the bluff every year. Snow Lake is technically underrated as a hike with maybe the easiest access in the area, it's a matter of averages.

I hate to victim-blame, but don't people check weather forecasts? I read that the Snow Lake hikers set out on Friday and planned on coming back Sunday. Meanwhile even NPR was going all Jim Forman-like on reporting the incoming storm. Fuck.

wow..damn, that is rotten news. Suck ass way to go, IMO, avalanches are fucking scary!
Devils advocate here; Not all outdoorsfolk listen to the proper news weather source. Not all news weather sources collaborate on their forecast. Could be they listened to the "good" weather report as opposed to the "correct" weather report.
Too bad really some reports I heard didnt anticipate this storm till later Saturday, when good sources saw the potential of the two merging typhoons getting sucked into the jet stream and fired like a wet ICBM into the northwest.
Devils advocate out.
I'm just sayin, it sucks the paid for it...it really sucks...God rest 'em.

Shitty way to start off the season. I was so stoked about the huge amount of snowfall and now I just feel kinda bummed.
I'm for sure going to do an avalanche course this season... they just always seem to schedule them when I'm already teaching lessons.
I haven't started riding yet this season because my ankles still healin, but my friends went up to Baker on saturday and said it was pretty epic.
Hopefully this will change some peoples minds about hitting the back country when it's that sketchy out. I for one will take back country pow any day over sex, but I hope I'll be cautious, and have enough self control to not get myself killed once I'm healed up.

IMO
boarding or plankin or shooin in the backcou without Avalanche training is like riding a crotch rocket without taking motorcycle classes.
just cause you can, does not mean you should...and you'll be bumming when that lack of knowledge comes a'knockin.
I feel terrible for their family. Loss.

No shit. Avy beacons are going to be the new fixed gear. Anyone who checked the mountain or avy forecast knew this was not the weekend to hit the backcountry. This pit test speaks volumes. Hit the groomers and wait for that shit to settle. It's a long winter and spring with plenty of opportunities ahead. It really pisses me off when I hear sad stories like this - whether a hike up to Snow Lake or scoping fresheez at Crystal - that could have been prevented with a healthy dose of education and respect for the mountains.

I would expand this statement to include pretty much all outdoor activities that require you to fend for yourself when shit gets dicey and nature has other plans.
For all the serenity that nature can offer, she can turn into a raging bitch in practically no time. There have been a few times when I had pretty strong reminders of my own mortality and of nature's ability to kick my ass. I have been grateful each and every time for having gone to the trouble to equip myself for survival and learn a few tricks to stay alive out there.
I wonder if any of them checked in with the north west avalanch centers web site. when they say conditions are real fucken bad you don't go. alpental area has killed more than one. A friend of mine lost her brother 10 years ago in a slide. be prepared
