It's cold out there kiddies. I think one of my ears fell off by the Fred Myer in Ballard, and I'm not sure where the other one is, but if you see a hobo smoking crack out of it in Fremont, get it back for me.

But I digress.

Let's ride bikes!

no way man, I can't stand any of your fuckers and I never ride bikes or drink whiskey, or or or...

okay, actually I have to stay in with Vera and replace her brake cables & housing so I can stop in time not to run over folks who crash on the SLUT tracks on Wednesday.

but uh, I still ride bikes. you know, some times, when mine are in working order and my bus pass is expired.

We've not done a ride to Hale's in Ballard/Fremont (that I've been on), and I have it from an inside source that they get their pretzel shipment in on Tuesday, so they're the fresh on Tuesday night.

Out to Fremont Peak Park for pre-boozing and then on to Hales for beer and pretzels?

Not a long ride, I just want to get out and ride tonight as it's been three weeks or something since I've been out.

I demand a ride to the Christmas Ships in Blue Ridge. On the way in or out, we can look at the pretty lights in Olympic Manor. From there, we can retire to Hales or any other NW or N bar.

By the way, the burn ban has been lifted, so there should be a bonfire. Provided by rich people on their private beach for you to enjoy.

How can you say no?

Maybe we should ride at least long enough me to be able to clip in.

Yeah, if you show up we should do that.

Not that I'm guaranteeing my own presence or anything.

I'm showing up. Unless I get waylaid at a certain office holiday party.

Burn ban? Nobody seemed to mind on Sunday out at Carkeek. Oops.

Random people ignore the burn ban with semi-impunity (or just don't even know it exists). But this bonfire won't be built by random people, but by the Blue Ridge Mucky-Muck Community Beach Club Association Inc. A few years back, I went to another Xmas ship event (at Matthews Beach, I believe) where they canceled the bonfire due to a burn ban.

the problem with hale's is that it's a really shitty place to hang out. the dive bar across the street beats the pants off of it.

also, it closes at 10pm. this will give you another clue as to the clientele.

but yeah, either way, dress appropriate

Dude, warn of the NSFW links!

Anyway, I've only hung out at Hales with one or two other people, never a big group. So the wisdom of those who have is something I will abide by...

Bonfires and Christmas lights sound awesome. I need to go home, get a warmer jacket, bourbon, and my microfiber balaclava after work before heading over.

Just stepped outside. Still cold!

Speaking of getting one's bourbon, I don't know if we'll have time to stop for supplies on the way (given how long people tend to take...), so buy supplies beforehand, and put them in a discrete flask or something similar if you've got one.

Also, I don't think we can take our bikes down to the beach, so if you're got a lock, bring it and we'll make a pile or two. Blue Ridge is not a high-crime area, so a few cable locks (I've got one) will probably do the job.

Finally, does someone want to tell me exactly where the big sinkhole is on Golden Gardens Drive? Does this route avoid it: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1494380

No, it's right above the dog park. You can't leave the park to the NE without going around the hole.

You should be working and not looking at the internet.

I guess this means I get to ride my geared bike, because getting back out of blue ridge is a bitch.

I wasn't going to ride up Golden Gardens. I was evaluating the different ways out of Blue Ridge. If we could go down GG, it would save us climbing a little bit of Loyal Heights, but going around a sinkhole may not be worth the savings. The climb out of Blue Ridge is semi-ridiculous no matter which way you go, assuming you're not on a train or a kayak.

To get there, I plan on going through Olympic Manor via the north side of Green Lake.

The sinkhole is passable but very sketchy. The little 5' wide strip of roadway that's left has no earth underneath it, no telling when it might collapse. I went out to gawk on Saturday and there was a cop stationed at View Ave and GG Dr. He was pissed that people were walking past the tape and barricades to gawk, he actually growled at me. "It's not an area open for public viewing! GRRRRRRRRR!!!! (fists clenched at his sides, foot stomping the ground, eyes rolling to the sky)" It made my day.

hey if you folks get a chance, would you explore the road through north beach park? supposedly you can cut through that ravine from NW 95th up to 24th Ave NW. i sadly won't be out there tonight, which sucks because blue ridge is one of those neighborhoods i've never really been in and seems like it might have some interestingness.

Not as we rode it it wasn't.

Lee, I won't take a hypothetical trail in the dark on bikes, but it looks like there should be a trail starting at the south end of 26th Pl NW (off 95th) winding up to the western end of NW 90th (off 24th). I'll see if I can find the endpoints.

If you're wondering why I won't take this trail in the dark, I'll direct you to the Mary Ave NW entrance to Carkeek Park, and you can bike down that trail for a passably pleasant gradual half mile or so downhill, at which point you will be lulled into a sense of complacency so you can eat shit on a sudden steep 10 foot descent.

Geez, that one's even on the Carkeek trails map. But most of those trails are supposed to be closed to bicycles.

I didn't bother looking at the north end, but there is indeed a trail down North Beach Ravine that starts at the SW corner of NW 90th and 24th NW. It goes down, 90th parallels it going up.

For those who missed it, the marshmallows having a snowball fight are at NW 92nd St. and 21st Ave NW.

Candy Cane Lane is an okay spot to walk around and look at lights, but Olympic Manor is a much better bet on a bike.

False! I called! To confim/deny/apologize.

They are not disgruntled at me or any other bike riding drunk.
