The City of Bellevue is currently working on a project to encourage and promote bicycling in downtown Bellevue, and would like to have the involvement of some cyclists in the Bellevue Area.
The City of Bellevue is hosting a meeting on Monday December 17th at 4:00pm and would greatly appreciate it if one or two bike commuters could attend to help them understand the needs of urban cyclists in Bellevue.
If you are interested please reply to isaaca@sudevelopment.com as soon as possible so they can prepare for the meeting and send out the meeting details and agenda.

Shared bikes in bellevue seems like a recipe for a bunch of dead high school kids.

I wish they were including the rest of Bellevue in this, there would be more cyclists in downtown if they could get there better via I-90.
Henry, what's the best way?

There is no great way that i know of.
The two ways that come to mind are:
Bellevue Way- fuckton of traffic, angry bellevue drivers. But this is the flattest and most direct. I don't really mind it in a group, but i'll avoid it by myself.
108th- this way is pretty direct too but you go over two non-trivial hills, there other routes you could take staying west of Bellevue way, but those are all hilly
If you're coming from the east 116th makes sense, but you'll still have to climb in to downtown proper.
Bellevue is not a fun place to ride a bike. At all.

The roads through bellevue are actually pretty damn good. The issue is more the cell-phone-talking-mercedes-suv-driving-idiots that are the problem.
Best way from 90 is to wrap underneadth 90, then across that bridge to the slough, then over that crappy cement path to 114th or whatever its called.

It depends on where in Bellevue you want to go, I guess. I work near Bellevue Square. After I get across the bridge, I ride up 110th to 28th, make left on 28th to 108th, then I ride 108th to Bellevue Way. I then take bellevue way, because 108th north of bellevue way is extremely stupid for bikes.
Being a cyclist in bellevue, up to this point, has been better than being a pedestrian. Waiting for the lights and crossing a bajillion lanes of traffic is absurd.
but like martin says, 118th to the concrete path ain't shabby if you're trying to get to the 'heart' of Bellevue.

That said, I'm probably going to go to this. I'm multi-modal and take 520, so I would totally appreciate some thought about the evergreen and yarrow point routes.

wouldn't one go through Medina on that major arterial (8th?) and then take the right that takes you over to 520, just like the bus does? I don't know street names for this route and I'm too lazy to gmap it, but I can picture it.

8th (and what it becomes) has non-trivial hills as well- i'd just head down main and follow it along lake washington blvd- this will get you to the same place avoiding a hill.
also, i distinctly remember last summer when henry, lee and i went to bellevue for burritos, and we only saw one other cyclist. we were surprised to see even that one, before realizing it was rlotz.

It would be great if this little group could do a better job of installing signs on the roads to remind cars to watch out for bikers- people in Bellevue are too worried about getting to Nordstroms more quickly than driving properly. On thursday Dec 6 at 4 pm my 15 year old sister was riding to school on Bellevue Way when she was struck just as she about cleared an exit leading out of the mall. She was riding on the sidewalk because Bellevue Way was so busy and had stopped at the exit and checked for cars, seeing none she rode through and had just cleared it when a car rolled out of the exit without stopping to turn right and ran over her back tire flipping her over the front of the bike. Her bike was totalled and she had to walk home where my mom took her to the hospital where she was treated for a concussion. The guy who hit her stopped, rolled down her window and said "are you all right?" and then took off while she was still on the ground. No one reported the incident to the police even though it happened in rush hour at one of the busiest intersections in Belleue. I don't foresee Bellevue becoming a mecca for bikers anytime soon.

the only way to vaguely enjoy HELLvue on a bike is either @ 3 am or after the apocalypse. Same thing goes for Kirkland, Medina and Redmond (to an extent)...pretty much most of the Eastside can go fuck it's self.

My first thought about how to improve cycling in Bellevue?
Drop about 3.5 million tons of munitions on the city until it's a razed hole in the ground, then pave some nice bike paths through the rubble.
All that said, I ride in Bellevue a bit, and it's really not bad in comparison to other places I've been.
