make sure to turn volume up.
That looks great.. people are on their toes aware... traffic is moving...
I would say in that system... every driver is aware that theey are driving or surrounded by 3000lb objects moving at 30-100 feet per second. Contrast that with 2nd ave where no one has any idea of the dangers inherrent in city driving and they just all sit frustrated bumper to bumper.
increase in potential injury does not actually increase actual injury.
To me it seems that you have a lot more aware drivers and pedestrians in that situation and awareness is where safety is at. In the US almost all accident reports include "I didn't see..." xor "I didn't realize they were there".
Which is why Trevor needs a real bike... but I digress...

1. it is utterly fucking annoying.
2. it is a system that rewards the rudest, most selfish people out there.
3. it takes forever to get anywhere.
4. it is not safer, as a matter of fact it is much more dangerous. look at statistics.
5. it impedes any continuous effort to make road conditions and surfaces better.
6. it is the loudest shit ever. i have a headache in china 24/7 because of it.
7. it was indeed india, not china, but china is exactly the same.
8. it is fruitless to continue this conversation.

oh really? lets walk down that path for a moment...
that guy was hit full on by a sun blinded driver...escaped with bruises and a bloody nose!!! could you claim the same in an upright? Medics on the scene theorize that the frame design acted like a cage and protected the rider. I have similar stories from other trikers.
but if I was afraid of death, i'd just stay home.

Fruitloops to you maybe, I actually find it interesting.
To me it looks like a somewhat more crowded and more frenetic version of places in the middle east... which are pretty horrifying at first, but much more efficient when you get into the swing of it.
I would like to see the statistics of injuries per capita and per passenger mile. Then there is helmet use, health care, etc. that need to get factored in. But I would be interested in seeing the statistics if you would be so kind as to provide a link.
I see your point, I hear what you are saying... and I don't know how a free for all would work here with our populace. All your points may be very true... although I suspect your headache comes from lack of emissions regulations, one of the conditions that allows for lower manufacturing costs.
(And Trevor I was just kidding... it's not for safety reasons i want you to get a real bike... interesting pic though.)

you drink in public, ride CM, and i'm sure theres a plethora of others I know nothing about. no offense, cause i consider you a brother in arms (amongst other things), but it's silly to use that " 'cause it's the law" if you don't follow every single rule to the letter.
ya follow?
Thank you .83 (and CM) for being my method of rebellion against the government's bizarre traffic laws and the automobile. I am particularly concerned about obeying traffic laws (when I ride alone) since transportation planning/engineering/modeling is going to be my future career. And about the drinking, you may have noticed I have recently been trying to cut down on the drinking in public.
Other than those two things I am otherwise extremely dangerous to society.

running a stop sign or red light on a bicycle is like going 5mph over the speed limit in a car. it's illegal (failure to obey traffic control device) but if done appropriately essentially harmless. the main difference is that when speeding is done incorrectly you're likely to kill people beyond just your own dumb self.
i did like the lady on thursday that held up traffic in the left turn lane so she could speed past me when my lane turned green. classy!
honestly, i don't give a fuck how stupidly you people ride. or walk for that matter. but don't drive like morons when you're in a car!

china: 680 road deaths a day
us: 580 road deaths a day (adjusted for equal number of cars as china (real number is 115))
this doesn't include the fact that us cars drive many many more miles a day.
so assuming the fact that us cars drive 3 times more a day:
680 vs. 194
not to mention the china stats are grossly inaccurate and are assumed to by much much higher.
this conversation is over.

dude, chill... you don't have to be so adversarial... they're interesting statistics and well worth consideration (as much as census stats are worth considering). Doesn't really talk much about bikes... or a lesser lack of will to live on the operating table due to poor quality of life conditions in the factories.... but they are interesting stats nonetheless that I had not seen... bad stats when known to be bad can still have a value for rough consideration...

Some of our laws and designs are really bad. Particularly when the specific traffic control and roadway design are mis-applied.
We have arterials designed with as 55 mph highways, place 30mph speed limit signs on them, and are surprised when people exceed the speed limit.
We have stoplights and stop signs designed as traffic calming devices for cars that are inappropriate for bicycles due to visibility differences.

wait wait wait, how many of those increased road deaths are from bicycles running stop signs? yes cars should fucking stop for stop signs. it's a CAR.

I can't speak to statistics, having never looked them up but when I was riding around China on those shitty, shitty rental flying pigeon bikes with components falling off as I rode (In Dali, the handlebars came off in my hands as I was making a left in front of a bus), I still felt safer that I ever have riding around here.
In fact, riding in traffic in China is what originally got me off of the trails back at home and riding in traffic.
Yeah, developing nation traffic is pretty retarded but the fact is that if you look at worldwide development statistics, the world is rapidly headed towards population growth occurring primarily in slums akin to what you see outside, say Mexico City and traffic like India's. So good or bad... get used to it, US style traffic is becoming an anomaly.
